This has really shocked me, awful reports coming out of France. I'm unsure as to exactly why the students are protesting and attacking teachers, and what the govt is going to do about it. Presumably this has been brewing for a while. Are people just angry in general and looking for excuses to riot?

Looks so close to societal breakdown from what I've seen online. Very scary and very sad.

Four riot police, all wearing helmets and two carrying large shields, can be seen surrounded by smoke during a protest in Brest on 1 October

Teenager's hand blown off during confrontation between France school protesters and riot police

The prefect of Pas-de-Calais says the 15-year-old's life is "not in danger" after the "very serious" incident.

I agree - it looks terrifying.

French people love a good protest. It's in their DNA.

French people love going on a riot though, what is shocking though is these are children as young as 14.

they are protesting against cuts to education budgets and large class sizes apparently

Yep absolutely. Also, the rioters are mainly not students so they are not out on the streets protesting- they are there to brawl. It's the same twats that come out to fight as soon as there is a protest of any kind. The left wing extremists have encouraged them as well.

The majority have no idea what they are protesting against.

And they are doing that by setting light to teachers? Pull the other one.

Mixymaxymoxy · 05/10/2026 19:54

Class sizes of 30+ and not enough chairs / desks to sit at, so sitting on the floor.

Timetables that keep them in school from 08h00 to 17h30, 5 days a week.

Workload of studying 10-12 separate subjects in the final two years of high school (the govt tried to introduce some subject specialisation in the last reform but were unable to remove or reduce any of the core subjects so the workload has only got heavier as a result).

Absent teachers not replaced - local authority won’t even start looking for a replacement until the teacher has been absent for 3 weeks, even for final year exam classes. Teachers are often absent / not replaced for months. Richer parents can hire tutors to plug the gap, poorer ones try to teach themselves from the text book.

Sitting 4-hour final exams in rooms that are 35-40 degrees, no fans, no air conditioning, not even proper curtains in our school 🙄.

so yes they have a lot to complain about.

elperil · 05/10/2026 19:54

The usual Rent a Crowd appears to be infiltrating this. Any excuse for a riot. Apparently these are the most powerful demonstrations/riots since the student riots of 1968 which were the result of similar student grievances with opposition to the Vietnam War thrown in aswell.

BFM tv live is scary.

Mixymaxymoxy · 05/10/2026 19:56

There are many many legitimate protestors - and many others who are just there for a fight. The latter may well feel a lot of frustration at their lot in life, which is no justification. But the former have legitimate complaints. The teachers are coming out on strike in support of them tomorrow ✊

I saw a horrific clip online a few days ago from France - a gang of lads circled a female and sent off a mini flame thrower in her face. It said flamethrower & riots in the headline text but then this clip played out. Absolutely horrific for the poor female alone.

All the agricoles are getting their protests together as well.

She's more or less OK, I think. She's done a media interview which I've seen replicated across a few different news channels. She's an, "Auxiliaire de vie" or care worker.

I mean OK in the sense that she didn't suffer really bad burns and doesn't seem to disfigured.

She had a plaster on her neck and some kind of bandage on her wrist. I'm in no way medically trained but it must have only been through pretty swift intervention that she had such a good outcome. Maybe massive hydration and good burns care.

I don't know. I'm turning my brain inside out trying to fathom what exactly is going on.

Yes absolutely horrendous.

TadpolesInPool · 05/10/2026 20:24

Some students are protesting about the things mentioned above (no supply teachers, old, falling down buildings, rats etc) and many thugs are jumping on the bandwagon and setting fire to things/attacking people.

Ive seen many interviews with students and teachers where they say that those who are violent are NOT actually members of their school.

I guess it depends on your algorithm. I've seen lots of clips of young men escorting elderly people away from where police are letting off tear gas. Giving them scarfs to shield their faces, surrounding them to protect them, etc.

French schools have never really had supply or cover teachers, it's really not acceptable to leave pupils without teachers or even set work.
Most teachers are supportive of the action, and many are out there forming human shields between police and the students.

Yes, there has been infiltration from far left groups, but the students themselves have legitimate reasons to protest and are mostly doing so peacefully (and also joyfully).

TadpolesInPool · 05/10/2026 20:34

The lack of supply teachers is awful. Both my kids have had months without teachers, sometimes key subjects like maths and French.

Luckily there's nothing happening at my son's high school.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/10/2026 21:28

Yeah they’re just being French 🤷‍♀️

just like the yellow vest protests.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 05/10/2026 21:36

Some people who live on our street have their English daughter, her French husband and their 2 kids staying at the moment, they were living here in the uk and went to France for his job last year but they have returned to the uk a couple of weeks ago, the kids are in school here same primary as mine but younger. They said it’s been horrific and couldn’t wait to get back to the UK but for many it’s not an option.

The fact that you have starred the word Muslim makes me know what sort of media you read and racist mindset you follow. Espèce d'abruti raciste
