Steven Bigby the man stabbed to death in Oxford Street the other day.

compared to the BBC report

so was it "justice" - or is the sun trying to sell more papers?

On the balance of probabilities, a gang member who has been charged with such apalling separate attacks, is at a very high risk of offending again, and should definitely be RIC.

Cestlavie, for shame, skin colour has nothing to do with it

VeniVidiVickiQV · 15/05/2008 18:05

Cestlavie - people arent "found innocent". They are "found not guilty". The distinction being that being found not guilty simply means that there was not enough evidence, or was more than reasonable doubt.

figroll · 15/05/2008 18:28

Cestlavie - let's just not worry about gang rape and GBH then and just let them out on the streets.

Mr Bigby could have been innocent, so let's release him just in case, because it would be a pity to keep him on remand when he could be out there with the rest of the gang of 10 who raped the 16 year old.

LittleBella · 15/05/2008 22:04

"Let's never mind the fact that 25% of those who're on remand are found to be subsequently found innocent at trial"

As someone else pointed out, they're not found innocent, they're found not guilty. But that means that 75% are actually found guilty. So in fact, the overwhelming majority of remand prisoners are found guilty.

It is a problem that a quarter are found not guilty, but I think where you have a very serious crime with risk of absconding or re-offending or interfering with the jury, then you do have to have a remand system.

Still not sure who Blake Fielder Winehouse is? (I suppose I could google it...)

fruitloopsareallaroundme · 16/05/2008 07:50

After the media coverage I'd wager that the police are going to find this crime very difficult to solve if it's witnesses they need.

I am ashamed to say that if it were me I would not be coming forward and I suspect after this has all come out neither would others.

theAfkaUrbanDryad · 16/05/2008 08:09

I'm guessing Blake Fielder Winehouse is Amy Winehouse's other half who is currently being remanded in custody for perverting the course of justice after he was put on trial for drug offenses (i think)

But then if he was let out we'd prbably all be screaming from the rooftops that's it's ok for celebs - they get let out!

PortAndLemon · 16/05/2008 10:41

fruitloops -- the person who did this does not appear to have been motivated by revenge or justice. By the looks of things it was another gang member with much the same value system. So you don't come forward and this man who sees no problem with cutting someone's throat in the middle of Oxford Street over a spilt drink walks free. What would you then say to the sixteen-year-old that he goes on to rape, or to the family of his next victim?

fruitloopsareallaroundme · 16/05/2008 13:11

P&L I thought that was the case, has it been proved otherwise.

Twinkie1 · 16/05/2008 13:17

AMm I th only one who does not think twice about this guy? When I was the Evening Standard when it first happened I was thinking of the poor chaps family then when it came out what sort of piece of work he was I sighed a big sigh of relief that it was one less nasty piece of work off of the streets!

Really don't think the country has lost anything infact I cant think of anything nicer than locking these gangs all up together and letting them kill each other - would make the streets far safer for my kids as they grow up!

fruitloopsareallaroundme · 16/05/2008 13:22

As I said before twinkle I am ashamed to say I agree with you. With one bully killed though anotehr soon fills his/her shoes.

figroll · 16/05/2008 13:40

Portand lemon - I don't think that particular lunatic has walked free - I think the police have got him/them too, thank goodness.

It frightens me to think what sort of people are frequenting our high streets, but I won't lose any sleep over Mr Bigby.

PortAndLemon · 16/05/2008 14:11

The police have got him/them too (I think). But if all the witnesses did as fruitloops says she would do and refuse to come forward / make statements / testify then there may not be enough evidence to prosecute/convict.

unknownrebelbang · 16/05/2008 16:33

Most, if not all, witnesses of an incident like this would be too terrified to come forward.

It would take a brave individual to do so.

Of course they should come forward, but I can understand them not wanting to.

PortAndLemon · 16/05/2008 17:16

But (hypothetically... I don't think she was actually a witness) fruitloops wasn't going to not come forward because of being terrified but because the victim wasn't a nice man. Which is different (I have huge sympathy for anyone too terrified to come forward)
