its probably a hoax, its really disgusting how some people take an opportunity such as the high fear level in the u.k right now and use it to play games and have fun with the police to gain a gleeful joy that they have achieved a shopping centre/train station or city area evacuation. Really makes me and thinking about the terrorists and other people who get joy out of hurting/scaring

I used to work on Broad Street and was subject to many an evacuation but nothing on this scale. As someone has said it wouldn't have been done lightly. The money lost will be huge, where I worked we would have had to refund every patrons money.

I hope its all a false alarm but better safe than sorry.

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:00

i imagine the problem is that there's a few pub/club hotspots in brum as they say Chinatown isnt that close to broad street but both are very "in" and packed

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:04

just listened to the news on Heart FM and they say that an explosive has been found in a hotel on broad street and bomb disposal are at the scene as well as police with machine guns and body armour

JulieF · 10/07/2005 01:06

Have they said which hotel?

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:08

no they havent. Cant rememeber which ones are there apart from Copthorne, Hyatt and Novotel

JulieF · 10/07/2005 01:10

Depends which part of Broad Street, those are the 2 main ones, think the Swallow is further up then there are the smaller ones past fiveways but is that still Broad Street?

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:11

isnt that Hagley road?

JulieF · 10/07/2005 01:12

think it is yes, I worked there for 8 years and still don;t know road names!!!

HappyHuggy · 10/07/2005 01:15

i think the hotel began with a C

JulieF · 10/07/2005 01:17

chamberlain or copthorne then perhaps

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:20

i think someone set a firework off earlier and I nearly crapped myself but then remembered I am about 8-10 miles away

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 10/07/2005 01:22

so are the explosives confirmed? not watching tv, and cant see anything online

jampots · 10/07/2005 01:23

controlled explosion on bus (not a device) and apparently explosive found at hotel in city centre

HappyHuggy · 10/07/2005 01:43

sister is home and safe

jampots · 10/07/2005 09:46

just listened to a little bit on Heart FM - no explosions in Brum and the city centre is now re-opened

But they did say that hte Chief of Police is coming under some stick for "over-reacting" - WTF! I completely agree with him in that 20,000 people got home safely and without injury! How can that compare to having a few drinks?

nutcracker · 10/07/2005 09:48

I knew that would happen Jampot. I'd much rather somene possibly over react than have had them today clearing up bodies.

Hulababy · 10/07/2005 09:52

News is very patchy this morning.

City centre is now reopen, from just before 6am I think.

Packages found and blown up, but not related to incident apparantly. Four conrtrolled explosions were on a bus:

"Four suspect packages were blown up but Mr Scott Lee said they had nothing to do with the intelligence warnings. "

The hotel package was at a Travel Lodge:

"At 0500 BST on Sunday bomb disposal experts declared that a suspect package at the Travelodge hotel on Broad Street was not a "credible device". "

"The device, a box with wires hanging out and a switch on top, was later found to be harmless."

They are still saying it was probably not related to the London events.

BattyBox · 10/07/2005 13:28

it seems to me that you folk who live in brum are fortunate to have such a great police force.

hope you all feel abit more relaxed this mornning!!

noddyholder · 10/07/2005 13:50

Hs anyone heard anything about a suspect package at heathrow We just went to collect our language student and his coach was delayed and they rang saying heathrow terminal 1 was affected

HappyDaddy · 10/07/2005 19:48

I think that, to be fair, everywhere will be reporting suspect packages for a few weeks yet.

jambo1707 · 10/07/2005 20:44

Have I read this right there was another suspect package at heathrow?? and birmingham is now ok is that right??

janeite · 10/07/2005 21:21

Birmingham now fine. I was there last night and it was really freaky and surreal but like someone said earlier, the only really scary moment was when we wered irected by police to HURRY up a road as fast as poss. It was a nightmare getting a taxi to get home but think we were some of the lucky ones who actually succeeded and didn't have to walk miles.
