The opening scene of Fleabag seems to have ages badly given today's testimony.....maybe the horror of today's testimony shows anal sex can't be viewed as some sort of 'natural' extension to vaginal sex and both can't be donated to at the same time?

Yeah, whoever wrote and acted that scene had NO experience of anal sex at all. You need lots and lots and LOTS of lube and he needs to go SLOW. You don't just go from vaginal to anal with no break in rhythm and let out a small "ow" while he carries on thrusting away! I have had good anal while experimenting with a very experienced man - just the one. It takes prep and care and more lube than you would ever think. Having done it myself, I truly shudder to think of the pain the women would have felt with no lube and the suddenness. That is a truly violent act and I hope there is some kind of aggravated rape charge for that.

Re Laura
I am afraid that if you watched her youtube video recorded 4 days ago, you would see that she remains resolute in her loyalty and belief in her husband.
She very clearly states in the youtube video that when people she knows personally express sympathy towards her about how difficult this trial must be for her, she corrects them and tells them that actually she is grateful for this court process because it is bringing her closer to grace, truth, the power of God and that she thanks the court process for this. She says that she and RB are reading bible verses in the taxi on the way to court. She talks for a few minutes about how the media who are reporting on this trial are evil, that they are dark forces who must be ignored. This was filmed 4 days ago after already hearing so much in court. Additionally, the video sees her laughing frequently with RB, smiling at him regularly, sharing jokes with him, complimenting him, telling him he's right when he speaks. It shows her telling RB his court outfits over the past week have made him look "wonderful" and that she's received compliments about how "smart" the two of them look in their outfits for court.
This is not a distressed woman, nor a woman who is finding the details from the victims distressing. This is not a woman who is second guessing her husband.
There is a moment where RB laughs and says in a joking voice "I've had a lot of things said about me in the past week hahaha" And Laura replies instantly "Yes!!" and laughs along with him.
Meanwhile we see him tell her she is wrong when she corrected him about a day of the week; he says "Sunday" she corrects him and says "Monday" he jumps on that and literally tells her "I didn't just say Sunday, you're wrong" when he HAD just said Sunday and she was RIGHT. He tells her she's got it wrong. She instantly admits she's wrong and apologises "sorry" to him immediately. But I watched it. She wasn't wrong. What she said was right. But he told her she said something wrong and she accepted it and apologised. We see him making a crude double entendre joke at her about her liking 'beef fingers' and doesn't let it drop. He makes her tell viewers that her beloved cat is taken from her ex-boyfriend. He makes a big deal about her pyjama top being low cut and revealing and tells her he likes view (of her breasts) and adopts some sort of fake comedy sleaze voice for this and her reply to this is "Oh you're so sweet". Like he's being a sleazeball to her right on camera, pointing out to viewers that her PJ top is slipping and revealing and that he likes it, and she responds by telling him he's sweet? I think she means he's sweet to let her know her top is exposing her, because she then re-adjusts it. But Jesus, she clearly believes he is sweet. We see him get highly irritated and cross all of a sudden when he realises he's rambling on about something he already rambled on about on last week's video, and berated her for not telling him he's repeating himself because it makes him look like he's senile and challenges her about why didn't she tell him he'd already said this last week.
She agrees with
Every
Thing
He
Says
Every single word. The entire video is of her saying to him:
"Mmmm" whilst nodding in agreement.
"You're right" whilst nodding in agreement.
"Mmmm hmmm" whilst nodding.
"Yesssss" whilst gazing at him.
Literally to everything he says.

Some people feel we shouldn't be watching the video because our views mean he's earning money from it. But to me it's worth watching for the amount it reveals about them both.
It's called Sunday Service with Laura & Russell if you're interested, 18th October.

I'm just watching a bit of it now. He is a true con-man. Pretending to be an uncommonly good person is one of the great smoke-screens used by psychopaths. This "I've found God" thing is absolutely textbook. And, if he had actually found God, a) he'd be doing it quietly and privately and b) he would atone for his sins by confessing and taking his punishment! Let's see how long the godliness lasts after the trial, whatever the outcome.

As for his wife, she's clearly brainwashed and I strongly suspect that she's in a coercively controlling relationship. I so hope that he goes to prison for a long time and that the fog clears for her while he's in there.

In this podcast, they come across as a really vile, odious pair. He's nothing but a jumped-up lowlife. In a previous era, he'd be selling snake oil. I always thought he was a guttersnipe. As for her, I know she's probably been brainwashed and everything, but supporting this rapist against these women is a really despicable look. I mean, does she think that six random strangers who don't know each other suddenly accused him of the same thing? Their stories all have a lot of similarities. I hope she wakes up one day. I bet her family can't stand him.

I always thought that "I'm so cool and edgy about sex" element was pretty dodgy in Fleabag, to be fair, and yes, precisely, that opening scene. I do think it's generational. See also "I May Destroy You" which is excellent in many ways, but I found myself saddened that in just a generation (or half a generation), understanding what sexual consent is and isn't was coming as a revelation to women not that much younger than me. And of course, they learn the hard way. (Although one key thing about this is that the young woman concerned in the Brand trial was absolute clear about her boundaries and what she'd consented to and what she hadn't. But she was STILL being dragged, quite disgustingly, imo, by Brand's defence lawyer, as if we were still back in 1973).

