Toddler used as bait in possible abduction of woman

(US based) On Thursday a woman, Carlee Russell, saw a toddler walking on the interstate outside Alabama, she called 911 to report it before stopping to help. Her car was found with the engine still running with her phone in and her smart watch. No missing toddler has been reported in the area.

Absolutely terrifying. It sounds to me most likely to be human trafficking? Poor, poor woman. Stopping to help a child in danger Sad it makes you think doesn't it, I don't think I'd want to stop and help if I ever came across that situation now.

I don't know how to do clicky links, sorry, but just Google Carlee Russell and you'll find plenty of news articles.

Or how about she got in a row with the parents of the child who were nearby? Or a million other things could have happened!

Speculating something so specific is wrong at this stage.

It is pretty obvious what the most likely scenario is here.

caggie2 · 15/07/2023 11:24

Her mother has done an appeal for information and has herself said that they believe the child was used as bait to lure Carlee out of her car. It does look likely to be the case..

This sounds like one of those ‘omg make sure you check in the back of your car because a woman found an axe murderer in hers! Share everywhere!,!!!!’

Jongleterre · 15/07/2023 11:25

@doingitalllagain I think she came to harm as a scream was heard down the phone and her wig she was wearing was found along with her phone and an eye witness saw a man by the side of the car.

But it's wrong to speculate that a child was specifically used as bait. That we do not know at this stage.

Exactly this. Ridiculous scaremongering based on speculation.

Blimey @Pringleface who shat in your cornflakes this morning? Give the OP a break!

It pisses me off to see someone asserting as fact something which is pure speculation, especially using a subject like that on a parenting website. And when they don’t even bother to link to the story, it’s even more dumb.

ScrambledSmegs · 15/07/2023 11:37

The woman, 25-year-old Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell, called 911 around 9:34 p.m. local time on Thursday, according to a Facebook post from the Hoover Police Department.

Russell told the dispatcher that she saw a toddler walking on the side of I-459 South. After calling 911, she stopped to check on the child and called a family member who lost contact with her, though the line remained open, according to the Facebook post.

This seems to be why it is suspected she was abducted - her family member heard whatever incident led to her going missing.

@Pringleface the OP wrote 'possible' abduction right there in the title! 🙄

The family member heard her ask the child if she was ok, then heard her scream and she hasn't been since. Abduction is the most likely scenario so not sure why you're getting so pissy.

Pringleface · 15/07/2023 11:46

The subject says ‘Toddler used as bait’.

Is that definitely the case then? Or would you say that’s speculation?

PowerBMI · 15/07/2023 11:48

Op why do you think it’s most likely to be human trafficking? Even if the toddler was used as bait?

TRexTara · 15/07/2023 11:58

God how awful. I would definitely stop and get involved if I saw a toddler wandering about. I hope that poor woman is ok.

Losttheplotsometimeago · 15/07/2023 11:59

Amazed they have bothered reporting on or investigating a black woman going missing.

This is a horrible story... I hope there is a happy ending. Her poor mother.

riotlady · 15/07/2023 13:44

I would be very surprised if it’s related to
human trafficking tbh. It’s “easy” enough to traffic people who for whatever unfortunate reason won’t be missed, there’s no reason for convoluted plots to snatch people off the street. Trafficking cases generally don’t look like ‘Taken’

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 15/07/2023 16:19

Yes I'm following this story elsewhere op

A new low, using a child in this way.

What other motive would there be? Genuinely can't think of one. If you're abducting for hostage money you'd likely select a victim, not randomly abduct whoever stopped on the interstate

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 15/07/2023 17:03

If the 'toddler' was used as bait....how could said toddler be trusted not to run into the road and get killed?

Also, if it's a trafficking case, how could it be endured an attractive female would stop?

Oldtiredfedup · 15/07/2023 17:08

Incredibly odd that a woman who has seen a toddler along the interstate, who has called 911 to report, who was obviously deeply concerned for the child, stopped to remove her smart watch, her wig, and left her phone as well in the car before exiting to go to the toddler.

somethings very wrong - and those saying a toddler being used as bait is a ridiculous assertion, you don’t need to look very face to find stories of children being used in all sorts of ways to cause harm or serve nefarious purposes.

What other motive?? Really?? You've never heard of someone just disappearing & being found murdered.

Unfortunately it's far more likely she's been victim of a random abduction.

PriamFarrl · 15/07/2023 17:16

So they had no idea who would stop to help this child. Chances are it would be a woman but nothing more than that. It could have been anyone. If I was wanting to abduct people for human trafficking I wouldn’t do it this way. I’d be more likely to get women who are substance abusers or similar, women who are less likely to have family who will follow it up.

Yes it’s horrendous, and I do think this poor woman has been abducted, but I think human trafficking is a leap.
