I hear he has been suspended for 3 months. Did he really think he could pass other people's work off as his own? Did the fame just go to his head?

I used to like him on Richard and Judy. He was really comforting...

beeny · 20/06/2008 22:50

I agree thought he was quite good

TotalChaos · 20/06/2008 22:52

surprised he's been suspended tbh, not that plagiarism is good, but it's not as if he's harmed any patients by doing so is it?

he's a v nice man

but - the plagiarism brought his profession and therefore his role, into dispute

notnowbernard · 20/06/2008 22:53

Celebrity Psychiatrist

edam · 20/06/2008 22:54

Well, he deserves a three month suspension just for the horrible mis-use of the word 'myself' instead of 'me' in his statement. In my pedantic opinion.

His effrontery is quite something, isn't it?

Weegiemum · 20/06/2008 22:55

I always liked him but think he might have got a bit carried away with his own self-importance after a while.

But it is fraudulent to pass others work off as your own, and it's not as if he doesn't know that, and one instance he changed just one word so can't even balme a cutting and pasting error. 3 months pretty mild imo.

Tortington · 20/06/2008 22:56

aparently it said on the news ( havenlt read link soz) that the case came to light because of the church of scientologists who don't believe in phychology

this doesn't negate his wrong doing o corse - just adds a nice litle twist

Carmenere · 20/06/2008 22:56

Agree with bundle, they were right to suspend him, he fucked up massively and to do that he can't be functioning properly and he did bring his profession into disrepute

clutteredup · 20/06/2008 22:57

As anyone in further education would know plagiarism is an absolute no no.As a mere undergraduate or post graduate you can be removed from the university and prevented from studying even if it was for personal experience. he was doing it for financial gain in a published book - he has fame and no doubt at least a modest fortune- is this not just bare greed and arrogance?

AitchNunsnet · 20/06/2008 22:57

lol is that right? 'i'd have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those pesky scientologists...'

notnowbernard · 20/06/2008 22:58

He is also a consultant psychiatrist at Maudsley NHS Trust. So IMO should be concentrating his efforts on clinical practice, not writing coffee-table pop psychology books

Monkeytrousers · 20/06/2008 22:58

it's only three months, he's not been struck off or anything. don't think this is a big deal

WilfSell · 20/06/2008 22:59

He was an arse anyway, plagiarism or not. Never heard him say anything on telly I couldn't have made up or copied thought of myself.

edam · 20/06/2008 23:00

I think it is a big deal for such a high profile and well-respected clinician to be suspended. And he deserves it.

pointydog · 20/06/2008 23:09

agree with will. He was a Nice Bloke who came out with sensible but not very scientific stuff

bundle · 20/06/2008 23:09

there was a lot of talk over who had persisted in complaining about him (a number of times) but i hadn't heard it was scientologists, but other (disgruntled) people

I've never heard anything negative re: Raj's clinical work, I think he's pretty well regarded but this business obv will affect how people (both his peers and patients) think about him

AitchNunsnet · 20/06/2008 23:09

i thought he had about 15 degrees... Judy said so.

bundle · 20/06/2008 23:10

i think in other settings (ie not This Morning) he's come out with some pretty scientific stuff (R4, World Service Radio)

notnowbernard · 20/06/2008 23:10

Sitting in on a phone-in with Rich n Jude has never been particularly taxing, has it?

TheFallenMadonna · 20/06/2008 23:10

On PM they interviewed one of the people he plagiarised and it was brought to his attention by someone from the Sunday Times I think.

He does deserve to be suspended of course.

But he isn't being suspended for anything to do with his clinical practice.
