Controversially I think it’s a pretty good defence. I think people are inclined to believe men anyway. I would liken it to a billionaire asking why would I need to steal something when I can buy anything I want?
he was famously sleeping with so many women and so many were more than willing to sleep with him, why would he need to do this.
to be clear I don’t agree, but I just think it could convince some people.

Yeah I agree. I think it will make people think 'yeah good point! Why aren't there more victims?' I was feeling pretty hopeful after hearing the prosecutions closing speech on Friday that people may believe the women. But I'm losing faith in that now.

One of the problems with jury trials is people not understanding this phrase. It means you can have reasonable doubt. But the system actually seems to allow jurors their own interpretation.

I don't trust the jury system since I was in a jury and two women refused to find someone guilty because they fancied his barrister. There was no way for me to complain about it because what's discussed is meant to be secret.

Matters such as inappropriate jury behaviour can be reported to the judge.

Well, at the time I went to the Clerk of the Court twice and was told I couldn't report anything. He wouldn't even listen to what it was.

Klippin · 02/11/2026 13:33

Surprised this wasn’t established in the defense.

One of the four presentations of rapists….

Reassurance-seeking rapist: Believed to be the most common serial type […] This rapist is polite and tries to involve the victim, exhibiting signs of "affection" by hugging and kissing. He fantasizes that the sex is consensual and the victim will enjoy it. Some ask the victim to compare their sexual performance to that of other men, or ask the victim if she would like to get together again - in rare cases, even giving their names and phone numbers to their victims.

Maybe they couldn’t present general evidence as to behaviours after trauma, and could only have had a clinician speak to knowledge of a specific complainant? I don’t know just thinking maybe you can’t present expert evidence not linked directly to the complainant/defendant.

SpanishFly · 02/11/2026 13:35

I'm hoping that Bernard is there to give Laura a lift home when RB is huckled off to jail.

Piglet89 · 02/11/2026 13:36

His entire debauched sex life, internet searchable by his kids once they’re old enough. It’s so seedy. 🤢

How is she even going to explain to their kids why daddy has gone to jail? It’s just so awful!

Picoloangel · 02/11/2026 13:40

Thanks for the new thread.

JustAnotherWhinger · 02/11/2026 13:43

I have a very horrible feeling he’ll be acquitted and then some tv companies will see that as “poor innocent man” and we’ll end up with him fucking everywhere on tv again.

I really hope I’m wrong.

It's all irrelevant though really isn't it. Men and women can have as many partners as they choose, and there's nothing wrong with enjoying sex with different people. The fact is the female complainants are saying they hadn't consented. That is the only issue for the jury to decide - whether there was consent.

mummabubs · 02/11/2026 13:47

I'm sure a lot of us will be feeling uneasy this week until we know the outcome. I have the most belief in the anal rape charge being a guilty verdict but like others I can see a reality in which they won't agree that any charge is beyond a reasonable doubt.

His defence lawyer's closing statement goes beyond simply defending a client and contains views that are so ignorant and disgusting they literally make my stomach turn to read them. Surprising that they didn't scream or try to leave? Acted normally on the outside afterwards so can't have happened? Didn't report immediately so it didn't happen?

This is clearly a man who has had absolutely zero education or prep around trauma response in general. I've worked with many people who have experienced trauma, including sexual assault. None of these womens reactions surprise me, or I suspect any other professional who works therapeutically with trauma. Urgh.'

@PrincessofWills I know it’s irrelevant to the trial and I know what the prosecution needs to prove (which is not just that they actually consented - it’s enough if he reasonably believed they consented - a subtle but important nuance).

I am making a general point about the fact that reporting means the facts of this case are now a matter of public record, which will likely affect his kids in the future.

I don’t think everywhere. I think the proselytising might be too much for even GB news.

I'm not sure. What's in it for the women to go through this ordeal then if that's the case? And if he could have whoever he wanted, why not just stop when it was clear the woman wasn't as into it as he was?

I'm wondering why Bernard has only turned up now. Don't know anything about him or his character etc but Kirsty worked for GB News for a while so I'll raise an eyebrow at that.

thestudio · 02/11/2026 13:51

I'm horrified that the judge didn't point out the 'only three rapes have been reported' point or that the prosecution didn't object (is that even possible in a real rather than TV court?!)

Piglet89 · 02/11/2026 13:53

I wonder how many times the judge interjected in the defence’s closing, or whether that’s even a done thing.

Well let's hope the jury aren't stupid enough to believe that rapists are never good looking or wealthy.

Yes and they are the 💯 without a doubt the innocent party in all this who will be receiving the biggest punishment.

God WHY are we still in a world where this isn't common knowledge for lawyers? They all have to do CPD, why don't they have to cover trauma and danger responses in sexual crimes?

Well, I know why. But how does the patriarchy get away with it, all of it.

Ian Winter KC proving why so many women never feel able to speak up.

It took me 10 years to even tell a therapist I had been raped. And that was after many appointments before I felt safe too. And the guy who raped me wasn't a celebrity

Couldn't agree more. His views are vile and indeed highlight the reason so many victims don't speak out. In fact I only reported my abuse to the police 12 years after it occurred - because I saw the Russell Brand dispatches documentary and felt inspired by the bravery of the women featured within. By Ian Winter's 'logic' I'm lying. I also didn't scream, or try to leave. I mastered behaving normally on the outside as to do anything else would mean having to accept what had happened/ was happening to myself. I'm not religious but I'm close to praying that at least some members of the jury can recognise how utterly wrong and inaccurate Ian Winter's statement is in places.

Defence KC: i know it’s rather beastly behaviour but it’s only three rapes therefore you must acquit. 🥴
