Cant believe there is another story like this:

news.aol.co.uk/family-dogs-maul-baby-to-death/article/2009020713191350252763

Thought the idea was to be sensitive with headlines......

wannaBe · 07/02/2009 20:31

and one of them was apparently a staffy. nanny dog indeed.

aGalChangedHerName · 07/02/2009 20:33

Thread on here not long ago saying a Staffie was an ideal pet Dogs and children don't mix imo. They should not be left alone!!

littleducks · 07/02/2009 20:33

sorry, i didnt put the headline title of 'mauled' and thought murder wouldnt work for animals....if you can think of something more apropriate i have no prob with the thread title being changed

Ditto portofino. I really don't want to hide the whole topic but once again I am hiding the thread

Disenchanted3 · 07/02/2009 20:34

Im sorry but anyone who has kids should not have a dog, really.

People say 'I know my dog' blah blah blah, but its an ANIMAL. ffs,

so sad

aGalChangedHerName · 07/02/2009 20:35

The baby was killed wasn't he tho? What should the op have said?

Meglet · 07/02/2009 20:37

I love dogs, but why anyone would mix a staffy (or any dog) and a baby is beyond me.

ihavenewsockson · 07/02/2009 20:37

baby was killed and there are more emotive ways of saying it.

don't think title was inappropriate.

people can have kids adn dogs, but never unsupervised.

when will the message get across?!

wannaBe · 07/02/2009 20:40

"Im sorry but anyone who has kids should not have a dog, really." That's a bit of an overreaction.

There are millions and millions of dogs as family pets, and children being killed by them are so rare that they almost always make it into the news.

Have read the circumstances surrounding this particular case, but when these incidents happen there is invariably something more to the story, i.e. it's a guard dog which shouldn't have been in the vacinity of the kids/dog was known to be agressive/dog was usually kept outside and not used to the children. So something could almost always have been done to prevent these tradgedies from happening.

It is very, very rare for a family pet to suddenly turn without any reason and kill the family children.

psychomum5 · 07/02/2009 20:40

why are you focusing on an entirely truthful title, not offensive in any way, instead of focusing on the tragedy of a baby being killed and the trauma resonating (sp?) thru his poor family???

some people have far too much time on their hands if they have to pick on something so petty.

poor poor baby

wannaBe · 07/02/2009 20:41

haven't read the circumstances ...

edam · 07/02/2009 20:43

how terrible.

I was chased down the road by a bloody Staffordshire bull terrier who only left me alone when it spotted another victim (an elderly lady). Had loads of 'Staffie' owners saying 'oh, they are cuddly and fluffy and wouldn't hurt a fly'.

Wonder how long it will be before one turns up and claims it must have been the Jack Russell leading the poor ickle bunny wunny Staffie astray? (Not that Jack Russells are 'safe' or anything, bloody daft to leave a baby with a dog bred for ratting.)

aGalChangedHerName · 07/02/2009 20:44

The only dogs i know atm are horrible. My pil's dog bit my son and my mums dog has to wear a muzzle so it is an over reaction on my part.

I wouldn't have a dog because even a million to one chance would be too much.

Lilyloo · 07/02/2009 20:46

'Im sorry but anyone who has kids should not have a dog, really.'

There are millions of family's with dogs who are perfectly safe.
Tha's the difference i have a dog and was always brought up with dogs. However ous are fully trained from puppies at the local kennel club. They are not left unsuprevised with the children.
I feel having a dog has lots of positive impacts on our family.

This is very but headline says it as it is.

aGalChangedHerName · 07/02/2009 20:46

Edam agree re the staffy owners saying they are "wonderful" family pets Yeah whatever!!

littleducks · 07/02/2009 20:46

the cicumstances arent clear yet, and im not blaming the family, this must have been terrible for the grandmother and parents and it isnt totally clear if the dogs lived with the baby or were the grandmothers dog

Im just concerned about the number of stories like this recently, is the breeds the problem, are people not given enough advice, should hvs/midwifes mention safety around dogs?

WannaBe - what's a nanny dog?

beeny · 07/02/2009 20:48

I dont think you should have a dog and young children, why take a risk.

wannaBe · 07/02/2009 20:50

aGalChangedHerName I presume you have a car though? And i imagine there's a far greater chance of your children being killed in a car accident/hit by a car than killed by a dog.

Staffies are horrible. They are renouned for being agressive towards other dogs, so it's just a small step to biting a child really.

TheCrackFox · 07/02/2009 20:50

Not a massive fan of Jack Russells (too small and yappy for my liking) but I personally wouldn't go into a house with a Staffie in it. I certainly wouldn't allow my DC's near them.

Lizzylou · 07/02/2009 20:52

How utterly horrific

Personally not keen on any dogs, but agree well bred and disciplined dogs can be valuable and much loved family pets.

Staffies scare the living shit out of me tbh, I wouldn't let my DC be in the same street (knowingly) as a Staffy let alone house.

These dogs (ill)bred as status symbols are bloody dangerous

wannaBe · 07/02/2009 20:52

ilovemydogandMrObama apparently staffies are often referred to as "the nanny dog" because they are so good with children.

mrstimlovejoy · 07/02/2009 20:52

my bil and sil have a staffy and i won't let my dd into the house unless it's locked outside.sil was really off with mil when she last took dd there saying it would never hurt anyone.i know it's their house but they invited dd round to play and knew how we felt about the dog.i was bitten by a dog when i was younger so i'm very wary about any dog.
