So it is "justice".......or is this just The Sun trying to sell more papers??

Steven Bigby the man stabbed to death in Oxford Street the other day.

compared to the BBC report

so was it "justice" - or is the sun trying to sell more papers?

No, he was just on bail, but emphasising that doesn't make quite such a good story and whatever else it was, it certainly wasn't "justice" by any measure I know of (unless you're a believer in a weird karmic justice).

I clicked on the link because I am bored and avoiding work, I expected to be indignant about the sun revealing accusations against a murder victim, but bloody hell.

How the hell did he get granted bail for that? Unbelievably horrific attack on a 16 year old girl, when he was already on trial for GBH in a separate attack?

How did that gang rape not make the news?

"They doused her with skin-burning caustic soda in what cops believe was a bid to destroy DNA evidence. At one point it was feared she would die from burns."

I think it did make the news as I recall, but it was some time back. I presume that like most crimes, reporting on them just goes quiet after the incident until the case gets to court.

Then the Sun can't even get the facts right about how he died

"who was knifed and had his throat slit"

versus

"the victim died from a single stab wound to the heart."

Regardless of whether facts are correct you do have to question how a man already being charged for GBH was granted bail.........yet if he'd stolen a mobile phone he'd probably be locked up

I'm sorry, but whether he was a a rapist or a church going saint, it makes no difference in my eyes. I feel sorry for the people who witnessed this, they'll probably never get this image out of their heads.
We dont have the death penalty in the country, so vigilante justice does not sit with me.
Though, I can understand why people would want to thake justice into their own hands.

And if it were my 16 year old daughter I think I might just take justice into my hands. Releasing him on bail for GBH and gang rape of a young girl - bloody shocking. My dd is just 16 and it really doesn't bear thinking about.

This is what has really upset and worried me. He was awaiting trial for gang rape and acid throwing, and a different trial for gbh/stabbing.

I just don't understand why he wasn't remanded in custody while awaiting trial. I really thought that people accused of this type of thing were taken off the streets for public protection.

Am I the only one in a bit of a panic about this? Presumably the other 9 in the gang rape and plenty of other people are out and about when rather niavely I would have though they would be put away for public protection while awaiting trial?

Bail decisions can be inconsistent, yes. There is a presumption for bail unless the prosecution can provide evidence of concern that they will breach the conditions of bail. There is no evidence so far this bloke DID breach those conditions.

The upshot of some posts here is that we are more comfortable to have a murderer out on the loose ( who we can identify with ) than an alledged rapist who has thus far kept to bail conditions. Not very sensible IMO.

It's utterly depressing. I'd not heard about the gang rape and it supposedly happened nearby.

How can it not have made the news?????

I'm usually innocent until proven guilty, but, having done jury service, and seen how violent suspects are bailed over and over whilst continuing to perpetrate further violent acts, I'm struggling a bit with the morality of this one.

Someone who has (allegedly) committed two serious offences should imvho be RIC, or at least in an AP, whilst awaiting trial.

One would assume that one offence was committed whilst on bail for the other. (I realise that may not be the case, but a possibility).

Pan - it wasn't "just" an alleged rape. They used caustic soda to destroy DNA, almost killing the victim. Have you any idea of the damage caustic soda does? It turns human flesh into liquid on contact. The girl will never fully recover.

If guilty of the various crimes he was on bail for, Bigby got away lightly I cannot believe that you would trivialise his actions.

Upwind - I rather think Pan's point is that he had been charged but not convicted. Therefore, still remained innocent until proven guilty, and whilst we no longer have a (alleged) rapist on the streets - we now have a murderer out there.

And whilst this girls life has been ruined and almost killed, evidently, it's not as bad as being killed.
