New Zealand is in a National State of emergency and it feels like the world doesn't care

I live in the UK but originate from NZ. They have just been hit by an incredibly destructive cyclone. Thousands are homeless. 5 people have died but there will be more. I appreciate this is not on the scale of the Earthquake in Turkey/Syria. I guess I'm wondering where the international support for NZ is? I've heard nothing and it's not even hitting the news in the UK (or just minor mention buried somewhere)?

Well said Justkeepswimming.

My family in Hawkes Bay are all safe, and for that, I am very very grateful.

@magicthree I live in Hawke's Bay and it is worse than I ever thought it would be. It almost feels like a film set has been created for a disaster movie - it does not feel real, even though you know it is real.

I am just so grateful that we have our home and all our friends are safe.

Thinking of you and all the others who have been affected, it really looks horrific up there.

It’s a huge tragedy, but if I can be reassuring in the Aussie floods through 2022 and the 2020 fires there were terrifying numbers missing for ages but gradually nearly all of them turned up. Comms cut off, the info not being passed on is standard with events of this magnitude, it takes a long time to get a complete list of people and in contact with them.

Mamiamamia · 20/02/2023 09:09

I just read it was almost 6.5k still missing:

That is terrible it sounds like something out of Mad Max from one of the most civilised and rich countries on the planet.

Things are really bad here but that article bears no resemblance to what I see in Hawke's Bay. We have sadly had 11 people who have been confirmed dead and there are 13 more who cannot be contacted, numerous properties are completely damaged, crops and orchards destroyed but it is not anything like Mad Max.

We have had a small amount of looting and the gang issue has been a problem in NZ for years but most of us are going around helping where we can, raising and giving money to charities which are supporting the victims.

As a community we have some really horrible people who will take advantage of any situation - like any other community. The article is in no way representative of what is happening here.

I have donated and wish to do more.
The governments past and present should be doing more to get rid of all gangs.
Why should good people put up with the bad in New Zealand.
