This is of course an absolutely tragic event.
I'm feeling a bit mean by saying this.........but why is it the headline topic on BBC news?
I genuinely feel sorry for those involved, but don't understand why it's the dominant news story?

The public only knows as much as the media will report. The actual identities and circumstances of the people involved may never come to light. Hypothetically, if some of world's richest and most powerful people wanted to execute a revenge plan, it would be incredibly easy to stage things in a way that an average citizen would believe was an accident. They just need a few connections with the press or police or even a person willing to take the fall but guaranteed acquittal of the crime further down the line. It could have been an agent who built up a civilian identity over several years. (Not all that far-fetched considering that case of the USA CIA agent who hit that boy by accident). Same for possibly sabotaging a boat during cover of a storm. There's currently an investigation into the crew for possibly leaving portholes open, keels down or some other mistake that led to the tragedy. That implies there was definitely the possibility that such a disaster was caused by human action, whether deliberate or accidental.

Given that the women who hit him was local, I'm pretty sure that it will be entirely clear who she is. People will know her. People will have witnessed the accident or the aftermath. They will have seen her car.

I'm starting to be fascinated by the way some people's brains can shut out clear and obvious facts, not to mention all logic, in order to imagine, and then entirely believe, the massively unlikely.

So much simpler to assume human error. Pulling off a complex conspiracy like that is the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters and best-selling thrillers. In real life it just couldn't be done.

Robert Maxwell ........

Well of course there is! Any loss of ship, plane etc will be covered by a national or international authority who need to understand what happened to avoid it happening again.

The BAe Comet failed in flight because of the design of its windows - plane windows were changed after this. Changes to override alarms were made following analysis of the Air France black box (which showed the feedback to the pilots about the angle of the plane was confusing).

There may have been human error, there may have been a design flaw, it may be advised to not build masts as big as the Bayesian's given increased extreme weather risk. It is the right and proper thing to do, it means nothing about a conspiracy or deliberate act.

And if you mean this case (Harry Dunn), she wasn't a CIA agent, she was the wife of a US diplomat:

The next theory will probably be that the local person who knocked down and killed Mr. Chamberlain was a sleeper agent or killer for hire.

I suppose in time the Marine investigation will give its report and until then we know nothing.

As for mysterious deaths, the one where the man was shot in the Alps near Annecy was a wow one for me. Still unsolved and so mysterious.

I think the suggestion is the almost certainly traumatised middle aged local woman is part of an international conspiracy, yes😵‍💫

These are tragedies and families are mourning their loved ones. Mike Lynch’a wife has lost her husband and daughter during what was meant to be a celebration! I genuinely cannot believe how detached people can be, discussing these horrific events like it’s a soap opera😢

Robert Maxwell ........

Robert Maxwell was not knocked down by a car driven by a local resident. I know nothing about the driver in the Stephen Chamberlain case but the impression I have is that she had been living in the area for some time. I have no idea how long Mr Chamberlain had been living there and how long it had been his habit to go out running on the local roads. To suggest this was a long-planned conspiracy is like a fever dream.

Robert Maxwell was also the only person who disappeared from his yacht. Professional assassins surely don't go around faking accidents that kill half a dozen people in a way that draws the attention of half the world's media.

I agree. For anyone with any personal connection to these families this must make these awful tragedies even harder to bear.

Collateral damage. Just one target = assassination, more than the target = horrible accident/weather event where the target gets killed also.

Along with the "sleeper agent/killer for hire driver", well the theories are mounting!

I don't mean disrespect to those who died, I am pointing out how conspiracy theories escalate I suppose.

It's unlikely anyone with a personal connection will be bothering with this snakepit calling itself Mumsnet. Why on earth would they?

These poor people , whose lives have been utterly shattered, including the local lady who accidentally killed a runner.

Not only do they have to deal with such unbelievable tragedy. But it comes on the heels of triumph in a David v Goliath type court case where they had 0.5% chance of winning. They were extradited against their will, facing 20 years plus in prison.

To come through that and survive, to then die 2 months later is utterly tragic. It is not a conspiracy and it is not divine retribution. It is simply very bad luck. And a coincidence that it happened to both within 48 hours of each other.

It is like a film plot so the gossip and conspiracy is understandable. But having a distant connection to one of the deceased myself, I can assure you that they are real people who are loved by families who are traumatised right now. They don’t need conspiracy dickheads further ruining their lives.

I fear that this story will have legs because there is so much fuel for the fire here eg it caused the forced sale of a leading U.K. cybersecurity company to the US … and people will jump on aspects like this to draw fanciful theories.

It's far from impossible that someone personally connected to one of these families was here anyway. There are millions of registered Mumsnet users.

Well maybe because MN was part of their lives long before their world changed in the most unimaginable way!

And when something is a part of your every day life, you will automatically log on even when life has taken the most horrific turn and suddenly your family tragedy has become part of an international story😥

I find it bizarre that you find that so unbelievable!

The status of Anne Sacoolas is murky. She and her husband were based at the RAF site known to be used by US Intelligence. It's fairly standard for intelligence agents to be operating under diplomatic cover. The fact that the Americans wanted her out of the country so quickly suggests she wasn't just a diplomat's wife.

EsmaCannonball · 21/08/2024 22:39

I don't actually think any conspiracy has gone on here but I also don't agree that assassinations always avoid collateral damage. Off the top of my head I am thinking of the way Putin had the Wagner leader killed along with everyone else on that plane, including the pilots and the female cabin crew member.

The idea of being stuck in a cabin taking in water while a boat is sinking is horrendous. RIP all who lost their lives and huge condolences to those who lost family and friends in this tragedy.

Bunnycat101 · 22/08/2024 09:31

It must be particularly devastating to lose your husband and daughter in one event like that- I don’t even know how someone would process that. The Mail is speculating that he went back down to try and find the daughter. The level of reporting is higher than I’d expect though especially now it’s clear there won’t be more survivors- it’s been front page for days.

tbh the only other news is Molly Mae & GCSEs, not much going on at the mo. And if people weren’t clicking the Mail wouldn’t be producing the articles.

My heart goes out to Mrs Lynch, her husband is dead, her 18yo daughter still missing... i don't know how she'll even start to rebuild her life again.

How the heck can a super yacht not withstand a storm in a harbour, when many far far cheaper and smaller boats were all ok.

The deaths of so many of the super rich in a luxury yacht is always going to dominate the news, there is plenty to report on atm, Ukraine, Gaza, USA, Labour here.

Possibly because it was so big - it has the second largest mast in the world. And possibly because it was the epicentre of the waterspout - if the yacht 100 metres away had been, it might have tipped over

You cannae change the laws of physics - smaller and cheaper doesn't necessarily mean less stable.

Putin is above the law and wants people to know what he's done.
