Here's a running thread of all the things the current Prime Minister cannot recall whilst under oath at the Covid Inquiry.

Some more understandable than others I'd humbly suggest.

I’ve been in work all day so missed most of it. Can I take it from this thread that Rishi’s evidence was that he struggles to remember anything, had no idea what was going on in the Treasury, much less anyone else’s department and as. Chancellor he was out of the loop on all decisions because nobody told him anything. And despite being in the middle of a crisis he didn’t think to find out what was going on.

Lucky he doesn’t have an important job now…

That is my understanding of the situation.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/12/2023 17:39

I hadn’t realised problems with memory were such a side effect of covid inquiries as well as covid.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/12/2023 18:48

How was he in a position to make any decisions?

He can't remember important information needed and isn't bright enough to write it down.
He is married to the daughter of one of the wealthiest tech people in the world and is incapable of keeping hold of important tech.
Despite being surrounded by the best specialists in a time of crisis, he failed to ask for advice.
When he was given advice he refused to take it.
He is incapable of putting petrol in a car.
His relationship with truth and accountability is sketchy at best.

How the fuck did the conservatives decide he is the best person to run the country?
Every one of them needs to be held accountable for the farce that was covid and this last few years.

To have the gall to turn up to an enquiry designed to prevent government making them same mistakes in the future and say you don't remember anything, can't help with evidence, and don't really give a shit takes some doing.

bombastix · 11/12/2023 18:58

It's what you get when you have a billionaire in charge of the country. Being PM is another trinket.

It explains the attitude

In this clip he seems to have forgotten that he’s just spent ages telling everyone that EOTHO wasn’t about behaviour it was purely fiscal.

Leslie Thomas, "What measures were in place to address the vulnerabilities of ethnic minority workers in hospitality?"

Rishi Sunak, "The jobs were important to save"

LT, "What measures were in place?"

RS, "That's in the government's guidance to the sector which was 55 pages long, and 100 pages guidance form UK Hospitality, which had detailed guidance, on how workforces of all ethnicities were protected at work"

LT, "Can we agree your Eat Out To Help Out took low paid workers into an environment of increased infection?"

RS, "No, I don't agree. These workplaces were safe and deemed to be safe for everybody"

LT, "In planning EOTHO, what assessments were made of risks to multi generational households, particularly those form black and asian backgrounds?"

RS, "EOTHO was designed in the context of lifting regulations" #CovidInquiry

The phase ‘covid safe’ is coming back to me. 55 pages of guidance where if we just pretended the guidelines (no actual rules obvs) the virus would no we were serious and not be transmitted from worker to worker.

I know.

It's like Johnson, Sunak and the rest of the nutcases thought: Oh look a 55 page guidance report. We are not going to read it, but we'll make Mr Covid knows the rules. Mr Covid will know not to infect anyone dining out. Guaranteed success, hurrah for everyone

I'm not sure if MN's coverage has moved onto another thread, but I'm only on this one and my jaw has just dropped (again) at yesterday's news.

Penny Mordaunt: Boris Johnson’s messages vanished from my phone
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/dec/19/penny-mordaunt-boris-johnsons-messages-vanished-from-my-phone

But searching for the exchange, she found not only that it seemed to be missing but that she could find no messages to or from Johnson between March 2018 and March 2020.
[...]
Baffled at what might have happened, and being told that a third party could not delete messages, Mordaunt said she sought a meeting with Dan Rosenfield, Johnson’s chief of staff.
“From memory, we asked 14 times for a meeting with him, but had no response from his team, despite my office chasing this,” she said.
“I offered to have my phone forensically examined if this would help. I was told, after some chasing, that they would be happy to do this, but as my phone was my own personal device the CO [Cabinet Office] would have to charge me for this.
“The estimated bill was approximately £1,000 per day for six weeks’ work. I did some research with the government-approved cybersecurity contractors as to their rates and an initial interrogation of my phone would have costed approximately £1,000.”

MP tells Covid inquiry that then prime minister’s chief of staff ignored repeated attempts to discuss matter

DuncinToffee · 20/12/2023 17:58

We are discussing it on the Sunak thread

But yeah, Johnson lying under oath. Gove as well. Nothing accidental about the missing whatsapps.

DuncinToffee · 20/12/2023 18:03

The i newspaper has a few recent articles on written evidence but they are behind paywall

Here is one of them

Boris Johnson hoped the creation of a new rapid test for Covid would “get Whitehall and the whole British army of bludgers and skivers back into the office”, his private WhatsApp messages to aides have revealed

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/12/2023 18:05

Accusing other people of skiving is a bit rich coming from Boris.

JenniferBooth · 20/12/2023 19:42

There is no way articles about this should be behind a paywall when we ALL had to endure the lockdowns

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/12/2023 18:05

Accusing other people of skiving is a bit rich coming from Boris.

It is something he specialises in, along with procreating.

We knew they were awful, but the sheer level of dishonesty and callousness is breathtaking.
Angela Rayner was letting them off lightly calling them scum. And yet nothing will happen to them ans Sunak is now PM FFS!

And yet there was a woman on the news yesterday when they were talking to Peter Bones constituents. She was saying she doesn't know what to do because she can't vote labour.

I do worry that when it comes to it enough people will say they can't vote labour and we will be buggered with another Tory government.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/12/2023 08:36

I’m not too worried about that. How many people did they have to interview before they found one that said they can’t vote labour?

There will be some but I think they are hugely outnumbered by the number of people who won’t be voting Tory for a while.

beguilingeyes · 21/12/2023 09:06

I don't know...I still hear a lot of people saying that Labour would be worse (how!?) or 'they're all the same'.

jgw1 · 21/12/2023 11:57

beguilingeyes · 21/12/2023 09:06

I don't know...I still hear a lot of people saying that Labour would be worse (how!?) or 'they're all the same'.

Surely that's just a lazy way of saying that I know my place, I like to doff my cap to my superiors and feel grateful when sometimes a few crumbs accidentally fall off their overladen table and come my way?

Roussette · 21/12/2023 12:19

Oh heck yes. My Tory through and through friend always spins the line 'they're all the same'. It gets on my nerves. I always answer the same... 'if they were all the same, why is there more than one political party? They are quite obviiously not'

It's such a lazy argument.

More about Mordaunt's Whatsapps:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-67780595

That confirms that, unless Johnson & Gove deleted their WhatsApps within 48 hours of sending (whereupon each deletion would itself be trigger a note to Mordaunt's phone), their WhatsApps could only have been deleted on Mordaunt's phone.

I can only conclude that, either
a) Mordaunt has made some SNAFU with her phone that has affected Johnson & Gove's messages (but presumably not messages from everyone at that period or she wouldn't have raised it as an issue), or
b) someone has had access to her personal phone.

Coincidentally, after Penny was Mightier Than The Sword at the coronation, I do remember her saying "When I was reunited with my phone..."
