If the Tories come into power, tax credits could be axed :-O

In the news today. Im appalled. Talking about how tax credits create a demotivation to earn more etc etc

Im disgusted, no mention of if it would be replaced with something else.

we both work, we get our wages at the end of the month and within 3 days its gone on bils, we then live day to day off the tax credits. we'd be f**d hope they dont end up in power....

Yes, Ego, of course you do! Otherwise the taxpayer is going to be paying for 24 hour nursing for said relative, which would come in at a lot more than £2000 per month.

Contrary to popular belief the government isn't full of fuckmuppets, even they can see it is better and cheaper for people to be cared for by family than strangers and as people can't live on fresh air they need to supplement the carers income.

TheEgoHasLanded · 02/09/2009 21:27

actually janos..i probably am who you think i am..and it's true, i have lived off my husband for years...but i have supported him and brought up 4 dc without taking a penny in benefits....we are a partnership.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 02/09/2009 21:30

Smug

2shoes · 02/09/2009 21:34

so no child benefit

Remotew · 02/09/2009 21:42

Good point about the child benefit. I personally wouldn't want to live of a man, bringing up children or not. I would always want to earn my own money.

Ewe · 02/09/2009 21:43

Ego, that is great for you. I am sure if all the lone parents could be happily married and live off there husbands income they would. Equally I am sure all lower earners would love to earn enough to support a wife and four children.

This is not possible however as people divorce, people die and bad things happen. I think you would do well to try and remember this and consider yourself lucky instead of being so insufferably smug. Be grateful for fucks sake.

Remotew · 02/09/2009 21:43

Sorry 'off a man'.

Ewe · 02/09/2009 21:44

Oh and FWIW, I sometimes feel guilty about receiving (minimal) tax credits, god knows why, I've paid in enough!

Now I am going to think of it as personally spending your household income tax payments, will go a long long way to easing any traces of guilt

daisy5678 · 02/09/2009 21:46

Ego: "what do these people want..?"

These people...? Don't do the distancing thing. This could be you, this could be your child, your friend, anyone.

"if you have to stay at home to care for a disabled relative then that's what you do....do you expect to get a couple of grand a month from the tax payer....?"

Those people who do stay at home deserve not to have their difficult circumstances exacerbated by poverty. And if you can't see that, you are indeed beyond help.

I'll give you an example: if I suddenly couldn't cope with my son anymore, the only type of residential place which could cater for him costs about £100,000 a year. Much better for a bit of DLA and social services funding to be shoved my way to help me to care for him at home. Other children/ relatives would cost even more for SS to 'care' for them. So us 'getting money from the tax payer' is actually a much better deal for the tax payer (unless you are suggesting that perhaps we dispose of all disabled/ ill/ old people so that nobody has to do any caring or paying? Hmmm, probably next 'contraversial' thing on your list. Why do you deliberately wind people up?

"i genuinely don't understand. "

Well done! Finally, something you've said that makes sense and is true.

TheEgoHasLanded · 02/09/2009 22:13

sorry, didn't mean to sound uncaring, i'm not at all really..

and i didn't think this would turn into a SN thread, i never come out well on those..

i just think the benefit system is often abused and needs looking at...that's all..

anyway, as i've been "outed" on this thread i might aswell change back to daftpunk..

(thanks 2shoes)

2shoes · 02/09/2009 22:16

thats ok, I think most people knew who you were. so hardly a secret.

if you have to stay at home to care for a disabled relative then that's what you do....do you expect to get a couple of grand a month from the tax payer....?

i genuinely don't understand.

TheEgoHasLanded · 02/09/2009 22:21

2shoes · 02/09/2009 22:29

and then post in exactly the same was as under the other name...... ok if you say so

daisy5678 · 02/09/2009 22:30

hardly think you can really start crying for sympathy after showing your complete lack of any yourself, to be honest!

TheEgoHasLanded · 02/09/2009 22:33

people search for names..not style of posting..or is there a search function for "smug daily mail reader who loves herself"

i can't change the way i post...this is me.

TheEgoHasLanded · 02/09/2009 22:40

givememoresleep..

i'm not crying for anything...but if you want to give me some sympathy.... i'll take it..

genuinely sorry if i have upset anyone....and 2shoes, you know i mean that..

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 03/09/2009 07:27

'Yes, Ego, of course you do! Otherwise the taxpayer is going to be paying for 24 hour nursing for said relative, which would come in at a lot more than £2000 per month.'

Couple of grand? Carers get just over £200 per MONTH for caring full time.
CTC is only paid to parents when their caree is a child. And DLA is paid to the disabled person themselves to help with the extra expense. But carers get fuck all. And we're including parents caring full time for an adult child, elderly people caring for a spouse (then you don't get Carers anyhow)
Maybe we should start a thread on Carers and how successive Govts have fucked them over.

TheEgoHasLanded · 03/09/2009 09:22

hi riven...not sure if you're around today, but if you are maybe you could answer some questions for me;

i was taliking about this thread with dh last night...he wants to know what would happen if he had to give up work to look after me (say i got an illness and needed 24 hour care)...who would pay our mortgage and all our other bills..?

daisy5678 · 03/09/2009 09:38

Also direct payyments are given to carers. And that can add up. All these payments are necessary though.

2shoes · 03/09/2009 10:14

ego, you would have to go cap in hand to ss and the dla, and hope you get some money, and then get into debt.
just like most carers

TheEgoHasLanded · 03/09/2009 10:29

that's what i dont understand 2shoes...our mortgage is £1200pm, other regular bills, council tax etc, total about £600pm, with food we need £2000 a month just to survive....would SS pay that ?

2shoes · 03/09/2009 10:33

in a word no.
your dh would have to give up work and exist on carers allowance(£50 something a week) you might get income support, not sure, but that wouldn't be that much, housing benifit would just pay the interest on your mortgage(unless that has changed now)
basically it all adds up, but it would never be £2000 a month.
and you have to add in all the extras, the moment you put the word disabled in the price goes up, so every thing goes up.
saying that, you can get help with payments for carers, so perhaps he wouldn't have to give up work.

TheEgoHasLanded · 03/09/2009 10:45

thanks 2shoes..

hope i never get ill..

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 03/09/2009 10:50

Ego, he'd get income support, mortgage interest relief which just pays the interest.
Plus £50 a week carers allowance which is then removed from your income support.
It wouldn't add up to £2000 per month.
You'd probably lose the house and live in poverty like most carers.
DH has to work part time as he is dd's carer. He can only work the hours she is at school and not sick. After 3.30, holidays and when she is sick he cannot work. But because even that part time wage is more than £90 per week, he doesn't get Carers Allowance despite caring over 100 hours per week for dd and for me.

SS might give him 8 hours a week direct payments to pay for an agency carer to give him a break. If he was lucky. Fairly often they don't. Direct payments may only be used to pay for help (not for food/mortgage etc)

So, in yur scenario, if your dh gave up work to care for you you would be living in poverty like most carers. Thats how it is, even under labour. How much worse will it be under the Tories?
Cant wait...

TheEgoHasLanded · 03/09/2009 11:04

that's not good is it.... carers should be helped more.

not sure what the tories will do... they arn't too hot on helping immigrants and single mothers...so maybe they'll give you the money labour currently spends on them..?
