They've just announced on bbc that Vanessa George and two others (one man and one woman) have pleaded guilty to child sexual asalts and distribution of images.

Wannabe - I think one of the problems is that people tend to believe everything they read in newspapers and so much of what is reported (especially in the tabloids) is simply not true. I have heard journalists actually admit this, if they don't have any information, they make it up - their prime aim is to sell papers. The fact of the matter is that none of us have any idea what VG is thinking/feeling/sayingin relation to her crimes, her imprisonment or what she is saying to her husband. I think the media is totally irresponsible in their reporting and I think it so unfortunate that people will believe anything so long as it is in print.

I was simply trying to take the debate a little further on to see if anyone on MN had any ideas about possible motives for such horrific crimes but I can see that I am going to be misinterpreted. I am NOT trying to excuse VG or place the burden of the responsibility of the man. At the risk of repeating myself I was simply wondering if her r/ship with the man had any specific bearing on what happened. It seems people are generally not interested in looking at motives for crimes so perhaps I am in the minority here.

I've got my own personal reasons to have a go at people like that, They ruined my childhood and to me they are just sick individuals who only think of themselves.
There is nothing to understand, lock them all up!
Maybe I'm not being rational but this is MN and if I ever met the person who made my childhood hell then I'd gladly shoot them!
And yes, I've had counseling.

NanaNina - I don't think you will ever get anywhere trying to understand these crimes. I agree that it is usually important to try to understand the roots of a crime in order to try to prevent further crimes. But I honestly think that paedophiles are impossible to understand, I think thier minds must work in a way that is so different to ours that we stand little chance of ever being able to fully comprehend - and I wouldn't want to. But I would guess her motives were - she wanted to because she thought she would get 'sexual gratification' for it, and she had the mistaken idea that it was her 'right' to treat those babies as objects for her own use. [feeling sick emoticon] Anything else IMO is only an excuse.

Also I believe the vast majority of abused children do not grow up to be abusers, rather that childhood abuse is given as poor excuse for paedophilia. We all as adults have the responsibility for and power to control our own behaviour regardless of our childhood.

Ripeberry - I'm sorry to hear of your childhood abuse and that does explain your feelings, and I'm sure that counselling cannot erase all the hurt and pain that you suffered and will continue to suffer.

Motherducky - I agree with you in one sense - it isn't really possible to understand such heinous crimes, but I was just interested to see if anyone had any views about this.

I didn't say that the "vast majority" of children abused grow up to be abusers but I am aware after 30 years of childrens services social work that it is sadly the case the some victims of abuse (be it sexual or otherwise) do grow up to become perpetrators and this is true of women in a minority of cases as well as men.

Thank you Nanania, I've got two young daughters myself and I NEVER want anything like that to happen to them. My parents were young, in a foreign country and were too trusting of strangers (he used to babysit me and my brother).

String the fuckers up. Sick beyond belief. If you had a child at that nursery you would want to kill them.

neenz · 09/10/2009 13:28

No, chattermouse, I would not want to kill them. I would want to take care of my DCs and make sure they were helped.
