Has anyone else seen the cctv footage from this murder? I have come across it today on social media and I can not get that poor girl out of my mind, it's one of the most heart breaking things I've seen.
Why did no- one help sooner? Bystander effect? Shock? Scared themselves?
I feel so angry/ shocked/ heartbroken about it.

Honestly I can't stop thinking about her, RIP Iryna this shouldn't of happened to you 💔

I've seen stills and that's bad enough I don't think I could watch the video. It's just too awful.

Wishing14 · 10/09/2025 17:52

This is city living. Terrifying. People are meant to live in small communities where we know people, that’s what I believe. I cannot believe no one helped…. Well I can which is even sadder. Poor, poor girl.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 10/09/2025 17:56

Absolutely horrifying. The stills are more than enough. Poor Iryna, escaping a war torn country so she can live in peace and safety and being met with that. RIP.

Berlinlover · 10/09/2025 18:04

I’ve also seen the video, it’s heartbreaking. I took the subway in Chicago two years ago and it was a terrifying experience. I won’t say any more as I would be branded a racist.

I have never thought of this before.
Really good point!

I can't help but think if the races had been the other way round there would be an uproar?

I agree with you.

Latenightreader · 10/09/2025 19:48

It sounds like there were only two minutes between the attack and the train arriving at the station where he was caught, so everyone was probably still in shock, and terrified.

I haven't watched the whole video, just the first minute showing her sitting on the train with him behind. No one else is visible, maybe too far to intervene? The account I read wasn't clear, how were the police alerted to arrest him, did someone in the carriage phone them?

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 10/09/2025 21:28

I haven’t watched the video but have read an account on what happened - in wider stills there are several other people on the carriage who are close enough to intervene, one man went after the attacker and called for him to be stopped, and when Iryna Zarutska collapsed several people went to her aid, including another man who removed his shirt to try and stop her bleeding.
I don’t think the judging some corners of the internet are meting out on the other inhabitants of the carriage is fair. Everybody likes to think they would fight, but most of us have no idea what they would do if faced with an armed attacker who had just proven they were willing to be violent- they must have been petrified.

Thornyrose7 · 11/09/2025 05:43

I also saw the video as it is all over social media..It is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen.,Please think carefully before watching it as it is appalling. Poor Iryna, just trying to live her life.
The man who did it should never be free.

LizzyEm · 11/09/2025 07:14

I think it's hard to say why did no one do anything. She didn't make any noise and the attack was quick and contained. If you were looking the other way out the window, you probably wouldn't realise anything had happened until he was walking away.

I think most of the other passengers didn't realise something was wrong until they saw the blood running/pooling all over the floor. Until that point, the way she collapsed could have looked like she was on drugs or something. Plus she was behind the barrier board.

After that, I suppose people didn't want to confront the attacker because he had a big knife, they didn't want to get attacked, or prosecuted for intervening.

How is there NOT an uproar? It's been widely reported, videos are circulating everywhere and people are donating money to paint murals of her across the city with Musk donating $1 million.

But there is an uproar? The reaction to this has been massive.

At least 3 weeks after it happened - because people on the internet kept pushing. Why wasn't there immediate uproar from the MSM?

YetiRosetti · 11/09/2025 07:26

It’s heartbreaking. I’ve no idea if she could have been saved if someone had gone to her aid - i suspect not but at least she wouldn’t have been frightened and alone in her last moments.

Phase42 · 11/09/2025 07:28

I only heard about this yesterday too....even though it happened on August 22nd. I watched the video - heartbreaking, terrifying. That poor girl.

This man has a long criminal history and shouldn't have been out at all...it's a terrifying world we live in.

I see that Trump is calling for the death penalty for him - it should never be the Presidents place to say anything like that.

Untailored · 11/09/2025 07:34

I don’t think it was immediately clear to the people around what had happened. It was so fast.

Horrifying for the poor girl.

There were people sitting across the aisle from her. After she fell to the floor (which was a little bit after the actual attack) no one immediately went to help her, but I’ve seen a still where a man is helping her so must have gone after the end of the video I saw.

Realistically, if I’m on a train and there’s someone with a knife, I am shrinking down in my seat and hoping their attention doesn’t fall on me. As much as I’d like to say I’d be brave and would have leapt up immediately administering first aid while screaming for someone to grab the guy, I’d probably be completely frozen in fear and unable to move.

