What do Americans think of Trump after the events of the last few days?

Just wondering what Americans really think of Tump and Vance and do they agree with the way they treated Zelensky. Trump seems very popular in the US but surely the US people can't believe the way he treated Zelensky was right.

I continue to believe he’s a scary piece of shit who wants to run the country like one of his failed businesses.

Overtheatlantic · 03/03/2025 18:40

Not long ago, in my lifetime, he would have been jailed for life for treason.

SpuytenDuyvil · 03/03/2025 18:43

Terrible. Shocking, but not unexpected. He has proven who he is over the years.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/03/2025 18:50

I’m not American but I suspect the ones that liked him like him even more and the ones that loathed him loathe him even more

MissMoneyFairy · 03/03/2025 18:54

He picked on the wrong person, his beef should be with putin. The only upside is that Europe has renewed interest in the war but Trump and vance are both a disgrace and he won't back down or ever apologise.

Kentisbeare · 03/03/2025 21:50

What I'm hearing is that the reaction is split along party lines - the Democrats are appalled, and the Republicans support him.

How are Republicans coping with Russia now being feted by the USA?

Pussygaloregalapagos · 03/03/2025 22:03

Some of them think he is a great strong leader who doesn't pull his punches, speaks his mind and puts America First.

Some think he is a dangerous liability.

And some in between...... as always mixed views eh!!

Ellie54320 · 08/03/2025 15:34

There are only two reasons anyone would follow Trump - 1. They’re thick and don’t understand the politics so just follow their mates. 2. They do understand but are such self-centered nasty bastards they don’t give a s* and agree with what he’s doing. Trumps out for revenge and he’s taking ‘Merica down and the rest of the world with it. Why do you think he’s acting so fast? He needs to get this done before he’s removed from office, one way or another.

This is likely

The majority of Americans loathe them both - an unholy alliance of incompetence and viciousness.

However, bizarrely, one-third of the U.S. still clings to Trump. And liberals just can't understand why.

And Trump is NOT popular. His unpopularity numbers are sky-high.

Absolutely right. There are a number of things he had done that would qualify as treason, notably inciting the 1/6 insurrection riots.

A lot of Democrats - like me - are convinced there is something funny going on, that Putin has some hold over Trump.

Not American, but the polls suggest that he still has near universal support in the MAGA movement and around 9 out of 10 Republicans either approve or strongly approve of his record. However, the rest of the country does not agree. Overall, Trump has the worst rating of any president going back to Clinton at this stage of his term.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/01/2026 10:58

My American family were already appalled by him, and are in equal part mortified, angry and embarrassed.

I agree that Trumpers are die-hard loyalists, but reportedly more and more Reps are distancing themselves.
Trump had been generally considered by historians to be one of the three worst presidents (one of the others died shortly after taking office), and I'm sure that by now he would be in dead last place.

I am not sure this sort of thread applies to Trump as it might to another world leader. He’s so far outside the ballpark of what any reasonable person expects of a world-class statesman. Anyone who voted for him or supports him now either a) is genuinely too stupid to see what calibre of human being he is, or b) does see, and is of a similar ilk. Neither scenario suggests someone I would consider capable of growth tbh.

That's pretty accurate, except that I'd say Trump is outside the ball park of what any reasonable person expects from a sane, decent human being.

Well surely the majority of Americans voted the twat in ??? So really have nothing to complain about , same as starmer, u get what you vote for 🤷

No. No they didn’t. And comparing Trump to Starmer is disingenuous at best, thick at worst.

Technically, no. I like to remind people that the MAJORITY of Americans didn't vote for him. And apparently not even the majority of American voters.

But, yes, it's America's own fault.

Objecting to state sponsored murder is now sneered at for being fashionable seemingly.

I think Nige must have found this thread.

And for the PP yes I’d much rather have a Government that believed in public services, that wanted to encourage important trade links with our neighbours and that didn’t lie through its teeth than have one that wanted to sever links with other nations, has no integrity and is made up of a bunch of grifters, xenophobes and liars.

Jenrick, Braverman et al are not about us and our country they’re all about their own political ambitions. They’ve sold their own party down the river. They would have no compunction about doing the same to us.

And if people can’t see how Nige lied to us about the so-called ‘benefits’ of Brexit and how much damage it’s done to the country there’s no helping them.
