Let me get out my tiny violin. Just because she's sorry now doesn't change the fact she's a racist who incited violence

is there evidence that any of the physical offenders acted because of the tweet?

So it's OK to break the law if no one gets hurt ?

Who has said it's ok to break the law?

@Dreambouse

"added that in the three-and-a-half hours between Connolly publishing and deleting the post, it was “widely read”, having been viewed “310,000 times with 940 reposts, 58 quotes and 113 bookmarks”."

I think the dissemination bit is what I struggle with as presumably she had no idea of the traction it would get?

Exactly. Lucy Connolly is not Tommy Robinson, she’s not a danger to the public, it was a first offence. It is ridiculous that she is spending three years in prison.

Which would only lead to questions about recklessness then. And that is a whole other rabbit hole to go down.

footpath · 20/05/2025 17:47

@SerendipityJane are you saying there wouldn't have been any thugs attacking police or immigrants if there wasn't a tweet? Personally I think it's unlikely.

But the offence she pled guilty to meant that she was always going to serve time. She knew that.

I have little sympathy. Her previous tweets show the sort of person she is.

You do not require evidence that someone acted on incitement. If you advocate murder, it does not require someone to carry out the murder to make what you did illegal.

She had 10k followers, was probably 'known' in her community as her husband is/was a councillor and she tweeted awful stuff regularly. This wasn't a one off out of character tweet on a private account with just friends and family tweeting. She only deleted it as she was worried about getting in trouble according to her messages afterwards. She's being painted as a wholesome wife and mother who worked as a childminder but really it seems like shes a nasty piece of work who knew full well what she was doing.

@RoseAndGeranium I agree with you re the awareness of committing an offence. i've seen so much offensive stuff on social media, there is definitely mixed messages. Haven't people on MNs expressed that they wished or hoped someone would take out Putin or Trump?

Regarding expressing taking out Trump or Putin - 99.9% of us on MN would in no way be capable of taking out either of them, but there are many who could very easily set fire to a local hotel that housed asylum seekers.

Plus there are currently no Putin or Trump related riots happening in the UK.

footpath · 20/05/2025 17:58

I'm not arguing that she isn't a horrible person & that she didn't deserve punishment. She is & does, I just think the sentence is excessive particularly when violent offenders and sex attackers are getting released early to ease overcrowding.

Ultimately when you gamble with the law, you can lose.

Life's not fair. Weather to follow.

Do you think an exception should have been made for her? Her sentence was in keeping with the crime she pled guilty to.

Is that relevant though? Surely if something is illegal it's illegal?

Absolutely, this is what we are discussing isn't it? 😆

RoseAndGeranium · 20/05/2025 18:01

Curious if anyone knows what sort of sentences have been handed down relating to the riots in Harehills about the attempt to take children into the custody of social services?

footpath · 20/05/2025 18:02

Extenuating circumstances are often used when sentences are handed down. I don't think a shorter sentence would have made her an exceptional case.

So is it only illegal if there is a riot?

She was given a shorter sentence.

For the main offenders - five / six years. I think the lowest sentence was young offender who got 20 months. 25 people were jailed.

footpath · 20/05/2025 18:09

But I have already said I think the sentence was harsh so whilst 3 years is shorter than 7 yrs I don't think it's a short.

She got 31 months and will only serve 40% of the time. That's pretty lenient for inciting arson and murder.

Is how many followers you have relevant in law?

Or how many read something, say on here or other site

Utterly reprehensible but the sentence is still excessive.. paedophiles .. domestic abusers .. road killers have got less jail time.

Agree Will be interesting to see what the coppers who tasered the old man in the care home get