Valhalla17 · 11/09/2025 07:38

I don't even think Iryna herself realised what had actually happened. It happened very fast and she was looking up at him in confusion and shock.

The passengers didn't have long to register what had happened either...they may have been shocked and scared too. Nobody knows how they would react in such a situation. Others came to help Iryna once they realised what had happened, but she bled out quickly.

There has definitely been uproar....

I don’t think she realised. Maybe that’s a blessing? I saw the video footage after he has stabbed her. I hadn’t heard of the case, was just scrolling through X, and what I ‘saw’ was a young woman cowering in her seat and crying as if the man sitting behind her had verbally threatened her. He then gets up and walks off. I honestly didn’t think she’d been stabbed. From what I’ve read, when it’s a surprise attack, the victim doesn’t always realise and thinks they’ve been hit or punched. I think that’s what happened here. She’s not putting her hand to the wound, she’s putting her face in her hands and crying.

As for the reaction of the people sitting around her, it happened so quickly. He’s sitting behind her (not running up to her waving a knife), stabs her with a pen knife and storms off. The people around her are looking out the window, at their phones, possibly have ear pods in, they look up at him as he storms off and then over at her crying, but I don’t think they realise in the moment exactly what has happened. I understand she then collapses to the floor about 15 seconds later and people react, but the footage I saw doesn’t show that far. It’s just absolutely awful and my heart breaks for her.

I also saw the video. After he stabs her the other people in that section of the carriage get up and move away. By the time she collapsed after about 20 seconds, she's alone. Nobody comes over. I gather it was 2 minutes later that a man gets on the train, spots her and goes to help.

XenoBitch · 11/09/2025 21:09

I have saw the story about it, but I am not going to click on video link to someone living their last moments.
All the comments on this are about how no one did anything yet they are watching the video from the safety of their homes.

Offloadontome · 11/09/2025 21:27

I've seen the full actual video on tik tok. I think it's possible both the girl and the bystanders maybe don't realise she's been stabbed at first - it's so quick and could have easily missed what happened if you weren't looking that way. However, she very quickly loses consciousness and falls off the chair onto the floor. There's a huge pool of blood on the chair, and the woman in the red top opposite her literally keeps looking back at her, the people behind all stand up to look, and one man walks forwards to see her on the floor - but none of them go to her or do anything. The red top woman then walks away - and it's a full 1 minute 10 seconds after she is literally laid there on the floor unconscious that a guy from further down train runs over to help.
THEN - the guy that got up for a better look just watches him for a while, then sits down and gets his phone out!!!
I genuinely can't imagine what was running through these people's heads.
The only other consideration is where was the guy that did it when all this happened? Was he still in the carriage? It looked a bit like red top woman was looking at something ahead. I don't know if they were scared to go to her aid if he was still there for fear of being attacked themselves.
But.
Even if they had no idea she was stabbed or it looked like she was collapsing on drugs - surely you'd rush over immediately if you'd just seen someone collapse onto the floor unconscious?

The poor, poor girl.
I won't link the video, but with a few tik tok searches you can find the full video of the actual train footage right until several people are then helping, when it's obviously too late.

Everyone believes they know what they would do in an emergency. They all believe they would do better. Almost everyone is wrong. We believe in the myth of the rational actor. In real life emergencies, we are all in our rat brain, not thinking logically and consciously.

I’ve been in a few situations with violent people, fires, medical emergencies. Most people are useless. I’m not but that’s mainly because I’m fairly useless IRL with my ADHD. Us ADHDers do better in emergencies because of poor risk assessment and hyperfocus on the problems. Not useful IRL, great in emergencies.

I’ve watched people do nothing, do something utterly stupid, freeze, freak out, run, go almost catatonic, shake and throw up. You’d be amazed. In one emergency, the only person helping was a young man with an extensive criminal past. He was the one who was used to fear and emergency, so didn’t freeze.

Please be kind and considerate to the people around the poor victim. They are victims in their own way too. Traumatised and forever linked to this tragedy.

CommonAsMucklowe · 12/09/2025 18:18

I've seen the whole video and it was absolutely shocking. That poor girl died alone though I understand onlookers where probably scared for their own lives. He's since said she was 'reading his mind'.
