Proposed march through Wooton Bassett

Here

Initially saw this on the BBC but this link gives a bit more detail. I support everyone's right to free speech but ... dear goodness, this seems to be exceptionally bad taste. My DH is an army doctor and, during his time in a free Afgan clinic for civilians run by the army, saved many Afgan lives. He's going out there again in January. I can imagine I'd be incredibly distressed if he'd lost his life in the conflict and somebody wrote to me explaining what he'd 'really' died for. Ugh. Maybe it's just my personal bias, but I can't help feel that the proposed march is sited to cause maximum potential for violent conflict and to cause maximum hurt to those who are bereaved.

Well, I wouldn't, but if it's more to your taste...

TheFallenMadonna · 04/01/2010 14:20

Oooh - I think I misread you. I don;t mean I would rather live under Sharia Law

Just not in France

BadgersPaws · 04/01/2010 14:22

"I dare say the early labour movement was viewed as dangerously bolshy and its supporters invited to move somewhere more 'to their taste'."

Exactly my point!

atlantis · 04/01/2010 14:23

"Just not in France "

Oh good something we can agree on. France sucks.

atlantis · 04/01/2010 14:24

""I dare say the early labour movement was viewed as dangerously bolshy and its supporters invited to move somewhere more 'to their taste'."

If only they had. please don't tease me I am a conservative after all.

morine · 04/01/2010 14:25

I have been living in France many years ago, and I still have relatives there. France has declared itself a laique (laic) state and I can tell you that there is much less race and religious tension.

The majority of Muslim women in France don't cover themselves, and Muslims there marry anybody, they are not like Muslims here.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/01/2010 14:26

Sorry morine - I was only joking about France...

BadgersPaws · 04/01/2010 14:27

"Surely the point is they dont want to change just a few policy decisions, they want to change our whole way of life."

Socialism, worker's rights in general and women's rights in particular changed this country's whole way of life through the last century.

I doubt few here would argue that that shouldn't have happened.

So a complete change of society isn't necessarily a bad thing, providing society supports it, and I hope that it never supports what Islam4Uk want it to.

morine · 04/01/2010 14:27

you sweety !!

ronshar · 04/01/2010 14:29

To be honest most of the problems we have in this world would be sorted out alot quicker and painlessly if a more simplistic approach was taken.

Islam4uk, take your march somewhere less emotive. Like outside Parliament. Where you want your point to be listened to!
Why doesnt someone say that to them rather than messing around and asking them politely to think about it!

Is it wrong to suggest to those who want to live in a completly different society, which does exist elsewhere, to go there and live!

Also without being rude I think that the issue with the radical Islamic extremist is just ever so slightly different to the womens movement or the labour movement. Both of which were about removing major injustice in our society.
I hardly think they compare do you?

atlantis · 04/01/2010 14:29

"Sorry morine - I was only joking about France..."

I wasn't, can not stand France (sorry) but I meant no offence to you Morine.

morine · 04/01/2010 14:32

It would be very hard now to change things here in the UK, for example the mask wearing. In FRance muslims women don't wear a mask.

onagar · 04/01/2010 14:33

They claim the right under our rules of free speech to demand an end to free speech. They represent an international group which makes them different from citizens promoting change.

The BNP, despite what we might think of them do live here. If the BNP leadership consisted of Ku Klux Klan members in another country we'd have banned them by now. And rightly so because trying to force changes in a society from outside is war not natural development/growth

You have to put up with what your family and neighbours say and do (regardless of what color they are) even if it's shit, because they live here too. You don't have to put up with it from outside.

morine · 04/01/2010 14:34

It's ok atlantis, there are good and bad side everywhere, your still a sweety

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 14:35

People are saying that ronshar...and if they ignore them and go ahead, there will be protests....

I'll be there...

ronshar · 04/01/2010 14:35

Are you arguing that you support their right to march or support what they are marching for??

I am arguing that as far as I am aware only a very tiny tiny minority of people in this country want to live under an Islamic state.
With that assumption I would think that it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect most people to agree that if you dont like living in this country, as we all do as it is now, then find an Islamic state to live in for yourselves!

I would also never vote for the BNP but I do have an understanding as to the reasons why people do. Say thank you to the Labour party for that!

atlantis · 04/01/2010 14:36

"It would be very hard now to change things here in the UK, for example the mask wearing. In FRance muslims women don't wear a mask."

which brings us back to westernisation, we maybe a multiultural society but we are not an intergrated society.

morine · 04/01/2010 14:42

What is the difference between multiculturalism and integration, according to you atlantis ?

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 14:43

I fully support the freedom of speech and the democratic right to march and have your say...however, they can do that outside parliament..not in Wootton Bassett...that would be just too distasteful...but that's why the bastards are doing it..

morine · 04/01/2010 14:50

To be honest, now I don't know whom to blame ? The extremists or those who allow them to carry this march ?

scarletlilybug · 04/01/2010 14:51

The problam with multi-culturalism is that, whilst it was conceived as a tolerant ideal to encourage mutual understanding, it has actually ended up emphasising difference and encouraging segregation.

noddyholder · 04/01/2010 14:51

They aren't going to march and probably never intended to but all teh daily mail readers are up in arms so job done

scarletlilybug · 04/01/2010 14:56

"They aren't going to march and probably never intended to but all the daily mail readers are up in arms so job done"

Job done for whom? Nick Griffin, I would say. Bet he couldn't believe his luck.

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 14:58

I think you're right nh...all talk, but they have got themselves publicity and the BNP 1000s more votes...so all good I guess..

1000 muslims V 1000 BNP supporters...

don't think anyone will let it go ahead..

or maybe they will...?
