Do you think they'll have to improve the tube? I really, really hope so!!!!

MrsDoolittle · 06/07/2005 15:37

Can't believe how chuffed I am
We can win something!!!

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 15:38

Do you really think this is going to make a blind bit of difference to sport in schools? There will still be poor sporting facilities in my part of South London - bet there won't be any state of the art infrastructure improvements here.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 15:39

And pmsl at the phrase "we won the olympics".

teeavee · 06/07/2005 15:44

b*y hell - just been told that this is going to cost £5 billion - for 3 weeks of muscle-tweaking?!!!!!

makes that awful dome seem like money well spent

MrsDoolittle · 06/07/2005 15:46

And how long did we think we were going to hold off the cynicism??????
Errr?

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 15:47

What's wrong with the phrase "we won the olympics" ? [thick uneducated emoticon]

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 15:49

Congrats on your pregnancy Mrs D!

I saw you being quite feisty on another thread earlier this week btw. Took my breath away

teeavee · 06/07/2005 15:49

sorry - but I too have an almost total aversion to sport - I only ever watch the rugby during the 6 nations, and snooker/darts when I visit my gran.

emmatmg · 06/07/2005 15:50

Soupy, i'm in the same-ish area as you and I think it will make a massove difference to our schools.

I understand everyone concerns over the amount of money this will cost but I'm shocked that people don't see this a fantasic and an amazing experience/opportunity for our children.

I doubt it will ever happen again (in this counrty) in our life times and possibly even theirs.

I'll be first in the queue to do whatever I have to do for my Ds's to be in the opening ceremony.....I mean, come on.....what an experience having the entire world competeing in their own country.

Don't you agree?

hunkermunker · 06/07/2005 15:53

Is it just Londoners who will be paying for it? DH said the argument for that is we will use the facilities afterwards, but surely we'll be charged to use them (if we do!).

Mind you, he said it's about £20 per family per year - I'm not grudging them that! Am very pleased we've got it!

Lonelymum · 06/07/2005 15:56

Oh dear.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 15:56

"we won the olympics" makes me laugh because it sounds like we're top of the medal table at the end of an olympics (and we all know how likely that is)

And I still don't think it will make a blind bit of difference to this area. We won't get any fab new sporting venues or even a decent swimming pool. Our local pools are discraceful and central Croydon doesn't even have one.

MrsDoolittle · 06/07/2005 15:56

Me? feisty HMC? where was that?

Ladymuck · 06/07/2005 15:56

hmc - errr, because the races etc haven't started yet! But I know what you mean! It does seem a bit odd to be celebrating wininning the right to host a competition.

Doubtless there will be loads of media coverage on the costs/benefits of the games over the next few days.

Personally I would have been happy enough to Paris. It is close enough that I would have definitely travelled over, and I would have happily missed all the coverage of "will we be ready?" etc. Stunned to hear that people living in the Midlands wouldn't consider coming to London for the Games. Thankfully there will be plenty of tourists to take their places.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 15:57

Will the Olympics in 2012 provide new sports equipment and facilities for our schools?

milward · 06/07/2005 15:57

If so much money comes in from the olympics - would have been good to have had the event in a poor country to increase the economy there.

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 15:58

Oh, I thought that maybe you meant it was a grammatically incorrect phrase! - doh!

Ladymuck · 06/07/2005 15:59

Milward - the problem is whether they could have managed to build the infrastructure etc in time. There is always a push for an African country to host the Olympics/World Cup etc, but it seems to be the project management side that holds them back.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 15:59

Oh, goodness no. I very rarely comment on someone's grammar.

Mum2girls · 06/07/2005 15:59

To use the Kangameister's phrase it is deffo brill. Am chuffed.

I'm in the Midlands and Cov is building a brand new stadium as we speak - some events are bound to be held there.

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 15:59

Mrs D - ah, you know the one!

(don't want to dredge it up)

but you did sound very spirited

milward · 06/07/2005 16:00

Travel from midlands to London - train late, expensive (especially if taking whole family) & over crowded. Car - roads full of jams when get near London. Suppose when there are huge numbers of extra people in London for the event will be even better to travel....

handlemecarefully · 06/07/2005 16:00

Well I didn't think it was your style Soupdragon

SoupDragon · 06/07/2005 16:01

It's not often the UK will get the opportunity to use the phrase "we won the Olympics"
