Toddler used as bait in possible abduction of woman

(US based) On Thursday a woman, Carlee Russell, saw a toddler walking on the interstate outside Alabama, she called 911 to report it before stopping to help. Her car was found with the engine still running with her phone in and her smart watch. No missing toddler has been reported in the area.

Absolutely terrifying. It sounds to me most likely to be human trafficking? Poor, poor woman. Stopping to help a child in danger Sad it makes you think doesn't it, I don't think I'd want to stop and help if I ever came across that situation now.

The boundaries between invention and MH crisis are quite blurry though, aren't they?

I don’t understand your point.

As I said, I don’t think she is entirely well. Because mentally well, stable people don’t do this sort of thing.

But there’s a huge difference between having poor mental health, planning and executing that plan. And having poor mental health and genuinely believing that’s what’s happening or happened.

She didn’t believe she saw a toddler at the side of the road. She made that up. She didn’t believe she was being kidnapped when she screamed and disappeared when she was getting her snacks and robe she stole from work, so her relative could here her.

Theres a massive difference between poor mental health that leads you to do something bad, knowing it wrong but doing it anyway because you mental health is impacting your choices. And poor mental health that’s making you think something is happening when it’s not.

I suspect she is in the first category. Not the second.

I agree. She could have been having a severe mental health crisis which made her believe this was happening. But I think this was a case of her mental health being poor and this being a way to gain attention.

It also shows how quickly conclusions can be drawn about the way news stories can be grabbed and turned into ‘Toddlers being used as bait in human trafficking’.

One black woman having a MH crisis, or even one black woman spinning a lie, shouldn't reflect in any way on all the black women who are victims of crime. Any more than the Papini case reflected badly on white women who are victims of crime.

It's awful that we have to think that way about media representations of our particular minorities.

What are you talking about? It’s not awful that I’m thinking any sort of way and where did I say it reflected badly on other victims?

It’s disappointing that she lied when so many black women go missing in the US. All the time and resources that was used in trying to find her could have been used elsewhere where it was really needed.

Did I say that future victims will now be doubted or anything along those lines? She simply wasted time when it was needed elsewhere. That’s all

Not only did she waste the time of valuable police etc she also cost them a large amount of money as was raised at the press conference

I hope it doesn't lead to poor responses to missing black woman but that is obviously a legitimate concern as it was raised right from the start when frankly it was obvious her story was nonsense

Historically, it's the way the media cover BAME victims that's as much of problem as law enforcement. Hopefully the media are finally getting a bit more sophisticated.

She’s been charged

Plenty of people do versions of this in real life, imagine scenarios where they are both a hero and a victim. She took it a bit too far, but although I don't know if there's a name for this you see it all the time. On a bigger scale too, that ''Scamanda'' was a church leader in a parish the size of 3,000 giving inspirational talks about Jesus while she was battling cancer. She triumphed, she relapsed, she triumphed, she relapsed.

There has to be a name for this. It's like inhabiting all roles in the drama triangle yourself.

Should the title of the thread be changed now OP? @caggie2

You can’t do that. Only MNHQ can do.

It really should have been changed from the start along with the OTT op, human trafikking scaremongering

pickledandpuzzled · 29/07/2023 14:33

Yes, @PriamFarrl

I suppose I was suggesting she should ask. It's more polite than going over her head.

It was also odd from the start that OP thought "ransom" and "people trafficking" were the only two possible motivations for (potentially) abducting women. When we all surely know that rape and then murder to conceal the rape is the usual motivation for this type of crime.

Lots of odd things about this thread.
