Doesnt this sort of stink of hypercritism? when she said I wont comment until I speak to my 'agent' - was what she meant - I could make some money out of this - I know if every time I speak I have The Sun logo above my head I will bask in the glory?

Isnt talking about how rubbish RB is in bed stooping to the very level that we are accusing RB of? Will RBs granfather not have to read this article and will they not be upset? Sachs has been very dignified about the whole inccident though it has to be said.

Well she hired Max Clifford and there were semi-naked pics of herself in the tabloids the next day from her online websites

I'm guessing they weren't a little gift

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 12:58

If she is canny she will do what abi titmuss does and retain the copyright of her pictures. That would require some forward thinking though.

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 13:01

"The moral of the story has to be - don't mess with Andrew Sachs. " can't you see that Andrew Sachs is the big loser in all of this. Used by the Mail on Sunday to push an anti BBC agenda, dragged into a public issue he clearly doesn't want to be a part of, patronised as an 'elderly man' and then on top of it all his granddaughter (who says she wants it all to be over and claims to be very upset about the stress it has caused her grandfather) sells stories to the tabloids to make a fast buck.

Yeah- right - don't mess with Andrew Sachs

onebatmotherofNormanBates · 30/10/2008 13:03

In principal, no, Izyboy, but it's a question of degree.

It's the point at which the rights of a person not to be hurt begins to outweigh another's right to do as he wishes.

If I ever found myself getting my 15 minutes of fame, any enquiring hacks would probably be able to get procvocative photos of me scantily clad from myspace, bebo, facebook... I am only a member of the last one, but I've been to lots of events, holidays and parties, some fancy dress and I know I appear in lots of photos on all three sites. On facebook you can set your privacy settings as high as you like, but when someone comments on any photo of you, everyone on their list gets access to it.

These days, whenever a story breaks the newspapers find photos this way. I have put no photos on these sites because when you do, you relinquish ownership of them. AFAIK the newspapers don't have to pay anyone for the pics they find and copy. The first tabloid photos of Georgina Baillie were identified as coming from myspace. She worked as a model, so it probably wouldn't be too hard for the newspapers to find photographers willing to sell other snaps too.

"AFAIK the newspapers don't have to pay anyone for the pics they find and copy"

this is not strictly true. Did you know that technically if a BBC reporter holds up a newspaper front on TV with a photograph - they could be breaching someone's copyright.

If someone wanted to persue a paper or a broadcaster for failing to pay for/ask permission to use for a photograph they have ownership of then they could.

Ivegotaheadache · 30/10/2008 13:25

Why does it have to mean anything? Why can't it just be a couple of prats acting like pubescent school boys.
Consentual rhymes with menstrual and maybe he had an OCD type of problem that he wanted her to wash all the time.

If you look hard enough you can create all sorts of meanings where none actually exist.

Quite frankly if GB didn't want any publicity on this matter and wanted to save her GF further embarrassment, she should have just issued a statement.
She may not have started it, but what was the need to go to the Sun and talk about the sex they had?

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 13:32

Ivegotaheadache - some people seem to think it's just deserts for Brand, that he deserves it. A whole 'don't give it out if you can't take it' thing but I think it's quite insulting to suggest that the only avenue for 'revenge' or settling scores that G Baillie has is to do a kiss and tell!

Makes me laugh. All these people are terribly outraged that this poor woman has had her private life dragged up in public and now they suggest that she do the same to get him back. Surely if she is that distressed about it she is doing completely the wrong thing to retaliate in kind. It's bound to make people feel a bit confused by exactly what she meant when she said she was upset.

onebatmotherofNormanBates · 30/10/2008 13:34

MP "Don't pretend it was the equivalent to the rape of a woman."

I did not compare what RB and JR have done to a rape. I compared the public response to each act, and pointed out similarities in the internal logic of both.

"But comparing a comedy act to rape is utter nonsense. It didn't involve consent: but nor does nicking my credt card details. You can't compare that with rape either"

That's true. But you can point out the fact that no-one ever tries to blame the victim of identity theft for having credit cards; they are, however, trying to downplay the damage done to GB because of the other choices she has made.

On your 'only 2 complaints' point. It's entirely predictable that there would be only 2 complaints at the time - the majority of RB's listeners would not have been offended by their actions.

But the fact that those who were offended did not witness the events live, in no way undermines their case.

People who find JR and RB offensive are unlikely to be listening to their show, and are therefore unlikely to hear them make further offensive remarks.

"

equally, if you refuse to look hard enough you can miss all sorts of meanings which do..

I'm not 'terribly outraged that this poor woman has had her private life dragged up in public' (well I am but that is not the main issue for me) nor has anyone, from what I can remember, suggested 'that she do the same to get him back'. As people keep saying, she is just entitled to her right to reply. And as for using the media, well that is what he did, isn't it?

The main issue for me is not who got hurt but that no-one should be allowed to broadcast such utter rubbish on the airways. It was not funny, it was not clever, it was not 'edgy' or 'incisive' or 'avant garde' or whatever. It was offensive and puerile and arguably misogynistic, which should be taken as seriously as racism in terms of something that we will not tolerate in our society.

NBheebieGeebies · 30/10/2008 13:51

I think GB has made this worse for herself now anyway.

RB will be forgotten about soon since he has resigned from the BBC, JR will be the same once the BBC decide his fate today but no doubt Miss Bailey will be banging (excuse the pun) on about it for a while yet.
After seeing that Sun interview, I have no sympathy for the woman at all. Why something like that would "damage her life forever" I really don't know
Talk about milking it.
She hasn't made the situation any better for her Grandad, only worse and of all the media companies to speak to about it, she chose The Sun.

Yep, what RB and JR did went too far and I am absolutely sure that other pre-recorded shows have gone this way before, except that it hasn't been authorised by BBC bosses to go ahead.
As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread the fault should lie with whoever gave the green light for this show to be aired.

skyatnight · 30/10/2008 13:54

Of course both these men have mothers who brought them up. If we're looking for blame, we really ought to start there...

Would you like to comment OneBatMotherOfNormanBates?

Ivegotaheadache · 30/10/2008 13:57

I very frequently do look hard and come to my own conclusions about what is meant by someone's actions or words. But even with a pschology degree I don't consider myself trained in any sort of field that would enable me to make special meaning out of his words. My own analysis of the situation maybe wrong.

And I think that if you personally find RB misogynystic then it would be easy to find the misogyny in his words or actions.

Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own actions, skyatnight

Ivegotaheadache · 30/10/2008 14:00

misogynistic

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 30/10/2008 14:02

I'm with morningpaper and I'vegotaheadache.

And I don't know what I'm going to listen to on R2 tomorrow morning driving to Cornwall. I'd rather listen to JR than news stories about it, or heaven forbid someone deconstructing it into women hatred.

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 14:06

Hey! maybe we should wait until we get her full official statement in the News of the World? before we judge

beaniescreamyb · 30/10/2008 14:09

"Weirdly though, you have absolutely no problem in Brand kissing and telling in this way, saving your disapproval for the woman he decided to publicly expose"

erm... where exactly have I said I have no problem at all with him kissing and telling? I don't have a huge problem with it but I do accept that it wasn't the right thig to do.

I am not agreeing at all that because of her chosen career she somehow deserves it. No one should have to put up with anyone talking publically about a private matter like
the sex they had and I can totally understand why she was so upset and why knowing these things really upset her granddad.
