i've always known what it means but i thought it had become so mainstream that it was no longer offensive and the link was largely lost, and the word had become a stand alone term people used when trying not to swear.
geography has a lot to do with it as well,as with a lot of terms. e.g. packie in australia isn't offensive, and for years over here shite was not considered a swear word but shit was (bizarre as it sounds)

DC apologised for it, the NOW show on Radio4 did a great song about it, I think it's more widespread than just MNers knowing the other meaning .
