LOL I came on this thread to say Fred and Rose West. I was actually 7 or 8 but my parents turned the news off a lot around then (we were also banned from talking about The Troubles or knowing about new IRA attacks, being Irish). Di and Charles' divorce. The end of Thatcher (I remember Major though).

The reason the Wests come to mind is I actually only found out about them earlier this year. I am almost forty and for feck's sake I had to sleep with the light on that night as I'd read the Wikipedia page at work. 😱
Edited to add: I'd Googled them because I'd been reading a true crime thread on MN and didn't know who they were. 🤦‍♀️

Watergate
3 day week
Flixborough- my favourite conspiracy theory
Man U being relegated 😜
Moorgate tube crash

I'm just able to remember the summer of 76 though and queuing for water from a stand pipe.

Lockerbie. I was six and we live in Scotland but I was unaware of it until much later in my life.

I was born in 1973, I remember Concord being on the news, don't remember Elvis dying and the first big news story I remember actually sitting and paying attention to was John Lennon being murdered in 1980, shortly followed by the Yorkshire Ripper being caught.

Moon landing. I vaguely remember the Vietnam war being on the news regularly. The Beatles, I was born in 2964 but don’t remember them until John Lennon died and all their music was rereleased.
I do remember the Troubles, it was sort of the backdrop to my childhood. I started Uni in Birmingham in 1982 and the effects of the city centre bombing had had a major impact on the city centre. There was no nightlife centrally, the clubs were on the periphery and people were still a bit wary of venues. It is so different now. We had a lecture by the consultant who was on call at the Accident Hospital the night it happened, it was horrific. Coincidentally one of the midwives who looked after me while I was in for complications was the daughter of a barmaid working in one of the pubs.
I also grew u in West Yorkshire so the Yorkshire Ripper case was very real. Although like most teenagers we were oblivious to the risks.

Me too. I was less than a month old when he was assassinated. I do remember the first moon landing; it's my earliest memory of a news story. I was five and I remember my mum bringing me in to the room and telling me the man on the television was walking on the moon.
