Which newspaper to subscribe to?

I'm going to treat myself to a newspaper subscription for 2024 Have wanted to do this for AGES. The only reason I haven't is the monthly / annual cost. But then every night I am reading nonsense on my iPad. Insta Twitter and Mumsnet mostly, easily for an hour, such a waste!

But which one? I'm between two. If I buy a weekend paper it will be the guardian/ observer. Enjoy the food supplement, Marina Hyde, Grace Dent. I'm also drawn to The Times I- have subscribed in the past amd enjoyed the vast amount of info on offer, puzzles etc. Only stopped because of cost.

Tell me about your subscriptions please.

The Times.

It’s a brilliant paper. Really high quality journalism, excellent campaigning journalism and has led the way on issues the Guardian has been too scared to go near. Excellent comment pieces too.

It’s easily the most feminist of the broadsheets as well.

An online subscription will be a lot cheaper. I currently pay £29 a year for my broadsheet. There are always offers on.

I have The Times on my phone, I don't read all of it every day because there is so much but agree that mostly the content is excellent, although I roll my eyes a bit at the property and all the millionaires lifestyle sections. The campaigning work is excellent and I agree about their important contribution on women's rights, they have some superb columnists.

Sorry I meant online subscription Jantlet. Actual paper delivery isn't an option for me. Which paper do you subscribe to? £29 a year seems a seriously good deal.

This has made me want to subscribe to The Times. Dabbled with Apple News on my phone for a while and initially the articles were interesting but became few and far between.

Yumyum33 I'm going to do it. Been toying with the idea for so long but I waste so much time scrolling through rubbish. My time is more valuable than that.

The Times for me too. As PPs say, they were speaking up for women over the sex v gender issue long before any of the other papers.

If you are a member of your local library, UK, you can sign into free Pressreader app or go on the website. It has loads of newspapers and magazines. It has saved me a fortune, not sure if it has The Times but has The Guardian, Express etc and Readers Digest. Can all be read on your phone or tablet. You just search and then add as a favourite.

Oh wow I didn't know that about the local library, that's genius. I will be signing into press reader, thanks for that Peace. I am a huge fan of BorrowBox- well done the libraries.

BUT I am also going to treat myself to a newspaper subscription. And it's looking like The Times is getting all the votes. Getting excited flutters!

I think the first question is which of the papers do you enjoy reading in real life? It might be worth buying a real one over the next few days and seeing if their style of journalism, areas of interest and politics are something you like. Visiting relatives over the past couple of weeks has reminded me that I really can't cope with The Telegraph or the Daily Mail.
I subscribe to The Times but do find many of its articles quite light & don't like how the app updates so some stories stay for days when others disappear quite quickly. However, I love many of the commentators and the Su Doku and generally find that it keeps me up to date with many of the key news stories. I also read the Economist for more in depth coverage.

I hear you re The Telegraph and The Daily Mail - neither excite me at all. I have a couple of foodie friends who adore The Guardian and I very occasionally treat myself to that at the weekend. But I'm looking for a daily dose of interesting articles and puzzles. I'm encouraged that you find The Times 'quite light' wide awake as I do want to challenge myself and broaden my understanding and knowledge of the world but I think I'm more of a 'light' reader than a true intellectual. I also enjoy the Times lists - rich list, schools, where to live, all that lovely nonsense.

You beat me to it! I’ve recently gone back to university so have re subscribed, this time as a student - it is the most wonderful bargain.

Prior to this, I was a ‘normal’ Times subscriber for 12 years, on and off because of finances, mostly on. They are desperate to keep and gain subscribers so each time I called to cancel, they offered me a lower subscription payment. I rarely paid more than £10 a month during that 12 years. So, OP, my advice is to tell them you want to come back and ask for a reduced rate.

I also like the Times. I read several newspapers and find the Guardian and Telegraph both lean towards absurd levels of outrage. The times is the most sensible. I don’t subscribe at the moment because it was expensive and I miss it.

I think I'm going to do that 1975. I can subscribe now for 99p for three months but then it's £26 a month. I would have to use it daily and get a huge amount out of it to even consider this. But £10 a month I'd be happy to pay. Right I'm going for it.

Another vote for The Times. I’d echo a previous poster too about how much you want to pay to subscribe. I called them recently, moaned I was paying too much, so they offered to reduce it by 75% for six months so I’m currently paying £6.50 a month.
