Will certainly watch. Find stuff like this really depressing.

What have we come to when schools are more worried about their damn exclusion figures that about behaviour in their school, which impacts on everyone. I find this depressing too.

I think this simply reflects the bad language heard all around - with TV being a prime example. Until more parents are really bothered about the watershed and force the TV companies to toe the line, more and more swearing will be heard.

Just last week I heard both bitch and bastard at 8 pm - a whole hour before the watershed. I am appalled and have complained but no doubt am in a minority of one.

roisin · 25/04/2005 13:37

I'm looking forward to seeing this programme: though I may not dare watch! I've applied for a job as a 'learning supervisor' at a local secondary school (= classroom assistant+), and am going in tomorrow to another local school to spend a day observing a (very experienced) Maths teacher, who's a good friend of mine. I'm slightly terrified tbh!

I went to a small, pleasant independent school, so haven't even got hazy 20 yr-old memories to fall back on! I've never been in a secondary school - eek!

Tinker · 25/04/2005 13:38

Think you're right sultana. F* is used a lot on here (and by me in real life) but my mother's generation would never have used it.

JoolsToo · 27/04/2005 19:23

don't forget this tonight!

Ooh yes, well done for reminding us Jools, I'd forgotten - and it's straight after Corrie too!

RTKangaMummy · 27/04/2005 20:22

on now

hub2dee · 27/04/2005 20:32

dw (teacher) - "this is how it is"

hub2dee · 27/04/2005 20:35

Not, btw, saying this particular teacher is any good, but this is

happymerryberries · 27/04/2005 20:39

And she admits that she isn't. But that isn't the issue. the issue is the behaviour. Not like when we went to school is it?

RTKangaMummy · 27/04/2005 20:46

I went to a mixed comp with over 1500 pupils

not inner city

Small seaside town

We never had behaviour like this though

CarrieG · 27/04/2005 20:55

Only just seen this, & now I've missed the prog! Bum

Potty1 · 27/04/2005 20:57

My ds, 16, says this is just how it is. And his is not a failing school by any means. Considering the catchment area they do pretty well.

Lots of parents think secondary schools are like they were when they went and really cannot believe that things are that bad. Well they are.

hub2dee · 27/04/2005 20:59

Agree hmb. Needs on the ball head teacher. Supportive senior management. Parents who give a toss. And kids who respect teachers and want to learn.

happymerryberries · 27/04/2005 21:00

I the past I have has some discussions with some mners who don't believe that it is like this. I must confess that in general the school I teach isn't as bad as the ones on thios program.

But I do have some classes that are like these. I would estimate that some classes was about a firth of their time in classes messing about. And that is in a good school.

Biggest bug bear is the constant chat and answering back. Low level stuff but just so damn wearing

hub2dee · 27/04/2005 21:02

hmb, if money was taken out of the equation (ie. you could afford to), would you home school ? (just curious)

hub2dee · 27/04/2005 21:04

perhaps that's a silly q and you're delighted with your kids' schools...

Maybe what I mean is, knowing how it is 'typically' out there, would you suggest home schooling if one / both parents were capable of it / could afford it.

happymerryberries · 27/04/2005 21:08

No, tbh. The school that my kids go to is excellent. It suits their academic and social needs very well. It is also private.

I could happily teach my subject and one or two others at secondary level. But I wouldn't have the first idea how to teach them to rad! Way beyond me! And as for MFT, forget it. I'm not good enough myself. My kids also get a huge amount out of the social side of school (dd is on a residential trip even as I type). I know that youcan do this with home ed, but I am happy with what they have now.

And I'll let you into a secret....I love my job. Shhh don't tell anyone Some of it is shite, but the moment when the kids 'gets' it is unbeatable. And i teach some kids who are so great it is a joy to work with them, and i love my subject. And on a good day, so do they.

happymerryberries · 27/04/2005 21:09

That would be read ....or type or spell!

hunkermunker · 27/04/2005 21:10

Did anyone else watching this wonder what the children had had to eat that day...?

happymerryberries · 27/04/2005 21:12

or why they thought that it was appropriate to use the word 'Fuck' in a classroom. Or down load porn in a lesson.

Diet plays its part but a larger part is that they know that they can do what they damn well please and nothing will happen to them

RTKangaMummy · 27/04/2005 21:13

R u thinking of home ed Hub2dee?

IMHO you must be a deffo brill teacher HMB

IMHO it is the lack of respect that is at the root of this all.

Children should respect teachers as should their parents.
