@Sparklingnorthernlights my father is a nasty twat and we're no contact. Hope that clears things up for you.

@twistyizzy I hear you about middle class Londoners ( me, I guess) pontificating. It's a complicated issue, and not unique to the UK. Everywhere in the world, people like to blame others when they fall on tough times, and gravitate towards the far right.

I hope such discussions are not shut down. .

Me too, Starmer really doesn't understand the issue and how is language is actually playing into the narrative of the far right. He sums up the metropolitan elite that these people hate as he represents the political elite who caused all their original problems. Labour just don't understand this as in their heads they represent the working class who should think like Labour think. The fact that many Labour MPs are Oxford educated and therefore have no idea what people in Sunderland think completely escapes Labour. Just cos Phillipson is from the NE doesn't mean she understands the region, her experience is so far removed from the lives of the majority.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 03/08/2024 08:33

There are a LOT of middle class social justice warriors on here, who never have to worry about the issues they sneer dismissively at. They say they care about those in poverty, immigrants etc but don’t actually like them that much and live in very white middle class areas. They would be utterly horrified if a refugee hotel set up across the road. They refuse to confront their hypocrisy.

There was a hotel used for refugees for ages in my town, very close to my house (I'm in the SE, in a middle class area I suppose). People were not horrified, I certainly wasn't. There were never any issues with people protesting, and we aren't one of the places listed as having a planned riot tonight.
Yes, I do sneer dismissively at people who set fire to cars and loot (in their own towns as well, a special kind of stupid given their complaints about their area being left behind). They deserve derision if they think violence is appropriate.
People can have valid concerns about immigration. But the people involved in the riots aren't looking for reasonable discussion, they're just looking for something to throw a brick at.

But that's because they don't feel that they have a voice other than violence! Yes they are idiots and they couldn't care less about the 3 poor girls or their families but your comments just highlight the fact you don't understand the issues.

midgetastic · 03/08/2024 08:38

The thing is that the people who are rioting who perhaps feel angry and marginalised are supporting a far right ideology that is always happy to leave people behind , that basically sees them as foot soldiers and cannon fodder - get them to stir up trouble but the right have otherwise left them behind since thatcher

Give starmer half a chance and he might be able to improve their lives but but if they end up with a criminal record

midgetastic · 03/08/2024 08:39

They have a voice they just don't like that they lost the vote

There's also some men who just bloody love some aggro and a fight. It's fun and exciting for them. So any excuse...even if they don't actually give a damn what it's all about. Known men like this all my adult life.

I know an ex 1980s Millwall man, all grown up, calmed down, nearly 60, respectable. He told me about being in a train carriage recently where there'd been a 'bit of a Barney' and his eyes literally lit up with excitement.

I've saw that glint in the eye when talking to ex Aberdeen casuals when they recount past hooligan escapades.

midgetastic · 03/08/2024 08:39

Wrong. They don't feel that they have a voice. They look at politicians and see no-one who represents them. No politicians care about ex-mining or industrial town in NE England with little public transport, few jobs, where most kids leave education at 16 (if they get that far) and high anti social behaviour.
The feeling is that all politicians have deserted them and washed their hands of these places. Hence Farage can come in and offer them a glimmer of something better.

Sparklingnorthernlights · 03/08/2024 08:07

Off topic but aren't you nice denigrating and mocking your own father to prove a point. Certainly showing your true colours (no pun intended).

That's what I thought too. My dad was born in 1929. Left school at 15. He was a milkman all his life, getting up at 4am in all weather's to earn a living and to feed his family. At times he did 2 jobs to make ends meet. How was he supposed to "better himself "? Go to university? He was and intelligent man but back then the top end when to university.
So like many thousands of men of his generation he had to put up and shut up and do a shitty job to feed his family. The only state benefit being family allowance (child benefit) and you didn't get that for your firstborn back then

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/08/2024 08:45

If groups of people, who rightly or wrongly feel that they are "natives" of a country, feel marginalised and left out of society they will always look for scapegoats.

///

Maybe but you make a choice about how you respond to the shit life throws at you and these animals have made a choice to go out and wreak havoc and violence. For fun.

Really, do they really believe their cunty actions will result in a positive change? Of course not they just want a fight and anyone who believes otherwise is shockingly naive.

And to use the death of those poor children is disgusting

I agree with you but it is too simplistic to say that they are all hooligans. All I'm trying to point out is that many of these people don't feel that they have a choice. I am in no way sympathising with them, or excusing their actions, but continuing with the narrative of them all being far right extremists who enjoy a fight is to over simplify the issue and to ignore the underlying reasons.
That's why Starmer's language is causing such a backlash, he is doing what all politicians do ie washing his hands of them

But they are the ones now dealing with this

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/08/2024 08:53

My dad is now 80+ and left Scotland in his twenties to join the army to better himself after the steel industry closed down. He is a hard worker and did 20+ years but didn't rise high rank wise. Other than some memories and meeting my mum he doesn't have much to show for this career. When he left the forces he and mum weren't well off and dad had x 3 jobs in civvy street on the go at any time to put food on the table. He worked his arse off and has nothing to show for it but passed down an incredibly hard work ethic to my brothers and I.

He is disgusted by the scenes from last night and believes there is no excuse for what we've seen. None.

These fucking animals do not speak for the disenfranchised as much as they would like you to believe

They are, but they are not to blame for years of Tory anti immigration rhetoric

The issues started with Thatcher and New Labour failed to improve the situation. The issues go back 40 years and parties of all colours have failed to improve the lives of people in these towns.

What your father done is what most working class people end up with, hard slog all their lives and next to nothing to show for it,I read somewhere that people should be putting £400 a month into a private pension...many people do not have this after paying out the necessary.

Oh give me a break. If anyone believes Farage gives one shit about them, I've got a bridge to sell them.

Thanks and you no doubt are very proud of him.

Some mumsnetters are using recent events to increase their "anti male rhetoric". Give your heads a wobble. How is that not divisive?

Starmer is not helping and is inflaming tensions with the press conference

If his trafficking policies fail this will increase

Again, you come from a place of education and opportunity to be able to see through Farage. The fundamental reason why Reform is so popular is precisely because these people feel that he does offer them something, even if it is only the opportunity to blame "others" for their disenfranchment.
By scorning their lack of ability to see through Farage et al and applying liberal, MC, educated logic you exacerbate the issue. That's why there is so much backlash against Starmer's statements.

midgetastic · 03/08/2024 09:03

How long has starmer had to sort this ?

How quickly do you actually believe this can be sorted ?

The tories made the mess and the Mir friend fanned the flames

There's a higher proportion of idiots and morons in the north east. As someone who regularly travels between the north and south, it's definitely noticeable.

I'm from the north east but really considering leaving the area.

Stupid fools last night.
