MrsMattie · 23/02/2009 10:23

How horrible.

(Btw: Is there any child not scared of Numberjacks? )

fufflebum · 23/02/2009 10:28

Have not read the article.

Dd did notice and asked why Cerrie had a 'broken arm'. Useful debate about abilities etc in our house.

We just wonder what happened to Chris and Pui. We miss them!!!!

JacquelineBouvier · 23/02/2009 10:31

I couldn't give a monkeys about her so called disability (she looks pretty able to me, doesn't seem like she needs any help!)

I do how ever think she and the other one (?) are a bit crap at this presenting malarky. Although i suppose its not aimed at me is it!

poppy34 · 23/02/2009 10:33

ffs some people really don't live in the real world -forced to discuss difficult issues early.. !!

mayorquimby · 23/02/2009 10:51

surely this is a bit of responsibe reporting from the mail.
idiots trying to get someone fired for being disabled so that they don't have to explain something quite bland to their kids need to be shown that it's unacceptable.

MaggsS · 23/02/2009 11:33

Have just heard this is going to be discussed on Jeremy Vines show on Radio 2 this lunchtime between 12 - 2 pm.
Cerrie is going to be on to tell how hurt she is feeling by all the reports of scared children.
I'll be listening.

UnquietDad · 23/02/2009 11:38

People are mean. Mine are just that little bit too old for CBeebies now so I wasn't actually aware of her. Will be interested to hear what she says on the radio.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2009 11:43

I thought DSs (10 & 8) had not spotted it but it turned out that they had noticed but didn't think it worth commenting on. DD (3) hasn't mentioned it and I'm not pointing it out to her.

edam · 23/02/2009 11:46

ds hasn't mentioned anything so either hasn't noticed or doesn't think it's noteworthy. Must watch Cbeebies with him this afternoon and check.

The idea that children are scared is just barking. What rubbish! Just an excuse to air some very nasty prejudices indeed.

GooseyLoosey · 23/02/2009 11:46

Don't have a problem with the Mail article per se - just hope that the majority of peoples' reaction to it is puzzlement and abhorrence.

The whole idea seems nonsensical to me. IME, most children are not frightened by things were are out of the ordinary - they are curious about them. Mine only noticed when someone pointed it out and then just asked why. They have shown no interest whatsoever in Cerrie's arm since.

I do however agree that the 2 new presenters are not very good - perhaps they will grow into it, but at the moment, they seem very "forced".

headzookeeper · 23/02/2009 11:46

I agree people are mean and that is why I am glad that cerri was hired by cbeebies. My ds3 is 3 next month and born with the exact same condition as her same arm missing and everything. I think she will help him greatly as he can see that there is nothing he cant do when he is older. Also it will have exposed his nursey mates to someone with his disability so when he starts n september they wont be scared of his arm or think it is too alien as the lady from the telly has an arm like that.

SauerKraut · 23/02/2009 11:47

It's strange how those of us who live with this kind of "disability" as no big deal are only made to even consider it as such by parents being ridiculous about what they do and don't want their dcs to see. Have been in that kind of situation - makes me very .

squeaver · 23/02/2009 11:47

This is based on a thread on here.

Sometimes I wonder if the DM starts controversial threads on here just so it can then write about them

5inthebed · 23/02/2009 11:47

That is ridiculous! 9 complaints! No doubt from parents with PFB's who don't want them living in the real world.

Agreeably Cerrie and Alex were a bit wooden when they both started, but are starting to come into their own. Her disability doesn't come into it!

My ds1 only noticed Cerrie had one arm as he has a cousin with the same disability and thought it was quite cool that his cousin isn't the only one.

hippopotamouse · 23/02/2009 11:51

I have a DS(4) and a DD(2) and they did not notice it, I mentioned it one day when they were watching, DS likes to think she was eaten by a shark!

I agree it can only be a good thing to discuss disabilities with our children.

(I do think it odd that they still have handrea, handroid and handrew helping out with Sid and Andy though!)

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 11:54

There were a lot of posters on Another Parenting Forum who were banging on about how their children were "scared". I wonder if DS got the comments from there?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 23/02/2009 11:58

I think the problem with the DM article is that they could easily have ridiculed the naysayers and showed all the reasons why it is a positive thing, but the slant they seem to have put on it is almost suggesting an understanding why children are apparently freaked out by it.

FWIW my 4 and 2 year old haven't even noticed.

UnquietDad · 23/02/2009 12:09

Funny how nobody had a problem with Penny Pocket on Balamory. They even had a whole episode about her negotiating the Big City with her wheelchair.

Gorionine · 23/02/2009 12:30

DS3, 4yo did notice, he said "look mum, she has not got a hand" I said to him that some people are born with missing members and that other do loose them in accident. He then asked if it was hurting her (which seemes to be more of a concern to him than looking "different") I reassured him that I did not think it was painful anymore if she had had an accident(did not know until I read the article in Op that she was born like that).

His only concern was really how SHE felt and he made me really proud. At no moment he said it was scary, I for one do not think it is either.

hippopotamouse, I do not know who Handrea, Handroid and Handrew are, I am just assumimg that they are hand shaped characters of some sort, why do you think it is odd they have kept them?

Highlander · 23/02/2009 12:34

DS1 has never mentioned it. But he does like her 'crazy dancing'

TigersEnglandChick · 23/02/2009 12:36

This is being discussed on Jeremy Vine - Radio 2 - right now ...

hippopotamouse · 23/02/2009 12:41

Gorionine they are gloved hands that stick out the walls, I just felt they were drawing attention to hands unnecessarily thats all

Flightattendant27 · 23/02/2009 12:42

Guessing that the people who complained would like disabled people banned from the high street also...honestly who do they think they are?

LynetteScavo · 23/02/2009 12:42

Oh I have a problem with Penny Pocket - and her friend....they drive me insane.

DS2, who is 5 has noticed, and has commented in a very factual way- like children do.

Certainly no nightmares around here.

Flightattendant27 · 23/02/2009 12:44

Yeah but Lynette that's because they're bonkers isn't it - not the disability side of it at all. Everyone on Balamory is nuts. Granny Murray is even worse.