This shouldn't be difficult. The problem is that the boundaries have been (deliberately imo) blurred by the whole "we have to be soooo 'sex positive' and pro porn" thing, it was particularly prevalent again back in Brand's heyday, and I'm like, love, it's a con. We're allowed to like sex, but let's just think about who it benefits to have young women being told that ANY "no" is some kind of uncool prudishness. People like Brand (and others) take full advantage of that and it seems he got off on doing so. I'm gutted for that young woman. It's taken her sexual freedom and trust away and all because some wanker celeb is a manipulative rapey shite. Glad she had so many people backing her story up. AND pointing out to her that what he did there was rape.

I can see no reason at all for the jury not to find for her in this case, but then the comments I've seen from idiot, rape promoting men on social media suggest that huge numbers are still living in the dark ages and don't get the concept of consent AT ALL.

hihelenhi · 22/10/2026 23:43

Dontlletmedownbruce · 22/10/2026 22:04

I haven't followed closely but I have a question. There are those that say the women are out to make money etc. But I'm thinking he isn't really that wealthy surely? Is he not a former TV presenter that hasn't worked in years?

I really can't see how they'd be "making money" from this. Or would agree to be subjected to the ongoing trauma, the character assassination etc.

People who say this as if it's actually a serious consideration are absolutely clueless and ignorant about a)rape and b) the entire legal process.

hihelenhi · 22/10/2026 23:49

CrazyMidget · 22/10/2026 22:39

I've never taken much notice of him; he always left me cold. I was only vaguely aware of him until he and Ross pulled that despicable and intensely immature prank on Sachs. But now I am following the trial, and I've watched the first part of the Morgan interview, and the few minutes that I could bear of his "comedy". I noticed that it was relentlessly sexual, including sitting on an older man's lap in the audience and informing him that he had developed "a stiffy." 🤢

I find Brand profoundly sinister. He's a dangerous madman, imo. He's exceedingly immature, silly, childish, and those are his best points. He's dark, manipulative, and basically tickes all the boxes for the dark triad traits. He's playful in a mirthless, malevolent way. Really, really creepy.

The women's testimonies are utterly appalling. Those poor, poor things. I believe them 110 percent. The woman who experienced Brand just anally raping her with no lube and no warning....JFC, that is absolutely horrific.

He is vile and repugnant in every way and I sincerely hope that he goes down for the maximum amount of time possible.

Yes, and always was. I've got to say I remember the "eyes going black" thing from the documentary, and it is psychopathic. Beyond unsettling and creepy. And then you think of the "suddenness" that many have reported, that he at first seemed fine and then there's this kind of switch. It's terrifying.

They will. There are so, so many celebrity children who grow up and read all about the horrible things a parent did, plus they have the press writing about them all the time. They never asked to be famous and have horrible parent(s). I bet they'd trade their big houses and private schools and connections to just to be anonymously middle-class and have nice normal parents.

Absultely. It was positive from a prosecution point of view that the brutality and physical injuries of unconsented anal sex causes. I posted the cleaner thing as there may have been some modern cultural acceptance that anal was a bit of edgy non vanilla sex most people have secretly done. It's as if Fleabag is having is assuming every woman has experienced this....'God he's drunk and put it up the wrong hole....let's just lies here and get it over with'. Was this funny or may be a way to gently Schick an audience I don't know. Indeed open does show anal sex as non painful and obviously the actresses show pleasure not giving explicit consent to the anal act which is a problem with the modern internet.

I just think the prosecution showed a striking reality which was important given the consent to vaginal sex.

Exactly. I think the scene has aged badly and I wonder if Phoebe would have written or acted in the same scene in 2026? The wincing to the camera while making fake pleasure noises again maybe doesn't sit well in retrospect. Your right of you do enjoy anal sex preparation is key. It was shock humour really and men don't accidentally find the wrong hole and I found the wit thanking Phoebe for the bin sex a little off.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Another 'edgy' one whose comedy is aging badly.

To be clear: I'm talking about her comedy only. Obviously I'm not suggesting she's a sex offender.

The trouble is that a lot of young women feted Fleabag - her audience was largely female, after all.

Giving young men the message that anal sex is no big deal. It's funny, right? That's what young women think.

So if that young man is now on this jury...

I'm not blaming anybody for this. P W-B has no duty to anybody other than to do her job and be amusing.

Pointing out a chain of events is not assigning blame.

if he only gets convicted for that one, it’s surely a hefty sentence?

Whosthetabbynow · 23/10/2026 09:46

I think victim 5 could be the key to the entire case. If they find him guilty on that charge it’d be hard not to find him guilty in the other charges as it shows his propensity.

I agree and I wasn't criticising PWB and Fleabag was obviously hugely successful. I was just wondering if PWB would write such a scene now? Yes unfortunately it may have given the impression that anal sex was something that women just put up in the context of modern dating ... occasionally happens but if the man is happy?

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 23/10/2026 10:34

I have always found him to be a 'Rasputinesque' character - odious, repugnant, repulsive and totally repellant.
I cannot say whether it is the long, matted, greasy looking hair, the fact that he looks as though he needs a good wash down with an industrial power washer, the locquatious, verbose outpouring of verbal diarrhoea and word salad, spouting crap, designed to make himself look clever and witty and like God's gift to the world, the Machievellian, self serving, objectifying way he regards women as disposable commodities for his gratification and misuse, dressed up as "I can't help it, guv, it's my 'sex addiction' innit?"bollocks, rather than recognition of being an out and out predator. And now...? The Bible clutching, crucifix wearing 'born again' schtick, which is pallpably shallow and hollow - it makes me want to vomit!

Sadly there are still many out there, taken in by this vile charlatan - let us hope the jury are not amongst them - I, personally, would like to see him incarcerated for a very long time so that he is removed from public consciousness and is no longer a danger to the general public, especially women.

Glad to have had a rant and got that off my chest!
