Here's one prediction www.predict09.eu/default/en-us/state_analyses.aspx#united

Cheeringly, it reckons that the BNP won't win a seat. Here's hoping.

Stupid Toynbee is suggesting that Tories not being in dripping wet group on Europe is a help to BNP. WTF? She never stops talking crap.

SomeGuy · 08/06/2009 02:10

Well the BNP's first MEP definitely understands it.

policywonk · 08/06/2009 02:13

9 per cent nationwide not brilliant for Greens, I'd have thought.

Jeez, I'm depressed.

Good night everyone...

SomeGuy · 08/06/2009 02:13

Seriously Toynbee is a moron. BNP vote share has gone up only 1% nationally, they've ended up with 2 seats. Why? Because Labour are a disaster.

It's really not an endorsement for fascism, it's just another symptom of a rotten government.

Dearthworm · 08/06/2009 07:08

It is possible, isn't it, that having two MEPs will just allow the BNP to be called on their hypocritical and racist policies? Harder for them to get away with disingenuous rhetoric when they are actually in decision-making arenas? Or am I just scraping around for a non-existent bright side?

Certainly I don't think that the greater possibility of a BNP MP should make us afraid of PR. If this strand of opinion exists in the UK it is possibily better that it shouold be acknowledged and held to account by a presence in parliament? And we should have the confidence to imagine that anti-racism in our politics is strong enough to incorporate and constrain a racist presence?

The lack of an intuitively fair correlation between vote share and presence shows that PR is only a vague general principle and everything of value lies in the detail. We need a good quality national debate about which system of PR to endorse -- they are all more-or-less gerrymandering, so it is a question of which gerrymandering is least unfair.

One thing to consider is that we need a system which produces representative policy outcomes, as well as a correlation between vote-share and parliamentary presence: a system which faithfully reflects opinion in terms of the distribution of parties might be one which stalemates the actual production of policy, or allows a small party to hold larger parties hostage.

Is there any clear idea of a system that would work well in the UK?

Blackduck · 08/06/2009 07:32

I am just so depressed - this has to be the worse day in British politics that I can remember and I'm OLD...BNP for Gods sake! Whatever you think of the major parties letting the BNP in is just, well words fail me, UKIP as well....

daftpunk · 08/06/2009 07:55

Blackduck; could see it coming though..couldn't you?....people in certain areas of the UK feel let down and like no one is listening to them ...whether those concerns are real or imagined i don't know...i don't live in Burnley.

there is no point in people getting hysterical....labour need to get out there and find out why this is happening....traditional left wing towns have turned far-right in a few years...

Flamesparrow · 08/06/2009 08:02

So current results are Cons, UKIP, Labour.... anyone else very depressed???

I was another who voted green, and my mum planned to as well but ended up not being able to make the voting (very good personal reasons - she always votes)

Blackduck · 08/06/2009 08:05

I knew people were pssed off, so am I - I didn't vote the way I usually do, but a. I went and voted and b. I made damn sure that my vote wasn't for the likes of the BNP! I am no hysterical, just bl*dy depressed that people like that have now been legitimised and will be given air time....

Hassled · 08/06/2009 08:10

WTF were they thinking? Is there something in the water in the NW and Yorks/Humber? I felt like crying when I heard - I bloody despair.

LittleRedCourgette · 08/06/2009 08:21

Working in Burnley today. Atmosphere will be dismal. My Asian boss will probably be wondering if any of his white employees are racist fuckwits who voted the BNP in. I know at least one probably is and I'll be expressing my dismay very loudly to her today.

Hassled - there was nothing in the water I was drinking! Many of us were opposed to the BNP and actively fought to stop this happening. Guess apathy won again.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 08/06/2009 08:23

Can't believe 1 in 10 people in Yorkshire voted for BNP. Absolutely horrified.

Portofino · 08/06/2009 08:30

I was thinking that I was glad that I'm not in the UK at the mo, then checked the Belgian results. Vlaams Belang, who are the local far right party, came 3rd. So it's the same here. If I should bump into Nick Griffin in the street, would IBU to gob in his nasty Nazi, mysogynist face?

