This is so heartbreaking, he was only 28.

Just stop it.
Some people die at 30mph, some are fine driving at over 100mph.

How many luxury cars these days aren't capable of over 100mph? Not many if any at all!

You're derailing this thread when people are genuinely sad about an awful accident, start your own one demonising fast cars if that's all you're here for.

TokyoSushi · 03/07/2025 12:40

Absolutely horrendous news, I think I'll go up to Anfield with some flowers later. YNWA

Ted27 · 03/07/2025 12:49

@Lafufufu

I'm sure LFC will ensure that his family are looked after, just as they did when Diaz' father was kidnapped.
The club have issued a very brief statement as I imagine they are focusing efforts on doing what they can for the family and ensuring the players and staff are being supported

I'm so bloody sad about this. Just over a month ago I watched him at the trophy parade and he was so full of life, singing along to his song with all the fans.
He was only married ten days ago, I can't even bear to think about how his wife feels, or his parents losing two sons in such a horrific way.
God, it's terrifying to think how quickly life can turn, I know it sounds trite but it's really made me think about how we need to seize whatever happiness we can because you never know the bloody minute.

A tyre burst and the car burst into flames. What lesson can be learnt from that.

Jumping to conclusions based on the type of car is ignorant at best. A little bit of knowledge can be dangerous and this is an awful post. Hang your head In shame.

Lafufufu · 03/07/2025 12:27

Unpopular opinion(?)
my initial thought was its sad/tragic but thank fuck she married him... they have 3 kids and hes an international footballer so presumably she isnt working FT in an office or anything...

Depending on inlaw relations she could have been in a terrible financial position if it had happened 10 days before the wedding

I feel for his family. Especially the wife and children....

Edited

I don’t think that’s an unreasonable observation, @Lafufufu. While I believe the Club and the Jota family will look after Rute and the children, the fact that they were married properly secures the situation legally for the children and their mother.

I’ve found over the decades that death - especially sudden death - is made much less difficult to navigate if everyone has a legal roadmap to follow.

Such a tragedy for all involved.

It’s a sad day in Liverpool today… RIP Diogo and Andre

I've started a new thread for discussions about fast cars - this is not the right thread for that.
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5366629-new-thread-about-fast-cars-so-the-diogo-jota-rip-one-doesnt-get-further-derailed

Well do also include that speeding hasn’t been identified as an issue and that the cause of the accident was a tyre blow and the car bursting into flames. So no issue with the car then. Short thread.

Craftysue · 03/07/2025 13:17

Not a Liverpool fan but I'm really saddened by this news. Great player who I enjoyed watching ( unless he was playing against my team) Desperately sad for his family and friends - poor parents to lose two sons
RIP Diogo

imsureineverdo · 03/07/2025 13:20

Heartbreaking. Forever a Champion, YNWA Diogo.

ChessorBuckaroo · 03/07/2025 13:22

Devastating. So young.

Seen so many images of Jota with the Premier League trophy at Anfield from just six weeks ago (and as a LFC fan that was a great moment at the time), but the image that hits most is of Jota and his wife on their wedding day two weeks ago along with their kids. So so happy. Also seeing another image of the two of them together as teenagers from 2012. Heartbreaking.

And the brother Andre dying alongside him. Your heart goes out to the whole family.

Kimwestonhelpless · 03/07/2025 13:48

Picture of the burnt out car ,no need highly insensitive.

Cherrypies · 03/07/2025 13:52

I am a Liverpool fan, when I see this, this morning, was shocked, and very sad. A very talented player, and a great loss to the team, but what really matters, is his wife and kids, and the rest of his and his brothers family.
People who have made comments other than about sadness at this awful loss, should be utterly ashamed.
They show who you really are, bitter and twisted.

Yeah this. ^ I won't be going onto this totally not needed thread.

Zov · 03/07/2025 14:00

How sad that his brother died too. 😢

You've misunderstood me, or I've worded it badly.

There were PPs (not me) using this thread to preach about the dangers of fast cars, etc and I've started the new thread if they want to continue the discussion there as this is a thread for mourning, not gloating.
As stated, we have no idea of the mechanism of the tragic accident, so using a young man's death to make smug comments about speeding felt so wrong to me, which is why I started a new thread for them to continue that conversation and move them away from here.

Spookywoods · 03/07/2025 14:13

Absolutely bloody heartbreaking. How will his parents ever recover from loosing both their sons in such a tragic way ! Every parents worse nightmare, truly devastating 😥

He was a really lovely player and seemed like a sweet, unpretentious man. He’d achieved so much this year, professionally and personally. I was excited to see what was next for him. Such a terrible loss.

fairydust11 · 03/07/2025 14:32

Heartbreaking. Forever a Champion, YNWA Diogo.

He was a champion for us at Wolves as well. He was such a brilliant player and so Popular with fans and his Team mates. I feel genuinely sad about this tragedy.

this was the Wolves statement:

“We are heartbroken.

Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.

Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre.

You will be truly missed, and always remembered.”
