One of the problems with jury trials is people not understanding this phrase. It means you can have reasonable doubt. But the system actually seems to allow jurors their own interpretation.

I don't trust the jury system since I was in a jury and two women refused to find someone guilty because they fancied his barrister. There was no way for me to complain about it because what's discussed is meant to be secret.

I know this is a side track, but just in case anyone ever finds themselves in this situation in a jury - you absolutely can do something about it. You send a note to the judge explaining that some of the jurors can't discharge their duty because of a conflict of interest and there would be a re-trial. You can always send a note to the judge.

I had to do it in similar circumstances when one juror wants to return a different verdict than the rest of us based on the appearance of the defendant. I asked us to be recalled to court and reminded of our duty and how to exercise it. Then eventually had to ask for permission for a majority verdict.

That language is no longer used. The test is “sure”.

I was going to say that. I did jury service and remember the judge saying, 'You must be sure'.

God WHY are we still in a world where this isn't common knowledge for lawyers? They all have to do CPD, why don't they have to cover trauma and danger responses in sexual crimes?

Well, I know why. But how does the patriarchy get away with it, all of it.

Winters will know that though. He's playing on the basest views of the jurors.

I remember being on a court preparation course and the barrister telling us that he only needed to convince two members of the jury.

I have a very horrible feeling he’ll be acquitted and then some tv companies will see that as “poor innocent man” and we’ll end up with him fucking everywhere on tv again.

I really hope I’m wrong.

Even if acquitted the end was quite come time ago for him - thankfully. He’s tainted forever thankfully. Which is why Kirsty Gallagher, Bear Grylls etc are nowhere to be seen.

I am so worried he will be acquitted of all charges.

Feeling optimistic my prediction would be guilty on the anal and vaginal rapes and the sexual assault.

Not guilty on the oral rape and the attempted sexual assault.

He's not going to get years and years in jail. You only have to look at the lenient sentencing for many rapists and then early release for good behaviour. The fact there is no forensic evidence, I think he will get a very short sentence. If it's suspended and he goes on the sex offender register RB will see that as a win (whilst still protesting his innocence).

I wish I'd known that. I did try to speak to the Clerk.

I think the prosecution would appeal a light sentence.

Brand was seeking 'approval' and 'adoration', jury told
Ian Winter KC says it is an "extremely curious feature of this case" that out of many, many women Brand had sex with during the period of 1999 to 2009, only three of them say they did not consent.
He suggests that is a "hole" in the prosecution's case, saying they don't have a "case thesis" as to why Brand allegedly raped these three women and none of the many others.
Earlier Winter told the jury that "living a highly promiscuous life is entirely lawful however morally distasteful you may find it". He returns to that theme now, saying "even being manipulative in the pursuit of consensual sex is completely lawful".
He says Brand was "seeking approval" and "seeking adoration".

As a juror this would beg the question - there are only 3 rape allegations before us now. That does not by any means mean that there only 3 rapes …

Is three not three too many? The world has gone mad.

TofuTuesday · 02/11/2026 14:29

I think it will be a really short sentence, possibly suspended, if found guilty.

on another note, the GOSH thing has really surprised me. I don’t think any evidence of this was presented that it happened just RB account but very surprising and quite draconian I think?

Dexternight · 02/11/2026 14:33

Hope the women brave enough to give evidence and those who are still too frighten to come forward get justice that is deserved.

Piglet89 · 02/11/2026 11:56

Jesus Christ. This is what I mean, you see, and why I’m not in favour of jury trials to decide serious criminal cases.

There is no perfect system, but putting this amount of power in the hands of one individual (a judge) who could potentially be bribed, or biased, or racist or anything else is on balance I think a worse system. Juries definitely have problems but the alternative is worse.

I guess it depends on how many counts they find him guilty of. The more of them, the higher chance of some sort of sentence. But i agree that I don't think he'll be jail for a long time, if at all.

I'm sure a lot of us will be feeling uneasy this week until we know the outcome. I have the most belief in the anal rape charge being a guilty verdict but like others I can see a reality in which they won't agree that any charge is beyond a reasonable doubt.

His defence lawyer's closing statement goes beyond simply defending a client and contains views that are so ignorant and disgusting they literally make my stomach turn to read them. Surprising that they didn't scream or try to leave? Acted normally on the outside afterwards so can't have happened? Didn't report immediately so it didn't happen?

This is clearly a man who has had absolutely zero education or prep around trauma response in general. I've worked with many people who have experienced trauma, including sexual assault. None of these womens reactions surprise me, or I suspect any other professional who works therapeutically with trauma. Urgh.'

The defence barrister is just doing his job. He didn't really have a lot to work with did he.

Yes I wonder if the fact he has apparently not offended for a long time, clearly not a danger to the public at present would be taken into consideration. I don't think it should be, I think you do the crime you do the time but I wonder if the public interest there would be weighed.

They do know it.

Same as they know that the victim’s clothing and sex life doesn’t actually have anything to do with rape. However, they know that many people still think “well her skirt was very short” or “she had had sex with him previously….” so it works for in their line of defence.

the scandal is that they’re allowed to do that and judges don’t intervene enough to point it you. But they do know.

People would have assumed that about Mike Tyson and yet he’s rebuilt himself a nice career since leaving prison.

As I say, I hope I’m wrong, but the worry of him being portrayed as some hard-done-by soul who behaved badly but not illegally is there.

Kirsty Gallagher publicly supported him numerous times and only stopped when the negative publicity she was getting for it had her PR people put a line under it.

I know he’s just doing his job but I think Ian Winter has gone against everything the judge said on Friday when he’s “banging on about consistency”. The judge said “experience has shown that inconsistencies sometimes happen whether a person is telling the truth or not”. He also said “the fact a complaint is made late does not make the allegation untrue…” This is the crux of the defence. They saw a programme and decided to make up stories and put themselves through a trial. Why would a woman do that?

I don’t know why you’d discount RB’s flatmate’s evidence (Labour conf) about his behaviour. IW seems to be saying RB was rushing cause they had to check out of their accommodation by 10am! There were two friends who said his behaviour was very odd. And the fact is the friend said he’d admitted to going a bit too far with a woman.

Washingforweeks · 02/11/2026 11:29

Is it today we find out if guilt or not guilty?

No, the judge will sum the case up and then send the jury out to consider their verdict. How long they will take is anyone's guess.

Pplareasthickasshit · 02/11/2026 14:49

I think Laura will leave him eventually. Probably when he wrongs her (again) in some way and then the shades will fall from her eyes.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/11/2026 14:51

I've got a bad feeling about this - I think he'll be found innocent. Which makes me feel sick.

I don't know how many rape allegations the average peson gets but Ian Winter's proud declarion that RB has "only three" is a bar so low even the gutter can't house it.

Lifeomars · 02/11/2026 14:58

MargotLeadbetterOBE · 02/11/2026 12:26

A rapist doesn’t rape everyone they have sex with. Defence reaching much?

Absolutely! the man who got a lengthy jail sentence for sexually assaulting me had a girlfriend who was in court to support him. It made me wonder what kind of a life she had with him and what utter shite he must have told her about what happened.

This makes me so angry, can you imagine telling a burglary victim "If you didn't own such lovely stuff then then nobody would be tempted to steal it" or "If you had better locks on your house then nobody would break in"

Santasbigredbobblehat · 02/11/2026 15:04

I feel confident he will be found guilty on at least 2 of the charges.

These women have been incredibly brave.
