Mad cow disease - yes! We were very suspicious of the bovine spongiform bolognese at school...

I agree we were much more exposed to news before streaming services and SM when everyone had to watch the one TV in the house, no matter if it gave us nightmares or not!

Susan Maxwell and Caroline Hogg being abducted. Both very close to home for different reasons. It definitely marked an end of innocence for me and had a deep effect. I still think of them. They were both killed by Robert Black but I don’t think their names are well known.

This. I was 8 when Caroline Hogg went missing and I vividly remember seeing it on the news and my parents talking about it.

Concorde maiden flight .Watched it from seven bridge service station .

Another one for me would be prison riots where prisoners were seen on top of the roofs and prison officers were held hostage.

The late-70s concern re the ozone layer and CFCs. I remember watching Nationwide and the presenter explaining how we were all going to get skin cancer and the fish would die.

Flixborough disaster

stephanie slater kidnapping and the capture of Michael sams. She was found close to where I grew up and I remember being shocked. Previously I’d thought stuff like that happened far away

It has to happen somewhere!

On that TV show Murder In My Village, they always have some random villager who says "things like that don't happen here."

It's nonsense. Things like that happen anywhere. Even in my tiny, remote Scottish village, there have been two murders in the last thirty years.

I think most adults are pretty ignorant on the full story with Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Surely young people tosay know about the moon landing and the fall of the Berlin Wall! Confused

They might never have heard about Jill Dando being killed or the Kursk submarine disaster or the disappearance of Suzy Lampllugh - all big news stories at the time.

Why would they though? If it's taught in history class then yes. But these aren't things that come up in general conversations, and they haven't been given much attention on TV in a while. Some people will only be finding out about the Titanic now due to very recent tragic events.

HilaryThorpe · 22/06/2023 19:06

The Suez crisis. Lots of solemn voices on the wireless and petrol rationing for six months.

FluffyCat17 · 22/06/2023 19:08

John Lennon being shot.

Acid rain.

That not everyone could go to a nuclear shelter and people would be told who to leave behind.
