I'd like to think DP was listening to my questions for a while. And maybe thinking a bit beyond her normal range of thoughts. I despise the things she is saying too. But I think the aggressive response to her, as with the aggressive response to Griffin tonight, will only entrench her/his position.

When I was 20, I would have agreed entirely with the hot-headed no platform policy. And probably joined in a peaceful protest. Now I'm more than twice as old, I'm less sure. For a start there WILL - you can guarantee - be trouble makers of all hues planted in the crowd. Anarchist nutters in black balaclavas will mix with nazis dressed like liberals...

If someone knows why they believe what they believe, there's probably no hope of changing their mind. If they have some questions and doubt however, then their mind is open to change. DP shows some signs of being interested in tolerance, when not goaded.

There are many, many more people around the country who feel like her. Electra said much earlier on she couldn't understand why someone wouldn't want to live in a multicultural society. That is precisely the problem. Understanding that, and responding appropriately to change it, is gonna be the only way we deal with this nonsense.

Katiekitty · 22/10/2009 20:15

DP - tell us what your favourite music is?

poshsinglemum · 22/10/2009 20:17

I think some people see being British as fish and chips, tiffin (from India incidently), winston Churchhill, the English language (now a global language), bull dogs and the Union Jack. All very last century and influened by Britains global dominance. Which has of course been influenced by yes- you guessed it- multiculturalism.

Peopel who bang on about Britain being such a small island with no room for outsiders have failed to recognised that Britains have been escaping from this small island for centuries and travelled the rest of the world. I would hate to live in an isolationist culture- how claustrophobic.

poshsinglemum · 22/10/2009 20:19

I don't think that disagreeing strongly with someone or finding them offensive is aggressive at all.

DP clearly finds multiculturalism offensive.

Ewe · 22/10/2009 20:21

He is allegedly (according to twitter) looking very uncomfortable and getting a very hard time from the crowd, lots of boos etc.

monkeysmama · 22/10/2009 20:21

I don't usually post on these forums keeping my MNing confined to comments on the Style & Beauty pages but....

I am proud to say that I've just got in from the protest against Nick Griffin appearing on Question Time.

What lots of people are missing is that the BNP are not a normal political party and Nick Griffin has spent years consciously hiding their agenda. He is not about to start goosestepping or Heil Hitlering on Question Time. Let me quote from Griffin himself "There's a difference between selling out your ideas and selling your ideas. The BNP is not about selling out its ideas - which are your ideas too - but we are determined now to sell them. And that means, bascially, to use the saleable words: freedom, security, identity, demoncracy" - and do you know who he was talking to and with when he said that - the Klu Klux Klan - that bastion of demoncracy.

"Instead of presenting the party as a revolutionary alternative to the system, we must present them (the electorate) with an image of moderate reasonableness.... Of course we must teach the truth to the hardcore. But when it come to influencing the public, forget about racial differences, Zionism, histroical revisionsim and so on".

And oh what a proud history of taking on the BNP the BBC has! Just a few weeks ago two "young BNP members" Mark and Joey were interviewed on BBC kids TV unchallenged even when they suggested Ashley Cole is not "ethnically English". Do you know who Mark & Joey were? The BNP Press Manager and Youth Membership Manager. Appearing unchallenged.

The reality is this - when the BNP are active in an area, get publicity or elected, racist attacks go up. That isn't a wishy washy debate about freedom of speech - it is a horrific reality. I believe in freedom of speech - I believe in the freedom of speech of all the non white people in our communities who are not allowed to join the BNP and would be "repatriated" by them.

I am proud I was there today.

India Knight is tweeting to find people in the audience to follow, if you're on Twitter...

Ewe · 22/10/2009 20:27

They work for rags but James Lyons and David Wooding are tweeting live from the Question Time.

Mamazonabroomstick · 22/10/2009 20:28

secondcoming - for a moment then i missed the fact you were quoting DP.

i hadn't read the full thread properly and if that is what has been spouted im glad.

IM sorry but posters have been banned for similar posts and quite rightly so.

southeastastra · 22/10/2009 20:29

this is where twitter is so informative isn't it ewe

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 22/10/2009 20:30

Yeah I've got them Ewe - thanks. They're reporting that NG is rattled in the studio and being widely mocked. Straw doing well apparently...

Ewe · 22/10/2009 20:30

"#nickgriffin #bnp says he finds 2 men kissing in public creepy"

I find his views on homosexuality almost as repulsive as his views on immigration and race. I really hope he is utterly annihilated by other panel members and the audience.

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 20:31

tsc;

yes...i do struggle with alot of things....esp to do with being a catholic....

but that doesn't make me a fucking disgrace...that makes me human.

monkeysmama · 22/10/2009 20:31

I missed that too secondcoming and was feeling a bit glum about how many nasty people on MN there were. Feel better now.

hazeyjane · 22/10/2009 20:32

Good post Monkeysmama.

I am glad to see people protesting out there.
One of the things that scares me about the BNP is how they have re-branded themselves.

poshsinglemum · 22/10/2009 20:32

There is a difference between politicians not giving expenses money to Africa and instead spending them on your garden or whatever, to openly saying you want people shot.

I spend most of my money on dd and me and don't give to charity but it dosn't mean I am racially intollerant.

Tortington · 22/10/2009 20:32

dp why do you equate british with being white?

can one not be british and black ?

Mamazonabroomstick · 22/10/2009 20:33

do you know what i fear most about this? the fact that other politicians are suddenly going to appear reasonable!

Ewe · 22/10/2009 20:33

You're right sea, this is where twitter comes into it's own, things like this type of real time information. The Carter Ruck stuff the other week... It's quite amazing!

poshsinglemum · 22/10/2009 20:33

Sorry- I got my wires crossed about the shot statement!

Tortington · 22/10/2009 20:33

you do realise jesus wasn't white

Tortington · 22/10/2009 20:34

lolol mamazon quite!

daftpunk · 22/10/2009 20:34

of course you can be black and british....i have said that i consider a native Briton someone who was born here...that could mean any colour...

monkeysmama · 22/10/2009 20:34

Thanks Hazeyjane - as I said, I don't usually post on these threads but wanted people to know that it was "normal" people there today!