Hassled · 08/06/2009 08:33

Portofino - you would definately NBU

daftpunk · 08/06/2009 08:34

portofino...far-right parties have done well(ish) all over europe.

PenelopePitstops · 08/06/2009 09:33

I'm disgussted in the NW, I voted in that area to try and stop the BNP!

Was I imagining that some Danish results were released on Thursday and they were very far right? or was that for something else, I vaugely remember listening to radio 5!

Blackduck · 08/06/2009 09:38

the left got trounced across Europe, not just in the UK...

UpSinceCrapOClock · 08/06/2009 09:43

Danish results can't have been released on Thursday as the election was only yesterday in Denmark. Results have come in though and the far-right party (Dansk Folkeparti) in Denmark is 4th with 15.3% (out of 9). Not keen on this new European trend for far-right parties increasing in support

smugmumofboys · 08/06/2009 09:43

I'm in the NW and feel sooo depressed. But, I'm not surprised tbh. The BNP's publicity was a lot more out there than any other party's. They put posters on lamp posts along the A559 (big dual carriageway) and all the other parties could muster was a crappy leaflet.

PenelopePitstops · 08/06/2009 09:50

smugmum, i found that too.

I live near manchster city centre and the BNP seemed to leafelt like crazy, especially in student areas!

The only other party I had a leaflet from was the liberals, no one canvassed or spoke to anyone I know about the election.

Peachy · 08/06/2009 09:58

Porto my good side says yes you would bu U to gob on him, my evil side says 'but who cares...'

Saw him on TV this morning saying he wasn't there to represent non white constituency members, (although would talk to Sikhs who were being atrgetted by Apedophles- WTF? ) seems to me, as he is now or about to be employed as a MEP (God forgive oyur society) that he should immediately sacked or at least warned for refusing to carry out his role, and intimidating poeple into not approaching him for help.

Nasty, evil little man. Only glimmer of hope is that nationally (relevant to us as we fon't live in the north) green aprties have riseen by a 1% more than BNP, so it does seem that epoplewere deliberately seeking protest votes. Not entirely happy about number of UKIP MEP's eitehr, but it pales into significance.

I understand that tehre are some very real issues regarding job retention, immigration etc but a bigot is clearly not the man to address these.

AbbyLubber · 08/06/2009 10:04

Don't all console yourselves too fast with the idea that BNP voters somehow didn't know what they were doing. Yeah, they probalby don't know about the BNP guy who actually advocates deportation and even death camps - while denying Hitler used them, of course - but ignorant but dissatisfed people brought Hitler to power as well.

Think about this: if Cameron doesn't get a majority in the Commons and the BNP has an MP or two and UKIP a couple, what do you think Cameron will do? Just what the German centre-right did with Hitler...

Yes, this sounds panicky. Yes, the overall BNP vote didn't go up. But it's never a good idea to be complacent about fascists. Better to panic prematurely than ignore the hideous lessons of history.

Pinkglow · 08/06/2009 10:13

Just woken up and looked at the bbc for the results.............God im now depressed

agree completely with Abbylubber, never be complacent.

Im in london and the BNP sent us about 3 leaflets I remember in about the space of 2 weeks.

foreveroptimistic · 08/06/2009 10:18

I was shocked and disgusted when I discovered that a family member had considered voting the BNP. I asked her if she realised what she they actually stood for, she wasn't that clued up on their policies and had fallen for the hype. But to be honest I am not that surprised that the BNP are becoming more popular in working class areas, people need to believe that the politicans represent their interests and sadly I feel that a lot of working class people feel that the BNP are more in touch with them than the Labour party are.

Stretch · 08/06/2009 10:20

Hopefully, it will be a case of, 'give them enough rope..' NG is already saying things he really shoudn't on TV! About not representing non-whites.

I can't seem to find out the results for Leicester (north-west I think) Can anyone help??
