"Possessions and clothes belonging to Jay Slater were found alongside the body discovered by Spanish authorities, a missing persons organisation has said.

"It is understood the body was also found close to the site of the last location of the 19-year-old's mobile phone."

More links on the page. Looks like he stumbled around, fell, and that was it. No conspiracies, no international drug cartels, no kidnapping. Just a sleep-deprived, hungover and brain-addled city kid with no clue 😢

Jay Slater latest: Teenager 'could have suffered accident' as body found in Tenerife

Search teams in Spain have found human remains in the area Jay Slater went missing, Sky News has been told - with early investigations pointing to an accident or fall in an "inaccessible area" in the village of Masca.

It certainly took a very weird turn on social media with all the conspiracy theories. I'm relieved for his family, but would hate to think how much money this has cost the Teneride authorities. Perhaps the family could donate some of the money that was raised for them... £54.5k is a lot of money, after all.

Garlickest · 15/07/2024 21:22

It would be nice if they did, @LizzieBennett73. We shall see (or not).

Oh, that's sad. Whatever the strange twists and turns of the case, a young man has lost his life, and a family have lost their son/brother. I hope the fact that his body has now been found brings them some peace.

Possessions and clothes found "alongside the body" sounds kind of odd.

I thought that too, wonder if it’s a translation issue from the Police and they mean as well as.

Possessions and clothes found "alongside the body" sounds kind of odd.

It’s also very odd that he was found in the same location as where he made that last phone call. The very location where they started the search, and which was searched repeatedly

Choux · 15/07/2024 23:22

If he didn't die immediately after falling he may have been very hot in the middle of the day so removed some clothes. It might also be a poor translation of 'along with possessions and clothes'.

He must have died almost a month ago. There is going to be a lot of decomposition is the Canary Islands in summer. They might never be able to ascertain how he died beyond he must have fallen or if it was instant.

It wasn't in the precise location, just the same bit of the island.

I don’t think it sounds odd? Alongside, like beside or near his body. That sounds right, surely

Back in mid-June the rescuers set out to try and find him alive. They may have decided not to search in deep ravines or other locations where the chance of survival was minimal and the time required to put people into that location safely was high. Once the object of the search changed from a missing person to a likely dead body, they will have felt less pressure to prioritise certain areas. On that account, it's not odd at all.

whiteboardking · 15/07/2024 23:45

Nothing odd to me. Sounds like he fell down a deep ravine. They were looking for a survivor. With no water or food either he'd have had little chance. Very sad but if he set off walking in those conditions and possibly under the influence plus no sleep / alcohol etc it fits the story

Boars, crows etc. All could disturb the body.

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 16/07/2024 01:56

God, it’s so sad. I didn’t follow it at all while things were at peak search coverage, but it’s terrible to imagine any young person dying in that way. (I did pick up that he had some kind of dodgy past, but even so)

Possessions alongside the body, fine. Clothes ON the body, surely?

I less it's being misreported it wasn't the same place it was a 20 minute walk away which could be up to a mile, that's a huge radius for a search on those mountains

Zonder · 16/07/2024 06:38

Not if animals ate him. They haven't said the clothes were intact.

But think about how long the body has been there, and the conditions. I mean, I don’t want to get into grotesque detail. I just think people are seeing ‘oddness’ in that phrasing where there is none, and I would imagine it is accurate.

Choux · 16/07/2024 09:35

The time taken for a body to decompose depends on climatic conditions, like temperature and moisture, as well as the accessibility to insects. In summer, a human body in an exposed location can be reduced to bones alone in just nine days.

Source: australian.museum/about/history/exhibitions/death-the-last-taboo/decomposition-body-changes/#:~:text=The%20time%20taken%20for%20a,alone%20in%20just%20nine%20days.

Summer in Spain and a body out in the wild. I expect they only found bones, clothes and his phone. They should be able to tell if he fell and broke bones but beyond that his family will likely never know.

mitogoshi · 16/07/2024 10:28

It may also be a translation issue.

123ZYX · 16/07/2024 10:38

I think clothes and possessions being with him is to show there's no evidence of crime (no theft, for example) - they're saying it was most likely an accidental death based on current evidence

If he's wandererd round in circles then feel off an edge, the scent is kindly too muddled to follow. Of course it's possible someone came back and dumped a body bit usually the simplest explanation is right.

Hoppinggreen · 16/07/2024 10:56

His poor Mum
At least they can stop looking for him and hoping he is ok now.
Hopefully he died from the fall and wasn't there injured for a while

Mystro202 · 16/07/2024 11:01

May he RIP 🙏 🩵 I just wonder what spooked him, it has been repeatedly reported that something had spooked him at the B&B and that's why he left in a hurry. Also did this have anything to do with his death.

They'll need money to repatriate his body I'd imagine and for a funeral.
