I wonder if they started drinking earlier, as soon as they got there.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 09:42

even on the flight?

belgo · 05/05/2008 09:43

I think it unlikely that someone would slip something into the drinks of parents in charge of yound children, who had only just arrived on holiday. Although of course it's possible.

WinkyWinkola · 05/05/2008 09:46

Oh dear. Poor kids.

They must have drunk an awful lot. Maybe they were on antibiotics or something to get in such a state?

But it doesn't look at all good for the caring British parent, does it?

they took their 6 year old son out of school and then he gets taken into care in Portugal.

A few years ago I went on my one and only package holiday to Spain (never will again) to celebrate my SIL's hen night (otherwise I wouldn't have agreed to go even once).

One night, about 2am I was sitting on my balcony having a brandy after a meal out and I saw a man and woman on their way back from some bar and they were also so drunk they couldn't move. They had slumped down a wall and were sat on the floor and their poor children were crying their eyes out. The baby was in the buggy and the 3 year old was crying pitifully "mummy, mummy, get up please". Thankfully, someone eventually called the police.

So the incident reported in the link above isn't an isolated one. It happens all the time.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 05/05/2008 09:52

What an atrocious way to behave, assuming they were drunk and didn't have food poisoning or something.

Why do people with small children expect to have a 'me time' holiday?

My sister lives in Gran Canaria. She sees this all the time. The worst culprits are the brits and the scandies. Some apartment owners are specifically refusing to rent out to them because of their drunken behaviour and because they threaten the neighbours, behave like thugs, and trash the flats. Many leave their kids alone at the holiday rents and go out drinking.

That must be so frightening for the poor little kids.

bobsyouruncle · 05/05/2008 10:27

poor children, so selfish and irresponsible if they just went out drinking. But I did wonder if something else had happened to get them both in that state in such a short time...

NorthernLurker · 05/05/2008 10:37

I don't think there is any special reason for this. Many people are just staggeringly selfish and stupid - sadly being a parent doesn't exempt them from that.
And - yes - I am feeling very judgemental today

nametaken · 05/05/2008 10:38

I expect they started drinking the minute they got to the airport - of course you have to arrive 3 hours before the flight leaves these days so after you've checked in, that leaves an awful lot of time to kill. Probably continued drinking on the plane, knowing they didn't have to drive when they got there and then they just carried on drinking.

Poor little children. They can come stay with us - forever if they want. They must have been so frightened

bobbysmum07 · 05/05/2008 11:34

Hang on a minute. I thought you weren't supposed to be 'judgemental' on this forum. What happened to being symapthetic towards people who make 'mistakes' they will have to live with forever?

Or don't these kids look like yours?
