That looks awful but sadly, the girl has no-one to blame but herself.

Mrsprepared · 01/05/2009 16:38

mildmannered: I don't think her mother knew what she was planning to do, she had given her money to go to a fair.

Saltire · 01/05/2009 16:38

She does if there was a sign saying not be used by under 18(or is it 16?)

I don't think at 10 she knew the implications of what she was doing. Why would a 10 year old want a sun tan anyway? Something wrong here.

namebacon · 01/05/2009 16:40

And 10 year olds shouldn't be at fairgrounds unaccompanied either!!!!! There are some horrid lowlifes that hang around fairgrounds.

True Saltire but would a 10 year old have known if she stayed on too long she could cause permeant damage?
I've never been on one and was shocked there are ones out there that aren't supervised.

namebacon · 01/05/2009 16:42

FluffyBunny, surely if you have a 10 year old that doesn't understand what "not to be used by anyone under 16" means, then you don't let them out on their own.

Mrsprepared · 01/05/2009 16:44

namebacon I agree, 10 is far to young to be wandering around on your own, so I suppose her parents are indirectly to blame.

Saltire · 01/05/2009 16:44

from BBC link
"A sign on the door at the Electrik Avenue tanning centre reads: "Strictly over 16s only."

Ds is 10, I don't think he'd know the implications of doing this to be honest. A 10 year old would see the age limit and not know what it means (I think). Do 10 year olds know about the effects of sun beds, skin cancer, aging etc?

abbierhodes · 01/05/2009 16:50

[Hmm] Where there's blame, there's a claim.

abbierhodes · 01/05/2009 16:51

Should have been sorry

namebacon · 01/05/2009 16:51

It doesn't matter if a 10 year old knows the implications of skin cancer or not. If a sign tells them they can't use something, they can't use it.

moffat · 01/05/2009 16:52

How horrible for the poor thing. I will go against the grain here and say that tanning salons should not be unmanned. There are people out there who for whatever reason - maybe cannot read, people with learning difficulties, people who are just silly in their pursuit of a tan - will not always follow the rules. And for something that dangerous there should be proper supervision.

muffle · 01/05/2009 16:57

Yes I'm really amazed that something that can cause cancer and dangerous burning is just sitting there with no staff and anyone can walk in. AND it's something that daft 10yo girls may aspire to as well. It's like putting fag vending machines on the street. Should be banned IMO.

pointydog · 01/05/2009 16:59

There is absolutely no way that people should be allowed to set up a business where there are unmanned, coin-operated tanning beds.
I am surprised that so many of you are just blaming the child.

Unmanned, coin-operated tanning beds, ffs!

The child did not go to the fair on her own. She went with an older cousin. Many many children will do this, you bunch of mnetters.

Those tanning saloons should be banned, and the owners sued for any injuries.
They should just NOT be there...end of.
And as Moffat says, some people just don't follow rules, what if someone used one of those places to injure someone on purpose?

pointydog · 01/05/2009 17:01

I might put a big sharp pointy knife in the middle of the park and a sign beside it saying 'do not touch if you are under 12'. And if a silly child hurts themselves on it (no doubt with silly parents too), I will say, 'serves you right'.

namebacon · 01/05/2009 17:01

I agree though, that tanning salons should be manned.
