I have been avoiding the news as it gets a bit overwhelming. Ive looked at it today and seen the tragic deaths of 2 young people unrelated. There doesn't seem to be more information.
Can't imagine what happened. Their poor families.

RIP both of them.

Human nature is inquisitive but there are victims and families out there who deserve the opportunity for their loved ones' fates to be investigated free of prejudice. DH has been followed round the supermarket by press looking for info. Never more so than when something terrible has happened.

It'll be reported when appropriate.

The police simply can't release more info as it's part of an investigation. The nature of what happened will come to light when they've investigated. The investigating team are doing everything they should be right now and the media and public speculation is crass.

You may argue that the police have learned nothing but I think the public have learned nothing.

Totally this.

I think people have unrealistic expectations of the speed of release of information, and tend to forget that investigations take time.

But we do need to know what happened - that's properly a matter of public interest, Because if there are steps that can be taken to prevent the circumstances that led to the fatalities ever arising again, then we need to be assured that those steps are being taken.

That's what coroners' inquests are for.

Why do random Jo Public people feel they have a right to know before the police are confident of the facts? Releasing all the witness statements and physical evidence into the public domain, as they emerge, and as they change, is the only way to achieve "transparency" and yet that evolving release would fuel extremely wild speculation.

Don't flipping speculate on very fragmentary information. This is the lesson to learn.

I don't think the comms have been handled brilliantly by the police.

What do you expect them to say? If they're still investigating, 'We are still investigating' is the only thing to say.

Have people forgotten Nicola Bulley, and what speculation led to in that case?

That was due to lack of info from the police too!

This is it really, in a nutshell. The police can't always make information public, and for good reason.

They said they believed she was in the river. She was in the river. What more was there to say?

Yfhcchchvhch · 05/06/2023 02:09

Yes. It's called "news".

Oblomov23 · 05/06/2023 05:34

We were nearby at the time, now back at home. No information has been given, no updates.

The only things confirmed are that the children were not jumping from the pier, neither were they struck by a boat or jet ski or any other sea faring vehicle. They were not related, several other children got into difficulty.

It can only be speculation that the boat was causing larger waves or leaving children in its wake, or that there was a rip tide, or a combination of both, or neither (which seems unlikely).

A terrible tragedy.

I came on because I'm as interested as anyone else in understanding what happened, but quite shocked at some pp who seem frustrated and annoyed that the police investigation is still ongoing and there is no new information yet. The police shouldn't be wasting time appeasing armchair detectives on sm or justifying their investigation. In time, we'll learn more and have no choice but to be patient until then.
