While we angst about the merits of purees v's BLW, or whether to wean at 5 months or 6 months, some children REALLY suffer

!

georgiemum · 17/04/2009 14:46

Is this 2 seperate cases or are the mums friends/relatives.

I know they say 'feed the baby what you eat' i.e. a little plain roast chicken and boiled potatoes and carrots but calamari????

PORK CRACKLING?

Jesus wept. I am speechless.

LizzyIzzyLou · 17/04/2009 14:49

Am I right in thinking that they still have custody of these poor children?

LizzyIzzyLou · 17/04/2009 14:50

It might have been easier to buy jars but it wouldnt have been as cheap

Iklboo · 17/04/2009 14:51

DH SERIOUSLY used to work with a woman who used to blitz sausages from the chippy to give to her DD when she was weaning.
For 'special occasions' she'd spoon in some curry sauce

ruddynorah · 17/04/2009 14:51

they watered it down and fed it to them through their bottles??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jojay · 17/04/2009 14:52

The article doesn't make it clear where the children are now, but SURELY they can't still have custody??

Just realsied my last post made it sound like it was normal in Australia to do this
I really meant I hadn't heard it on the news!

duchesse · 17/04/2009 14:54

I wonder if they have health visitors in Queensland. I'd like to think that not being able to sit up by a year of age or being weak from malnutrition would be spotted in the UK (although obviously some children slip through the net). I'm quite certain there are plenty of parents in the UK who have not the first idea how to feed their babies and toddlers (just remembering the number of 3 yr old of my acquaintance when mine were small who would only eat coco pops, yoghurt and chicken nuggets), but they are arguably more closely monitored.

Disenchantegg3 · 17/04/2009 14:56

omg

16 months old and couldnt sit up or hold their heads up

what the fuck is up with people??

I don't know what i am more saddened by, the fact that they were fed this crap watered down in their bottles or that they were so ill from having this crap that they couldn't sit up

Heartbreaking

saint2shoes · 17/04/2009 15:31

hmmmmmmm the daily mail

bringonthetrumpets · 17/04/2009 15:31

omg, absolutely heartbreaking. just felt like crying after reading that.

KERALA1 · 17/04/2009 15:38

The thing is takeaways (esp deliveries) aren't particularly cheap compared with just buying some veg and boiling it up.

Disenchantegg3 · 17/04/2009 15:41

True Kerala,

I always feel guilty buying a £10 takaway nowing I could get 2/3 meals out of it.

Makes no sense.

AND low income families (*which I am in and can only guess this family are too) get FREE veg vouchers, I get £36 worth of free fruit, veg and milk every month. Theres really no excuse. Especially with places like Aldi, Lidl and even Tescos, asda ect do 50p/£1 veg offers now.

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 17/04/2009 15:43

it's the fact they were actually "feeding" them mainly water that seems to have been the real problem.... ie they were not getting hardly any calories or nutrients and thus were v v weak and their development suffered. obviously v neglectful and dangerous.....

but some of these posts seem focused on the wrong thing to me.... children in uk dont get taken into care because the eat only value burgers / chips / crisps and sweets do they. many children have totally crap diet, as do many adults. anyone remember the little girl on jamies ministry of food programme on tv who had doner kebab for her tea EVERY NIGHT?

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 17/04/2009 15:45

and what's wrong with giving children calamari??

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 17/04/2009 15:45

so sad that parents can know so little about food and nutrition and how to care for their young babies and children

society is failing, not just the parents

hope the children are now thriving

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 15:46

oooo how many little kiddies have you got!!!

I get £12.40 (just gone up to £3.10p) a week in HS vouchers
