what a load of bigotted toss How is bile like this even printed? My dd is 4 and has not even noticed. Just vile. But am amazed to learn she has a 4 month old. Am v of her flat tummy!

OP posts:
spokette · 23/02/2009 12:44

I did not even notice her arm and neither did my DTS.

There are a lot of mean-spirited and sanctimonious parents out there who will unfortunately be passing on their narrow, bigotted views to their off-spring.

Gorionine · 23/02/2009 12:56

But they where there before Cerrie started? It does not seem that they have not done it to draw attention to the fact she has a hand missing. I might be wrong but I think that getting read of those gloved
hands for that reason would actually send the message that she should be trated differently and it might not be what she wants. Maybe they should ask her if she is bothered by it and act accordingly but it might no be a oncern for her at all. Maybe I am being insensitive.

Pristina · 23/02/2009 12:57

My six old noticed, and I was glad to have the opportunity to explain how you treat people with disabilities with him. He soaked it all up like a sponge, and I think it will make him a better person in rl.

Her disability is just one small part of her, most of us have a "disability" of one kind or another. That is life. She's not as natural in her job as, say Sid or some of the others, but she'll get better with time.

TwoIfBySea · 23/02/2009 14:56

Surely though if children are scared by her then rather than cosseting them away it is better to discuss why they are feeling scared?

My dts (7) don't watch CBeebies anymore as they are "too old" in their opinion! However when they watched Child Of Our Time, at a much younger age, they did ask a lot of questions about Alison Lapper, who has no arms, or legs for that matter. It was a good opportunity to let them know more about disability. They were all worried because in the episode she was crossing the road with her son and my two panicked that the cars wouldn't see her! Which is my reason to them for not crossing the road alone (cars won't see little people!)

Those comments made were disgusting to be quite honest. Surely if the girl can do her job then it shouldn't matter and children will soon pick her as a favourite or not regardless of how many limbs she has!

littleducks · 23/02/2009 15:12

Its silly, mean behaviour that i wouldnt tolerate from my toddler.

I went to the cbeebies site to send a messsage of support to Cerrie, while trying to find the link i read cbeebies faqs: some are brilliant

  • I'd like to visit Balamory ? where is it?
Balamory is an imaginary town. However, it had some real inspiration ? mainly Tobermory on the island of Mull. Unfortunately, we don't have any information about visiting Tobermory, but you could try the Visit Scotland site for more information.

  • What breed of dog is Pippin from Come Outside?
We are not sure of the exact answer to this! Pippin is roughly third generation bred from the original Benji who was found in a dog sanctuary in California and was himself a mongrel.

  • What breed of dog is Daniel from Tommy Zoom?
    Daniel is a mongrel.

ROFL

mosschops30 · 23/02/2009 15:15

Oh FFS, Im suprised its not that bitch Jan Moir that wrote the article!!

The only people that notice these things are ignorant journalists with no personality, no life, no friends and no fucking morals. The children watching certainly dont notice

mosschops30 · 23/02/2009 15:18

lets hope they mention mumsnet on Radio 2 (as we are usually in the papers on a daily basis now) then they can see that it bothers no-one other than bigotted DM readers of which I am not one anymore after yesterdays drivel

loobeylou · 23/02/2009 16:04

disgusting bigotted tripe, my kids are appalled that anyone can be so nasty about someone with a disability, heaven forbid that kids TV should reflect the real world and have all races and shapes and sizes and even people who have a disability .... should we not educate our kids from a very young age so that they are the tolerant accepting, compassionate generation of tomorrow.

homicidalmatriach · 23/02/2009 16:18

Actually without wishing to be facetious she is a bit crap though isn't she? It's got bog all to do with disability, she can't sing, she grins inanely and reads the autocue in such a wooden style it's a wonder she doesn't get splinters .

I don't know whether it is positive discrimination or not, doesn't really matter. The bloke she's with it equally rubbish IMHO.

