suprised as this will affect us
wonder if they will all be allowed over here now.
can we keep taking all these people, considering the goverment is talking about cutting education due to lack of money. it isn't like they are fleeing a war torn country.

orangefish - isn't the claim that all immigrants 'are very hard working' just as much a stereotype as the claim that they are all scroungers? Akin to suggesting all Black people are good at sports - just because it's apparently positive, doesn't make it any less of a stereotype.

Am sure prospective immigrants to the UK are just, you know, ordinary human beings - some of them fine upstanding citizens, some of them not as wonderful, just like the rest of us.

Going back to 'why the UK?' I have just been reading some research (in French) at www.conflits.org/index1066.html

It's from 2002 when the migrants were staying in the Sangatte Red Cross centre.

As well as reasons previously mentioned on this thread (no ID cards, friends and family already in UK) it also says that a big difference between the two countries is that once asylum has been requested, the UK finds accomodation for the asylum seekers while their request is processed but this doesn't happen in France.
According to the research both countries refuse a similar percentage of requests.

well edam if they come specificially to the UK to work and earn money for their families back home, IME, they are on the whole pretty hard working actually. Most of them do not have the option of claiming benefits, most of them live in cramped accomodation to save money for families, of course they may not be all sweetness and light but if you are talking about economic migrants then I think on the whole they are pretty hard working.

On the issue of there just not being enough room to house people entering the UK, I'm always curious about the amount of derelict council housing you seem to have in your country.

Strange system to have the facility to house people yet leave the dwellings to rot.

the UK is a soft touch..that's why they come here..

if they were genuine they would stay in the first country they got to...(turkey..?)

why i will vote UKIP from now on.

pofacedandproud · 24/09/2009 10:50

oh good god.

Jimmychasesducks · 24/09/2009 10:51

agree DP (Apart from the last sentance)

noddyholder · 24/09/2009 10:53

Some of the ignorance and racism on this thread is .

Jimmychasesducks · 24/09/2009 10:55

Racism.....??
why is it racist to say that there isn't room for all these people??
can we not debate this now without the R word.

daftpunk · 24/09/2009 10:57

nothing racist or ignorant to say the UK is a soft touch...it is...and that's why they cross god knows how many countries to get here..

it's ignorant to keep letting them in.

no, i have never had to fill in a benefits form..and you're right, i probably wouldn't bother for £20 a month....but i reckon they have people helping them fill out all those forms...what do you think .?

donnie · 24/09/2009 11:45

agree with noddyholder and nighby.

And to whoever mentioned the housing shortage? oh, actually that's mainly because a tiny percentage of rich people own the majority of land and property. And governments over the years have consistently refused to compel mass landlords to allow their empty properties to be used for letting people actually live in them. Go and do a bit of research. It is a scandal.

Oh yes, lots of (not very well veiled) racism on here. Reminds me of that lovely phrase 'indigenous population' the BNP uses.A lot of people on this thread aren't saying it - but that's what they are thinking.

noddyholder · 24/09/2009 11:46

Thank god donnie its not just me I don't think the racism is veiled at all.

donnie · 24/09/2009 11:47

'keep letting them in' - FFS listen to yourself DP.

Yeah cos it's that easy to get asylum in the UK. No detention centres or anything. No Yarlwoods, oh no. It's all on a silver salver.

Jimmychasesducks · 24/09/2009 11:50

so where will these people live?
who will pay for their health care(hwich I shoul imagine they will need after living in such terrible conditions)??
How big do you think the pot is?
love the way people cry racism to stifle debate.

daftpunk · 24/09/2009 11:52

veiled racism..? where..?

daftpunk · 24/09/2009 12:00

donnie...are you aware of the attitudes alot of these immigrants have towards women..?....the way they treat women in afghanistan...and you feel sorry for them..?

mehdismummy · 24/09/2009 12:07

riven! how are the like of you doing, havent seen you for a while, hope you ok. i dont think anyone knows what its like to be in the situation where you have to camp in a jungle just to try and get a better life, why should anyone have the right to be told where they can and cant live, who says certain people must live here, there etc? the whole world has gone to shit. how can it be right that children are dying of starvation and footballers are getting tens of thousands pounds a week to kick a ball about? why should other eu countries be allowed to come and live here but not other countries, who decides this stuff?

noddyholder · 24/09/2009 12:13

Did you see some of those men sobbing at being seperated from thir children? We need to stop being so insular and think global and humanitarian then we might understand each other better and not be tempted to fly planes into buildings and blow each other sky high

mehdismummy · 24/09/2009 12:19

or sell weapons to other countries, or train terrorists or not step into help the rwanda massacre happened but only step in if we can make a profit?

Jimmychasesducks · 24/09/2009 12:26

noddy I would be happy to think global, but sadkly seeing my life is a constant battle to get help form the ever swindling poy, I can't affor to,
I can only assume that the people who are happy to go global in their thinking know it won't affect them.
thing is it will affect me, not only in the short term but the long term too,.
