Which newspaper to subscribe to?

I'm going to treat myself to a newspaper subscription for 2024 Have wanted to do this for AGES. The only reason I haven't is the monthly / annual cost. But then every night I am reading nonsense on my iPad. Insta Twitter and Mumsnet mostly, easily for an hour, such a waste!

But which one? I'm between two. If I buy a weekend paper it will be the guardian/ observer. Enjoy the food supplement, Marina Hyde, Grace Dent. I'm also drawn to The Times I- have subscribed in the past amd enjoyed the vast amount of info on offer, puzzles etc. Only stopped because of cost.

Tell me about your subscriptions please.

Just had a crazy fantasy. If I subscribe then my teen DD will get to share won't she, as one of my Apple family and friends? Maybe. And then maybe she will discover a love of great journalism and an interest in the world beyond what TikTok has to offer. Just maybe? #kiddingmyself

I also like the Times. I read several newspapers and find the Guardian and Telegraph both lean towards absurd levels of outrage. The times is the most sensible. I don’t subscribe at the moment because it was expensive and I miss it.

I agree with this. I used to subscribe to the Guardian years ago, The Times is much more balanced.

Oh really? I'm so pleased sharing works!

The Times. I started subscribing so that I would be exposed to opinions other than those I was seeing in The Guardian, and it was the latter I ended up cancelling.

Oh my word, that’s amazing - well done!

IMO The Times is the only newspaper worth paying for.

The Guardian is truly awful - and is dying a not-so-slow death, as is the Telegraph (which is up for sale: I can’t see that improving it).

urbanbuddha · 27/12/2023 08:59

The Times, although the btl comments can often lift a veil into another world I don’t want to be part of. I still read The Guardian - I don’t think it’s all bad. It still has some incisive political comment and hopefully it’ll pick up again when the current editor goes.

Financial Times is a really good paper. It gives you more information and is more balanced than most.

I don't like The Times - it is limited and feels like the broadsheet equivalent of the Daily Mail.

Happyme2024 · 27/12/2023 09:06

Is The Times right leaning? I'm still reading The Guardian but actually hate it. I'm not sure where to go.

urbanbuddha · 27/12/2023 09:09

Yes, I would say The Times is right leaning but you adjust for that and I like Camilla Long and Hadley Freeman. I read both The Times and The Guardian and avoid the sources of annoyance in each.

I share my email address and password, not sure actual family sharing works but I also have a student subscription so maybe that is different (since 2000 - the benefit of a phd that never ends).

Ok I've gone for it with The Times. But now worried. The app said subscribe for 99p for three months then will be full price. Fine, so clicked on subscribe but it looks as though I'm immediately paying £25.99 a month. What? Going to enjoy my first look around the site but really hoping I haven't just paid full price for it.

I thought you called them to negotiate the cost after the three months?

The Times.

You can read the Guardian/Observer online without a subscription. The Huffington Post can be accessed free online as well.

The Telegraph is too much of the Torygraph these days and lost any kind of impartiality a long time ago...

It is hard isn't it to find a decent newspaper these days. They all seem to be so obviously biased.

As a liberal, lefty, feminist I have no idea of what to read anymore.

The Guardian is appalling most of the time and their columnist are absolutely dire.

As a Londoner I also feel sad that the Evening Standard seems to be getting worse and worse.

yumyum33 · 27/12/2023 10:26

I keep logging into the Guardian and after about a week it won't recognise my log in. I don't know if this is part of a plot to make me subscribe.

Still very tempted by The Times (thank you this thread] but £26 pm seems a lot. And when I read that back I think blimey, less than a quid a day and I'm dithering. I'm sure you all know what I mean though. When you check your bank and see the endless list of outgoings it's like - what, another one!

msmatcha · 27/12/2023 23:02

I've been on The Times for about an hour today, very happy with my decision. Just hope it really is 99p for three months.
