Why aren't we discussing the kids running riot in London and Birmingham off the back of a TikTok trend? [title edited by MNHQ at user's request]

If there’s already a thread I couldn’t see it.

Perhaps the police should review the youths’ Twitter accounts? I’m sure at least one of them will have used some hurty words and some point, meaning that the police can at least arrest and imprison them for something?

It’s fucking awful. We had a group of balaclava wearing teens around our local school’s the other week, apparently another TikTok trend.

@MissMarplesNiece I couldn’t agree more.

Funny how the wests version of Tik Tok is not the same as Chinas?

SoloSofa24 · 01/04/2026 19:14

This reminds me of the national moral panic over mods and rockers fighting in seaside towns back in the 1950s/60s - they would all be in their 80s now, and no doubt tutting over the youth of today. In the 1970s and 80s it was skinheads and football hooligans.
Tiktok does spread stupid stuff, but gangs of teenagers causing trouble is not exactly a new phenomenon.

Social media like tik tok needs to be banned.

Youth cults of the past concetrated on each other generally ,I was a Mod 79 revival and then Northern soul niters.
I don't recall the general public being pulled in to our Mod v Biker rucksack.

“Fix (narrow) the doors and man the tills”
I like it @rosycheex

EmeraldRoulette · 01/04/2026 19:49

Well, yes, of course

My life was similar before lockdown. It wasn't something you saw every time you were out. I would've left London much faster if it was!

someone mentioned areas where teens can go wild. I wouldn't see that as a positive - but the current crop like populated areas to cause trouble. And of course, if there's a dare of shoplifting because they know there's no consequences for that... they're going to congregate near shops.

I don't know what other countries are having these problems. I would be interested to know what happens in other countries.

I lived in central London during the 2011 riots. Lots of kids involved, lots of looting. Sorry to ask but...where are the parents?

In the example you've given, the Parents were out looting!

My cousin actually overheard that conversation on a train from Croydon where she unfortunately had to work.

Literally a mother talking about what she had managed to nick and her son had managed to nick.

In general, I think their parents are probably just smoking weed at home or generally being useless.

rosycheex · 01/04/2026 18:34

As far as I’m aware shoplifters (not the gangs) and kids get no jailing or anything nowadays - maybe community work but I’ve never seen criminals doing anything like that.
So how many hours should a police person put towards collecting interviews, eyewitness statements, watching hours of cctv for a pointless court case?

They shouldn't be pointless court cases. People shouldn't be getting away with lower level crimes.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/04/2026 20:00

MaturingCheeseball · 01/04/2026 18:58

The girls who were caught have been charged with shoplifting. They weren’t just hanging around.

Do people really think it’s a good idea to give 16-year-olds the vote? Because you can’t say, Oh, they’re only kids with no youth clubs one minute and then the next believe they would make a decent voting decision.

I think it's a terrible idea.

Riapia · 01/04/2026 20:22

BridgetJonesV2 · 01/04/2026 11:32

It's because there are no consequences for committing crimes anymore. Prisons need to be made into tough hellholes that no one ever wants to get sent back to - and no contact with the outside world/relatives while they're in there. Less holiday camp complete with drugs, mobiles and gaming consoles - more Alcatraz.

And yet people, during the Covid lockdown, found it unbearable to be confined in their own comfortable homes.

TowerRaven · 01/04/2026 20:22

Maybe if they were able to get Saturday jobs in the shops they wouldn't trash them? Sense of ownership/pride.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/04/2026 20:30

i was thinking that I was busy working when I was a teen but of course laws prevent that now.

You surely meant to say TikTok? 😉

Is this happening in other countries or is just UK youth? If so, what's happening in our society?

I think the internet feeds the narrative that everything is fucked and it’s a race to the bottom. Once you start believing that nothing is salvageable you just get on with destroying it instead. Statues thrown into the rivers, constant protests no respect for authority…

I mean

This isnt new in society - i remember schools meeting up to fight eachother when I was young

And the happy slapping

Teenagers are cruel little beings, they scare the shit out of me

"..Gone to fight the next-door school
E'vry term, that is the rule..."

EmeraldRoulette · 01/04/2026 21:14

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast it's obviously very personal but I would've thought that the people who defend throwing statues into rivers are exactly the same people who think behaviour this is nothing to worry about. Or they would accuse us of just looking at social media instead of having actual experience.

Which of course we'd have to phrase them as "please don't deny my lived experience" because that's the kind of phrase they understand.

JustSawJohnny · 01/04/2026 22:33

Time for the government to step in and threaten TikTok with an outright ban in the UK if their platform is used to stir up dumb shit like this.

A few weeks ago it was the red Vs blue school team fighting and now this.

This IS kids being kids, though.

All this talk of 'societal breakdown' and 'chaos' is pure hyperbole.

Exactly the kind of thing touted on GB News.

Do not kid yourselves that this country will be a crime free haven of joy under a Reform government. Their entire manifesto is about cutting public services even further.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/04/2026 22:41

@JustSawJohnny they'll just use Discord etc

any platform can be used for stuff like this
Snapchat etc

And yet it hasn't.

It's always TikTok.

Whatever platform, there should be sanctions.

Time for parents to start removing apps, too!

BeMellowAquaSquid · 01/04/2026 23:11

Where are the parents? Where’s the discipline in the home? Parents need to start being charged with joint enterprise if their feral offspring are caught doing this sort of thing.

I agree, there's no parenting going on for these types

But you'll literally be banning every means of communication, which is just not possible

As posters have mentioned, the school fights were going on in the 80s and 90s

The main difference seems to be that this lot actually want it to cause maximum disruption to the public and to be filmed - hence what weve got going on on buses etc

When I were a lass, it was normally arranged for some obscure hiding place

I really don't care if they kick the shit out of each other

There should be a nice holding pen for the police to put them in overnight

But yes, banning all means of communication for everybody doesn't seem like a solution

Government and the judiciary need a top down solution with actual punishments but I think we've gone too far with being a society that allows this

It's going to take someone to do something really shocking to get it under control

No.

England and Wales don't make the mistake of free bus travel for under 22 that we've got in Scotland.
The little bastards go on tour causing mayhem and abuse passengers and staff alike till they reach their destination and indulge in anti social behaviour.
A bus driver in Elgin depot died after being punched by a 15 year old.

DaisyChain505 · 02/04/2026 05:40

Where are the parents?

Why do these kids have smart phones, why do these kids have tik tok, why are these kids out roaming the streets.

Why aren’t the parents parenting their children?
