Have we not had a discussion about this? I'm surprised.

Seedy, sordid, unfunny little men pad obscene amounts of money to be obscene.

What's your view?

Because it is about standards.

I'm not sure that I am glad that RB has resigned but something meaningful had to happen to indicate that what happened, what was broadcast, was not acceptable.

In the light of the huge media and public backlash, suspending them was apparently not sufficient.

As someone else said, it was the last straw and RB has been made an example of (I wouldn't say 'scapegoat' because I don't agree with what he did).

LittleBellaLugosi · 29/10/2008 21:08

Power?

Eh?

fruitstick · 29/10/2008 21:08

Actually Russell Brand bases a large proportion of his act ridiculing the stupidity of The Sun, and their reporting of his personal life in particular.

I suspect this is the real reason The Sun is so interested in the story.

ScottishMummy · 29/10/2008 21:09

thinking georgina is milking a tawdry tale does not make me misogynist.i don't make gender driven preferences and c'mon the girls.and just because i think GB is having her 15min salacious fame doesn't mean i always err on the lads side either

GivePeasAChance · 29/10/2008 21:10

If she hadn't have 'defended' herself I would not have known for sure whether he had shagged her.

And now she is a media whore (no other meaning meant there) and she is fair game to the media agenda hence losing her power.

Bow out, don't comment, and be done with it. Don't enter the race. Keep your dignity.

myredcardigan · 29/10/2008 21:13

Well even before she sold her story everyone was on here saying,'have you seen her?' etc

She can't win. She is being judged either way.

LittleBellaLugosi · 29/10/2008 21:13

But why is the tale tawdry SM?

She did something lots of people do - shagged someone. There's no suggestion that he or she were involved with anyone else and being unfaithful, or that money changed hands or that it happened in public in an inappropriate venue, so why should the tale be tawdry?

LittleBellaLugosi · 29/10/2008 21:18

Funny that the people who were linking to pictures of her before she said anything publicly, weren't commenting on how dignified she was then. Quite the contrary. Before she'd said anything, they'd already decided she probably deserved to have her sex life aired on the BBC.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 29/10/2008 21:21

I started to read that transcript and had to stop (and I am not easily shocked)

They should both be sacked. Its the BBC for gods sake.If they can have standards, who can?

fruitstick · 29/10/2008 21:21

No, but she probably shouldn't be surprised if her sex life becomes public when she has a one night stand with a stand up comedian who has his own radio programme and is well know for talking about his sex life in public.

mabanana · 29/10/2008 21:23

i think there is a rather glorious revolution on the streets feel about this. We are bloody sick of being told to worship people because they are rich, because they are arrogant, because they don't give a fuck about anyone else. We are sick to the back teeth of being patronised, condescended to, and treated like inferior beings. Did you not hear JR and Ricky Gervais (who thinks disabled people are 'fair game') calling the viewers 'muggles' on their show, with clear and obvious contempt. Or saying to a guest to whom he had presented a gift, 'It's shit but it doesn't matter, the taxpayers paid for it, not me'. The self-proclaimed masters of the universes of the City, the billion pound lottery winning chiefs of hedge funds have dragged us into this frightening economic crisis and we are glad to see them fail too. I really think there is a lot of pent-up rage at the way ordinary people are treated with contempt by those who think being rich and/or famous makes them automatically superior to us, and plenty of us are glad to see them in trouble. I hope it really does mean there will be changes made, that this brutish, puerile, sexism will be examined and found wanting, that bulling will no longer be regarded as entertainment, that earning lots of money won't be considered a sign of moral virtue. I'm not holding my breath, but it's a pleasing thought.

fruitstick · 29/10/2008 21:25

mabanada, are you really Robert Peston?

mabanana · 29/10/2008 21:25

And yes, what is 'tawdry' about it? I have slept with men I've regretted. Luckily none of them were so scummy and psychopathic that they thought it would be fun to ring up by grandfather and shout obscenities down the phone at him.

southeastalien · 29/10/2008 21:27

blimey alot of parents really did their children alot of disservice by only let them watch the bbc or listen to radio 4

mabanana · 29/10/2008 21:28

fruitstick
Can't you hear the odd and random emphasis?

wintera · 29/10/2008 21:35

Oh, can we not have a revolution against Z list celebrities and Reality shows instead???!!! Pretty please!!

expatinscotland · 29/10/2008 21:38

BRAVO, mabanana on Wed 29-Oct-08 21:23:57.

BRAVO!

GivePeasAChance · 29/10/2008 21:44

Yes - mabanana - I agree too !

However, picking this particular incident is crap. There are much more offensive things and this just makes us hypocrites.

And her selling out just compounds the hypocrisy.

e.g. Jordan and Peter, and the general pleb-sleb-dom worship. Totally talentless, but rich ( and therefore to be admired !!?) If I ever hear anyone say that Jordan is "really intelligent because of how much money she has made" I will explode.

Dittany - the point is - what is there to defend? She slept with him. And?

All she has done is made herself a media whore and the media now have the power. And she is open to criticism from everyone . e.g. see this thread.

So, her power would have been in staying out of The Sun ( with Max Clifford FFS !!) and keeping out of the celeb/money obsessed circus that mabanana was discussing.

beaniescreamyb · 29/10/2008 21:55

"She could have gone to the press and sold her story at any time during the last 2yrs. Clearly she chose to keep her sex life to herself. He has publicly broadcast the whos and hows. He took that step. Why the hell shouldn't she now tell her side of the story? "

I absolutely agree with this, apart from the last bit. She shouldn't sell her story because it completely strips her of any dignity that the last two years has afforded her!

LittleBellaLugosi · 29/10/2008 21:57

As I said before, people who are now slagging her off for losing her dignity, hadn't actually noticed that she had any dignity before.

morningpaper · 29/10/2008 21:57

I don't know if you noticed, but she was being criticised for quite a bit before anybody heard she was selling her story

By whom?
