I have been avoiding the news as it gets a bit overwhelming. Ive looked at it today and seen the tragic deaths of 2 young people unrelated. There doesn't seem to be more information.
Can't imagine what happened. Their poor families.

RIP both of them.

There was a group of people in the sea when a boat sailed past causing huge waves. Two of the people a 17 year old and 12 year old got into difficulty resulting in their deaths. Obviously it is still being investigated.

Eh? Where did you get that information from? As far as I can tell the police have not said what happened yet.

itsgettingweird · 04/06/2023 19:14

2 people drowned on Wednesday. Circumstances are unknown with regards cause of death. There are reports rip tides were spotted at 4pm (just before they got into difficultly) and were announced to beach goers.

Police are investigating and initially arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter.

On Thursday there was a mass brawl of about 50 teens with weapons that was dispersed. 1 person minor injuries and 1 arrested.

There is already a long thread about this.

Where is it

I think previous thread was deleted.
I don't think the comms have been handled brilliantly by the police. Whatever you think morally, it's totally unrealistic to ask people "not to speculate" in the age of social media, it has been for several years now. Even the local MP asked the police to give more info earlier this week.

The thread is still there.

RampantIvy · 04/06/2023 20:12

All I have heard was that there was an incident, but no details have been given.
My condolences to the families of those who died Flowers

CeliaNorth · 04/06/2023 20:15

What do you expect them to say? If they're still investigating, 'We are still investigating' is the only thing to say.

Have people forgotten Nicola Bulley, and what speculation led to in that case?

BarelyLiterate · 04/06/2023 20:23

The police have evidently learned nothing from the death of Nicola Bulley. Media statements which withhold information or provide incomplete information about the circumstances of a tragic death simply invite & fuel speculation on social media. In this case, the fact that the police refused to disclose why the man was arrested or what he was suspected of doing was always going to set hares running.

Absolutely this

This is my understanding also. The boat caused a wake which overwhelmed the kids. I'm not sure how it is manslaughter unless the boat was in an area where boats are not permitted so I'm thinking it's that. Very sad.

or the boat was going faster than the speed limit in the relevant area?

Are you speculating or do you know this?

pickledandpuzzled · 04/06/2023 20:59

The boat was on its regular route.

We need to wait. It's unfair to everyone to speculate.

Sometimeswinning · 04/06/2023 20:56

Not speculating. It was a comment about an additional situation which could lead to liability (in addition to the boat being where it shouldn’t have been which @stingypeasant mentioned). In my locality the speed limits for boats are very slow and often exceeded.

You know how these things go though! One little comment. This whole thread is a bit dodgy. "I don't watch the news but..." People were filming this as children died.

pickledandpuzzled · 04/06/2023 21:17

Thing is people have been coming up with their own explanations which have been repeated as inside knowledge.

Hence the tombstoning. And jet ski comments initially.

Whatever you have heard is speculation, until the police release more information.

Round123 · 04/06/2023 21:18

I was on Bournemouth beach today. Never seen the rnli lifeguards so active in my 15 years of living here! They were pacing up and down the beach (as they should be), my husband and I noticed they were particularly keen to hoik out kids/people on inflatables too far out (which is something I’ve only ever notice her picked up on in Cornwall).

we also wondered if the kids who died were jumping off the pier. Vvv sad either way.

Round123 · 04/06/2023 21:18

It is very odd that the police haven’t said anything

RedVanYellowVan · 04/06/2023 21:24

Two children died. Does anyone unconnected need to know more for any particular reason?

Kassalah · 04/06/2023 21:25

They weren't jumping off the pier @Round123. The police confirmed this a few days ago. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-65776291 I do wish they'd release more info though, otherwise people WILL speculate!

Bournemouth beach death swimmers not hit by boat or jet ski

Police in Bournemouth release more details about the "devastating" deaths of a boy and girl.

TattiePants · 04/06/2023 21:26

The police have made it very clear that the two people killed were not jumping from the pier or were hit by a jet ski or boat (contrary to rumours). A local pleasure boat has been impounded as part of the investigation so I’m sure the police will release more information as the investigation progresses.

SaulGood · 04/06/2023 21:29

The police simply can't release more info as it's part of an investigation. The nature of what happened will come to light when they've investigated. The investigating team are doing everything they should be right now and the media and public speculation is crass.

You may argue that the police have learned nothing but I think the public have learned nothing.

@RedVanYellowVan well if you take that attitude we can just stop with all news reports can't we.
