That has to be one of the scariest things I’ve ever watched.

We shouldn’t roll over for totalitarians just because they’re rich. That’s really not how this should work. We didnt act soon enough to stop Hitler.
We didn’t act strongly enough to stop Putin.

It's not how it should work, but that is how it does work. I'm not a Trump fan, but this is not his war, and why should he/ all of us continue to pay for it. What next do we all send troops in?. Would you be happy for your sons and daughters to go and die for Ukraine?. I certainly don't.

If it not his war, why does he want the mineral rights?

What's wrong with the Lend-Lease Act?

Vodkamartini3olives · 28/02/2025 20:09

I don't know, I can't speak for Trump, maybe he wants a little pay back for all the money his county has pumped into Ukraine so far?

crumpetswithcheeze · 28/02/2025 20:09

I personally think it's fantastic. Zelensky isn't willing to go for a peace deal so let him go it alone. To all those claiming he's being bullied.....get a grip, he's a grown man (supposedly anyway), and meant to be the leader of a country. If he can't handle a debate then how is he going to win a war. Also sick and tired of all the warmongers. Those of you with teenagers, take a step back and ask yourself how you'd feel if they were conscripted, cos that's the only other alternative.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 28/02/2025 20:14

I wondered how fast the Russian bots would latch onto this thread with the conscription "how would you feel about your sons, British Mothers?" It's the same copy for every conversation in which real people are appalled and disgusted by Putin's pet clown.

You really don't understand international politics.
Have a read up on Lend - Lease and get back to us.
The US always wants a return on its money, nobody doubts that.

If my son was in the army then I would accept he did his job

No one with half a brain thinks there is going to be conscription.

Darker · 28/02/2025 20:16

It’s not just about Ukraine. It’s about making it unacceptable for one country to help itself to other country’s territory (Putin) and resources (Trump).

Relax, two thirds of UK teens would't be fit enough to be conscripted. Have you not been to the UK?

InSpainTheRain · 28/02/2025 20:17

When Starmer grovelled to Trump by inviting him to a state visit I thought "Way too soon". I didn't expect to be proven right the next day. What a knob Trump is. Zelensky is the one who should be on a state visit, but of course he's not the sort of guy to need flattery, he's a hero in his own right. I for one will be protesting at the visit.

Chocolatefreak · 28/02/2025 20:20

Vodkamartini3olives · 28/02/2025 19:08

I agree the delivery and diplomacy could have been better, but essentially, I agree with him. How much money and resources can we all (especially the US) be expected to keep pumping into this. There has to be a deal at some point to bring this to an end. Zelinski can take the help bring offered, or he's on his own.

What a disgusting comment. Zelenskyy was being bullied to hand over his country's mineral resources without security, by two bullies who have nothing to fear - their country isn't being occupied. And since you clearly don't realise, Ukraine is taking the assault from Putin now, but when/if they fall, Putin will just move closer to the rest of Europe. Read your facts.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to call me a Russian bot

Russia has made it a war on all of us - there are just shockingly few people who read international news. Not to mention those who stick their head in the sand and think that this was has nothing to do with them just because enemy soldiers aren't physically dragging them from their homes in the middle of the night or bombing their cities to smithereens.

At what point WOULD you stand up and fight for what you believe in? Because the larger battle that's being waged right now is the one for freedom and democracy.

If my son were of age, I would be proud he is fighting for us. (And since I am from a country with compulsory military service, it is a more real concept to me than someone born in the UK.)

Vodkamartini3olives · 28/02/2025 20:28

Well, I'm certainly not a bot. And no, maybe I don't understand international politics. I just gave my opinion as many others did. I haven't been rude or aggressive. I just gave my opinion which holds as much weight in this situation as everyone else's on this thread- zero.

C152 · 28/02/2025 22:09

I assume that was in response to me, @Vodkamartini3olives . You have been pretty rude - and aggresive - so far, not to mention inaccurate in the comments you've been throwing around (and dangerous in repeating blatant disinformation). I may be blunt, but asking you what you would be willing to fight for isn't rude. You haven't answered, by the way.

Where were they rude and aggressive? In your imagination?

Nat6999 · 28/02/2025 23:48

The whole of Europe knows now we can no longer rely on the support from America, we need places like Canada, Japan, New Zealand & Australia to step up & take their place to stop Putin, otherwise we will be in World War 3.

murasaki · 28/02/2025 23:55

It was utterly abhorrent. These are supposed to be political figures and Trunp and Vance were acting like playground bullies. There should be no state visit, and Zelensky has more integrity in his little finger than either of those two. And yet Americans will be proud of that. And Putin will be loving it.

Not happy. But if it came to it yes. People didn’t want to send their children to fight Hitler. I’m glad they did.

BringBackTheCoffeeCreme · 01/03/2025 07:11

Re: Zelensky being bullied - did anyone watch the documentary about the mayor of Kiev?

I did and it really changed my opinion of Zelensky. He came across quite a horrible little man and he was quite happy to go on TV and publicly mock Klitschko: he was behaving like a schoolyard bully himself there. He also seemed happy to prance about in combat gear but wasn’t focused on the most important issues (checking that the city’s bomb shelters were fit for purpose and that they were being opened when needed, for example!) and seemed very self-interested and self-promoting.

I am NOT a Trump supporter btw. I was surprised though that I didn’t hear/see this commented on by anyone else after the documentary, as it presented a different narrative to the “Zelensky is such a brave hero” one that was presented to us in the UK press.

tinytemper66 · 01/03/2025 07:23

Nearly every decent person has condemned Trump and Vance's actions.

Europe has spent more than the US. I’m sure there will be reparations which it’s inconvenient for Trump to mention - the UK ended paying reparations to the USA for WWII in 2006!!

Because the USA, UK and Russia (oh the irony) promised to come to Ukraine’s defence if they disarmed their nuclear arsenal.

So yes, it is his war. And giving Ukraine financial support is the least we should be doing.

My son is in the RAF. He would do his job. It is what he signed up for. I would be concerned bur his choice.
