What on earth is happening in France?

This has really shocked me, awful reports coming out of France. I'm unsure as to exactly why the students are protesting and attacking teachers, and what the govt is going to do about it. Presumably this has been brewing for a while. Are people just angry in general and looking for excuses to riot?

Looks so close to societal breakdown from what I've seen online. Very scary and very sad.

Four riot police, all wearing helmets and two carrying large shields, can be seen surrounded by smoke during a protest in Brest on 1 October

Teenager's hand blown off during confrontation between France school protesters and riot police

The prefect of Pas-de-Calais says the 15-year-old's life is "not in danger" after the "very serious" incident.

What exactly is racist about telling the truth?

Firstly, it's not the truth. Secondly, apart from baguettes, garlic, stripey tops and a disdain for people speaking French badly, if, (and that has not been shown anywhere apart from right wing bollock media) it is second/third generation people in france, rioting, surely there is no better indication that they have absorbed french culture fully. A country that has had riots for well over a thousand years and that did a far better job than we did of getting rid of their monarchy.

Yet if you watched the actual footage on twitter (not the BBC version selectively chosen and cut to suit their pro-migrant agenda) then you would see that it is indeed the truth.

Why do you attempt to deny what could easily be seen with your own eyes, if you chose to look?

And thanks for calling me a racist moron (in French). But can I point out to you that 'religion' is a totally different thing to 'race'.

Oh Twitter the beacon of reliable coverage. Owned by a racist, xenophobe and religious bigot. I really feel that is a good place to "research".

So you are dismissing the truth based purely on the source? This is known as a Genetic Fallacy.

Genetic Fallacy happens when a person rejects a fact, statistic, or argument simply because it originates from a right-wing, conservative, or mainstream corporate source they dislike.

The error manifests because instead of evaluating the validity of the data or message itself, the individual focuses entirely on the political identity of the source.

Class sizes of 30+ and not enough chairs / desks to sit at, so sitting on the floor.

Timetables that keep them in school from 08h00 to 17h30, 5 days a week.

Workload of studying 10-12 separate subjects in the final two years of high school (the govt tried to introduce some subject specialisation in the last reform but were unable to remove or reduce any of the core subjects so the workload has only got heavier as a result).

Absent teachers not replaced - local authority won’t even start looking for a replacement until the teacher has been absent for 3 weeks, even for final year exam classes. Teachers are often absent / not replaced for months. Richer parents can hire tutors to plug the gap, poorer ones try to teach themselves from the text book.

Sitting 4-hour final exams in rooms that are 35-40 degrees, no fans, no air conditioning, not even proper curtains in our school 🙄.

so yes they have a lot to complain about.

Is that 10-12 subjects at age 16/18 or more like our gcse 14-16?

I guess it depends on your algorithm. I've seen lots of clips of young men escorting elderly people away from where police are letting off tear gas. Giving them scarfs to shield their faces, surrounding them to protect them, etc.

French schools have never really had supply or cover teachers, it's really not acceptable to leave pupils without teachers or even set work.
Most teachers are supportive of the action, and many are out there forming human shields between police and the students.

Yes, there has been infiltration from far left groups, but the students themselves have legitimate reasons to protest and are mostly doing so peacefully (and also joyfully).

If they don’t have supply teachers, what do you mean it’s not acceptable to leave them without a teacher?
Who goes in if the teacher is ill?

Yet you can't answer in good faith a single question posed to you? You can't refute a single bit of what I have posted with evidence or reasoning. And instead you resort to calling people racists and morons like a child on a school playground.

These are not the signs that your argument has any merit. And these are not the views of someone who is able to think and assess a situation rationally. They are the views of a bigot blinded by their own ideology.

So in the absence of any sensible contrary evidence from you. I'll say again that the vast majority of the youths rioting in France are 2nd and 3rd generation Muslim youths who have not integrated sufficiently, and who appear to hold values vastly contrary to, and incompatible with those values we expect here in the West.

And I'll say again, that Islam is a religion. To criticise Islam, or it's followers (Muslims), in not in any way racist, since Islam is not considered a race. And as far as I am aware we don't (yet) have blasphemy laws in the UK.

You haven't provided one piece of evidence for your (now deleted by MN post). Apart from telling us to "look on twitter".

Not really that shocking when you consider people and their children were out protesting after Southport.

They are not taught, and often not set work. It's not acceptable. Pupils can be left for very long periods of time without being taught a particular subject if the teacher is off.

Yeah they’re just being French 🤷‍♀️

just like the yellow vest protests.

Yup, the famous "Gilets jaunes" protests in 2018, when Paris was burning all down the Champs Elyses most weekends and Macron's goons were out cracking the heads of pensioners.
That just seems like the Gaulish way - even Julius Caesar wrote in his "Gallic Wars" that the Gauls were uncivilised and that was in 50-51 BC.
Then you had the French farmers driving their slurry vehicles into Paris and covering as many buildings as they could in $h!£ in 2020.
C'est la vie...

These sound like terrible problems but I don’t see how rioting on the streets and attacking teachers would help. Teachers are stuck in the system too and have very little influence over education policy or funding. I’m sure teacher unions are strong in France but individual teachers are not responsible for funding cuts or overcrowded classrooms.

This isn’t O level standard. In the last year of school they are doing the equivalent of 2 A levels plus:
Philosophy (final year)
History-geography
General science
Two foreign languages
citizenship
sports / PE
Core maths (if they aren’t taking Speciality maths)
1-2 options - music, Latin / Greek art.

No one goes in, there’s no expectation of cover in secondary schools. Younger students go to ‘permanence’ a kind of study hall where they are supervised (loosely) by non teaching staff. Older students can do this too, or they can leave school.

Burning down schools and assaulting teachers won’t help the situation. This looks like Antifa style thuggery. Kids and masked individuals filming attacks on people.

Bbc made it seem like the kids are cross they have a lack of resources but the footage shows thuggery. Why such poor journalism? Kids are filming the assaults plenty of footage available.

Teachers doused in petrol, bus and firetrucks set on fire. Schools burnt down. A school set on fire with children inside.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/france-schools-protest-paris-riots-b3060383.html

This source may be more acceptable but I agree with a previous poster that SM showed the scale of the issue and had my relative been a teacher in France I would have begged them to stay home after watching it escalate via SM. Teachers lives were at risk and it won’t help the ‘kids’ (Antifa style rioters) supposed complaints when teachers resign/emigrate. I’d certainly not return to a school in those areas. Burning teachers is never acceptable. If the kids want staff I’m not sure this method will help attract top quality teachers to schools.

I don’t understand the reluctance to believe all footage on SM. Yes some is bullshit but so is some journalism. I would have kept my children at home if I lived in France due to SM footage. It was clear it was escalating long before the bbc etc bothered to report on how dangerous it was.

Hundreds of schools closed and dozens of teachers attacked as French riots escalate

Around 2,000 people have been arrested as buildings are torched and police officer beaten in growing protests against school conditions

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 06/10/2026 04:03

How do you know?

I have family in France. Many middle class lycéens know what they are protesting about and go about it in a peaceful way. More lycéens don't care but see it as an opportunity to protest in general and have a day off school. And then we got the violent rioters; some of them in school, many not even in the education system but just want to brawl.

As for the posters arguing about it being mostly second and third generations of immigrants being rioters- that's true. But one has also to consider the socioeconomic demography where those same people are among the poorest and have a constant feeling of rejection and no sense of belonging in society. You don't see any immigrants rioting- just the second and third generation who feel the social injustices. Not excusing their behaviour obviously and it has nothing to do with the official vindications of the protesters.
