Dolly the clone sheep is one of my earliest news memories when I was a child. And I remember seeing the patio shots on the news with the Fred West thing and not understanding what was happening.

I am so old! I actually covered this story as a journalist!

faffadoodledo · 22/06/2023 21:54

Dolly the sheep, not Fred west

Vettrianofan · 22/06/2023 21:56

Lots previously mentioned.

The Mary Rose - that was my first conscious memory of the news.
The murder of Carl Bridgewater
The broadcast ban - Gerry Adams being voiced by an actor. Odd the same didn't apply to Ian Paisley. Hmm
Mandela being freed
The USSR coup, with Boris Yeltsin standing on a tank
Thatcher being stabbed in the back and resigning

Oh my gosh, thank you for mentioning the Broadcast Ban. I vividly remember this on the news. I asked my Mum about it a couple of years ago. She denied all knowledge of it and looked at me like I was crazy. I'd previously tried to look it up but obviously didn't use the correct search terms.

I've just Googled what year Louise Brown was born (first test tube baby) and was surprised to find she's not much younger than me - I remember her being on TV and it being a big thing.

I don't think my DC would know about the Louise Woodward trial for what it's worth I think she's innocent

LynetteScavo · 22/06/2023 23:24

Oh, the Hungerfird massacre!

And more recently the Soham murders. Probably one reason parents are less trusting of anyone than they used to be in times gone by.

It seems odd to me that the relaxing of the Sunday trading laws and the beginning of the National Lottery only happened about 30 years ago - funny to think that they were just not 'a thing' before that. I remember how controversial they were before they came in; although there were some surprising inconsistencies with the former, whereby you could buy a porn mag on a Sunday, but you couldn't buy a Bible.

Mind, the World Wide Web is younger than that and I can barely remember what life was like without it - even though I spent almost half of my life (to date) blissfully not online. And tell somebody under 20 now that cheque books used to have the '19' for the year helpfully pre-printed on each one and they'll say.... "What on earth is a cheque book?!" Grin

Horse meat scandal

heartofglass23 · 23/06/2023 00:32

The Orkney child abuse scandal and subsequent Clyde report.

The fuel increase blockades in 2001? Where only emergency vehicles could get petrol.

The Icelandic volcano that stopped all flights over Europe- 2011?

The actor from Allo Allo almost dying in the big storm the weatherman said wouldnt happen.

Clapham rail disaster.

River Phoenix dying of a drug overdose outside Johnny Depps club the viper room. Put me off drugs anyway.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley getting married.

That brookside kiss.

I was only two in 1972 but my parents took me to a drive-in movie in 1976 to see a Mexican dramatization of the Uruguayan Flight 571. It was the flight carrying a Uruguayan rugby team and their friends to Chile but crashed in the Andes. They had to resort to cannibalism to survive and two young passengers trekked the Andes until they reached a farmer and later helped to rescue their fellow passengers. It is a story that has stuck with me since age six.

The Ethan Hawke 1993 film Alive is about this. It's an excellent film.

Wasn't that in 2000 - or did it extend into the next year too? I still think the sign on the front of the lorry that made all the papers was a work of genius: "Tell Gordon Brown 2p off!" Grin

Came on to say this. I was the same age. He felt like a breath of fresh air and was highly respected by all political parties.

I often wonder what the country/world would be like if he had been PM.

Me too. He was so principled and had such integrity and such a clear way of making his point.

I actually remember exactly when the Internet first started and first Nokia mobile phones came out

XelaM · 23/06/2023 10:21

The Belsan school hostage situation. Absolutely tragic.

The Beslan school horror I will never forget. I'm Russian and Putin will burn in hell for this (and his many other crimes of course). Also for the Kursk submarine disaster. 😞

2000 I think. Some professions could get petrol - teachers, for example.

Kegworth M1 plane crash.

As it happened a month after Lockerbie, most people - a lot of my contemporaries - haven't heard of it.
We were watching the news & my mother looked horrified as her partner was on the flight.
She'd taken him to Heathrow & he was on a later flight but as they arrived early, he got that flight.
She drove up there that night & after a couple of days had to identify his body.

Omg!! This is so awful

XelaM · 23/06/2023 14:39

On the back of this thread I watched the channel 5 documentary about the abduction of Lesley Whittle. How awful that they could have got her back if not for the misunderstanding about the ransom drop instructions! Her brother must have been beside himself with the guilt over that!

Yeah I think it was 2000 as I remember being pregnant. I had a car which ran on leaded fuel not unleaded so could normally get fuel.
