This has really shocked me, awful reports coming out of France. I'm unsure as to exactly why the students are protesting and attacking teachers, and what the govt is going to do about it. Presumably this has been brewing for a while. Are people just angry in general and looking for excuses to riot?

Looks so close to societal breakdown from what I've seen online. Very scary and very sad.

Four riot police, all wearing helmets and two carrying large shields, can be seen surrounded by smoke during a protest in Brest on 1 October

Teenager's hand blown off during confrontation between France school protesters and riot police

The prefect of Pas-de-Calais says the 15-year-old's life is "not in danger" after the "very serious" incident.

One side of all this current situation which I suppose is quite interesting is that I've heard so many references to two French 1990's comedy shows that were before my time here:

Les Inconnus and Groland.

In the sense that people are saying that they weren't parody at all but either prophesy or could pass as straight documentary these days.

I've been watching all the old sketches on youtube to catch up.

@DebbieSavage "They should have seen this coming. Soon it will be our turn, and we should be trying to make amends with our youth right now."

Well tell that to this government of numpties who have made it practically impossible to employ any young people.
It now costs £25,000 a year to employ a young person full-time on the minimum wage. This is why pubs/coffee shops, florists and other small traders can't afford to take them on.
Friends of mine who are hairdressers or beauticians (who employ staff) tell me that their NI contributions have gone up 15% since Rachel Reeves' budget.

Powerful article here by an eyewitness to the riots, a British writer and church leader working in France. He mixes personal experience with a deep look at the reasons and groups behind the violence – including aspects of French culture and history that have added fuel to the flames.

It's gone viral in the past 24 hours, because lots of people are finding it a helpful explanation of what's going on.

Thanks Pottering.

Now I've had time to read it, it's an excellent, very well observed essay.

He mentions 4 strands of protesters: disgruntled students; hard leftists/anarchists; the Gaza omnicause; and disaffected youth.

I thought he missed the biggest issue here, white guilt. But he does mention it later and, quite rightly, relates it to the re-importation of certain aspects of French philosophy through an American lens (very telling indeed that the APAB graffiti is an English acronym) Which is, to my mind, spot on.
Another lovely gem arising from globalisation and the ubiquitousness of the internet...

The West is eating itself. And not any serious thought has been given to what will replace it.

Yeah, having a job, even on a shit wage gets our youngsters experience they can use, learn and grow from. If entry level jobs are gone, because businesses really can't afford the costs of employing them any more (only so much they can raise their prices in the current climate) then that's less part time jobs to support people through Uni, less first rungs on the ladder for our youngsters, and more youngsters sat at home out of work, their mental health deteriorating. Well done Labour, you really do know how to properly F things up don't you. Half of me thinks it must be deliberate to shaft small businesses, because surely people can't be this stupid?

Why don’t Labour reverse this disastrous decision? The data shows that businesses are hiring fewer staff and business owners say the NI hike is the reason. So why don’t Labour do something about it? It’s a disaster for our young people.

Because Labour cabinet are all Fabians. And current Labour policy seems inexplicably driven by dogma, ideology, and a combination of hatred and envy, and is not driven by evidence, what works, common sense, or what is actually in the long term best interests for the country and it's people. Labour much like the Tories, are puppets, subservient to their globalist masters.

Time for a General Election. Let the parties all lay out their new visions for the UK.

Ik, they should.

Ik, they should.

The more people on benefits and who are dependent on the state, the more people who will vote for parties that tax, borrow and haemorrhage money on benefits. Sadly, unless they fancy their chances while the right is divided and call an early election, the only thing that will do for them before 2029 is a reaconing with the bond markets.

At least the French get shit done. Their government tried to raise their pension age, they all said no and it didn’t happen. Over here we just accept the progressive enshitification of everything, roll over and say there’s nothing we can do it’s just life.

France is financially fucked, and now they’re burning things to the ground and costing the country millions that it can’t afford. Brilliant idea.

Thank fuck we aren’t still in the EU or we’d probably end up bailing them out. I feel sorry for the Germans.
