Sportscotland might deny a grant of £75,000 to the Isle of Harris Golf club because they won't open on a Sunday. Sportscotland say that under Equality laws they have to ensure that everything they fund is accesible to all, regardless of religious beliefs, sexual orientation etc etc.

Er then they should refuse to shop anywhere that has to adhere to Sunday opening hours.

BennyAndJoon · 21/01/2009 17:24

I can see both sides. I can see why they have that policy, and that if the course is closed all sunday it would mean someone working all week who then observed Sabbat could not go.

But I always feel sorry for peope who are presurised into working on a Sunday so that DH can go to man mecca B&Q.

TDWP - there are no sunday opening hours in Scotland afaik, and even then, they are open for some of Sunday

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/01/2009 17:27

Really, I didn't know Scotland was different with opening hours.

It frustrates me that I can't go to Sainsburys at 6pm on a sunday, not that I have a desperate need , but it just seems silly.

SaltireOShanter · 21/01/2009 17:29

There are Sunday opening hours in Scotland, they open till 6pm I think. But youwill be hard pressed to find any shop open in teh Western isles on a Sunday

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/01/2009 17:31

Better than England then, Ithink it's 10 -4 or 11 - 5, either way only 6 hours.

SaltireOShanter · 21/01/2009 17:32

DWP - I currently live in South of England, but I'm originally from Scotland (the South).

BennyAndJoon · 21/01/2009 17:36

Nah - in-laws live in the borders - etrick

SaltireOShanter · 21/01/2009 17:38

TDWP - no it's Borders slang for people from Galashiels. it derives from years ago (about 25) when the folk of Galashiels didn't have toilets, they sat on buckets - a pail- which left a mark (or Merk as a Scot would say), so Pailmark

Ettricks a nice wee place though

years ago I used to be a youth club leader and once a year would be the regional sports final, with teams from all over Scotland. The teams fromt eh Western Isles used to ahve to be away from the venue, in time to get to the ferry before the last one left on teh Saturday night, otherwise they would be stuck on the mainland till tthe Monday as no ferrys ran on a Sunday

I was joking of course, but now know a new word

georgiemum · 21/01/2009 17:50

There's a Primark in Stirling.

I thought that Harris was relatively small therefore the folk who work at the course would need to work 7 days a week if they opened on Sunday. Didn't they only recently get a Sunday ferry service?

TDWP - next time you meet someone from Galashiels you can say "hello Pailmerk" to them

OP posts:
TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/01/2009 17:55

I'm as likely to do that as I would to say 'pleased to meet you you shit stain' to a client.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/01/2009 17:57

What does 'tranny' mean in Glasgow (perchance you know)

SaltireOShanter · 21/01/2009 17:57

I call all Dhs mates pailmerks(amongst other things) and when I'm annoyed with DH I call him one as well.