MrsWeasley · 23/02/2009 16:26

What a load of rubbish. Most children wouldn't notice they are usually very accepting of others.

If a child did notice and ask surely the parents would just explain. Perhaps that is the problem these children are talking to bothering their parents and not sitting like dummies in front of the TV like the parents want them to !!

Lotster · 23/02/2009 16:30

Ridiculous! I hadn't even noticed myself! And we wonder why SN and physically disabled kids get a hard time in school and college

I do agree she and the new bloke who do the evenings aren't a patch on Chris and Poi though...

myredcardigan · 23/02/2009 16:35

My problem with the article is that it doesn't make clear that those complaining are a minority of bigoted nutters. It almost makes it sound as if that is the general concensus and that the BBC felt the need to come out and give her their support. I truly hope she/they know that the vast majority of parents have no problem with disabled presenters as long as they can do the job.

My DS noticed but he's far more scared of men with beards than he is of a woman with a disability.

Oh and yes, she has been a bit wooden but then she's new tothe job, give her time. The other day I watched a very early location... Kirstie was very drone and wooden. Almost unrecognisable to how she is now.

Sycamoretree · 23/02/2009 16:56

I think the original thread was on DigitalSpy - sorry if that's already been pointed out.

DD 3.5 still hasn't remarked on it...but she did run into the kitchen this morning terrified of the Spoon Baddie in Numberjacks...

Flightattendant27 · 23/02/2009 16:57

Oh CBeebies FAQs are worse than useless aren't they?

'No sorry we can't help you with that' is pretty much standard to every question.

Gorionine · 23/02/2009 19:41

Well , homocidalmatriarch, Poi was quite "woden" as well in her early days (been watching cbeebies for years with the troups). I think it is quite normal to look a bit terrified when you are not quite used to cameras yet...

nickytwotimes · 23/02/2009 19:45

Read this earlier on Digitalspy. Dh and I were horrified at such an awful 'article'. People who feel this way should be ashamed of themselves.

If there are children frightened, it is because of the shite they hear from their idiotic parents.

Desiderata · 23/02/2009 20:32

mosschops, would you care to explain your post?

Were 'bigoted Daily Mail readers' responsible for all the comments, or was it just an article printed by the Daily Mail about people making bigoted comments?

Jeez, this dm hatred crusade gets more anal by the minute ..

Heated · 23/02/2009 20:51

If you look at the DM article the reader comments are as outraged as we are.

Heated · 23/02/2009 20:52

Ok, so "outraged" was a bit of dramatic license, possibly in the style of the DM

arcticwind · 23/02/2009 21:38

kids need to see all sorts to understand that the world is made up of people and not focus on characteristics.

I guess I am 'lucky' in that my dh's cousin has CP so they have grown up with the knowledge that differences do not only mean hair colour, sex, height etc but other things as well.

Kids are so accepting and genuinely helpful it is horrible to see them turned into bigots ...

stramash · 23/02/2009 23:20

I miss Chris and Poi. Where are they? Poi was an actual Telly Tubby wasn't she ?
I couldn't give two hoots how many arms Cerri has or hasn't got but I just don't like her presenting style.
I felt pretty upset when Sue left Cbeebies too, but have recently rediscovered her on CITV. Watching too much telly, clearly.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2009 23:25

stramash, you need to get out more

drlove8 · 23/02/2009 23:34

yup poi was po -the little red one!

pulapula · 23/02/2009 23:34

I find it hard to believe that children are having nightmares because of this, but if they are, it is for the parents to help their children understand about disabilities and ease/understand any anxieties, and not for the BBC to sack someone.

My DD (aged 4) and I didn't even notice Cerrie's arm for quite a while. When I did (I think my mum or DH pointed it out), I thought i'd raise the subject of disability with DD, and mentioned her arm (or lack of it) and DD said "I think she has put it behind her back"! I explained that people don't always have 2 arms etc etc. No nightmares or anything although she doesn't like Robbie Rotten and even I find the "numbertaker" in Numberjacks very disturbing...
