This exchange on releasing older symptomatic people from hospitals into care homes does not make (then Chief Medical Officer, now Chief Exec of UK HSA) Professor Jenny Harries look good.

Especially the bit that families won't like it, but they'll get used to it

The same families who were then banned from visiting in case they brought Covid in.

Talking about masks now, homemade 1 and 2 layer ones were basically useless and gave people a false sense of securtity

But government was releasing instructions how to make them anyway

Just to add, these were masks worn by care workers

Edited

Vindicated!!! I was on the Covid board in 2020 fighting against the tide who was telling us to make masks out of old socks. I cant believe people fell for this shit!!!

Another damning Vallance extract shown at the #covidinquiryUK

- Boris Johnson allegedly said in July '21 we'll need to learn to die with covid
- PM wanted 'all the malingering work shy people' to be back at work. ie full opening up
- Health Sec Sajid Javid v cautious

Its nice to see that Boris thought that he and his other work shy ministers should do some work for a change rather than malingering at illegal parties.

JenniferBooth · 29/11/2023 13:58

Some people DID go back to work. e,g they opened up their gyms and hairdressers and got fined for it. You gonna reimburse their fines Boris? Calling people malingering when THEY were the ones who forced them not to work
Fucking gaslighting cunt.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 14:24

Javid being asked why was there no public health campaign/strategy to raise awareness about long covid.

Javid doesn’t remember one.

JenniferBooth · 29/11/2023 14:25

I really hope the vaccine mandate for care workers is brought up

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 14:29

Asked about a key senior meeting about Omnicron, Javid says he can't anwer thw question as he wasn't there.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 14:36

Javid: “Johnson decided to shut the Centre for Pandemic Preparedness [omnicrom wave] but not tell anyone and just see if the public noticed”

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 14:38

Fucking hell.

Sorry, that's probably not a very helpful comment ^^

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 14:43

Javid on what lessons he learnt, 'more available health capacity'

Remind us again which government reduced that capacity Hmm

JenniferBooth · 29/11/2023 14:45

And how can that capacity be increased when 40,000 care workers quit due to his stupid insane vaccine mandate

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2023 14:52

Dominic Raab up next

Have to catch up later

minou123 · 29/11/2023 15:02

Thank you everyone for keeping us updated.
I'm having a bugger of a week, so can't watch it live. So your updates are keeping me in the loop.

I'm raging for tomorrow, it's Hancock and I have meetings all day, so won't be able to watch it live.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 15:21

I've been watching Raab. He's performing 'Mr Reasonable and Credible' so far.

Favourite words are 'hindsight' and 'evidence'.

He takes issue with the KC calling it 'management speak'. 'It's science', shoots back Raab.

MidnightOnceMore · 29/11/2023 15:22

He's very tetchy!

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 15:31

MidnightOnceMore · 29/11/2023 15:22

He's very tetchy!

He is now! The Polite Assassin #2 KC really got to him with that 'management speak' barb. Raab sees himself as an action man, not a grey man or a wanky man.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 15:44

Raab's background prior to politics is a brief career in international law (as a qualified solicitor), and this encounter with the KC is testing his ego and pride, I would say. He wants to establish his intellect. He's fascinating (not necessarily in a good way, I hasten to add).

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:05

Raab now talking about a 'four point matrix' and 'not enough challenges to groupthink'. Maaate ...

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:25

On Devolved Administrations (DAs) - Raab's evidence contradicts that given by the First Ministers and others that they couldn't get a look in at COBR. Raab says joint working was all fine.

Raab talks about the DAs all being able to 'feed in'. [But not being invited. The Metro Mayors made this point as well about not being invited or properly involved.]

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:41

Raab uncomfortable talking about how he recognised and how he knew that poor children, esp 'ethic minority' children, would be disproportionately affected.

The FEMHO KC Mr Dayle trying to get him to reconcile his statements in evidence.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:42

Southall Black Sisters allowed a question on Equality Impact Assessments.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:47

Raab remembers little about the detail. He is dismissive [in my view] of EIAs. Pretty much saying it doesn't really matter if one wasn't done at end of April re isolation, because one might not have picked up the issues within families anyway [??]

Interesting back and forth about DV and class correlation.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:50

Jesus. Women and kids at risk of DV described by Raab as 'a caveat' that couldn't be fitted into a press conference. Would have made it 'unwieldy'. Other comms existed, he says. At press conference, we needed to take questions from the press.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:54

Scottish Covid Bereaved KC hitting him hard on his 'irritation' with the Devolved Administrations without having the evidence that would justify his irritation.

It takes a strong and confident leader to allow others to be involved. Johnson was not that person.
