Idaho college murders - suspect arrested

I’ve searched for a thread and can’t find one.

but I see a phd student at a nearby college has been arrested. Interestingly it looks like he left dna at the scene and they ran it through 23andme and got a family match and then worked out that persons relatives and that’s how they knew it was him. Though he’s going to plead not guilty.

if it was him just seems like it was a random psycho. Though there’s some talk he followed one of the girls on social media.

The minute i saw his mugshot I said "Ted Bundy!"

Same looks, same region of the US, same type of spree killing. I wonder if he studied Bundy and was emulating...

CoffeeBoy · 31/12/2022 22:39

Yes, definitely Ted Bundy vibes. He fits that profile of someone who considers themselves intelligent and able to get away with it.

maybe he didn’t think he’d have left dna. Maybe he didn’t consider the ancestry websites. But that’s how the Night Stalker got caught 40 years on.

Criminology student. Theory seems to be that only one of the girls was the target and he’s been stalking her

CoffeeBoy · 31/12/2022 22:42

Does make you wonder if he was drawn to criminology because of some sort of fascination with serial killers, murders.

Forensic science and modern policing is so sophisticated nowadays perpetrators just won't get away with things like they used to.

Someo · 04/01/2023 21:39

I've been following this case for a few weeks as it seemed to random and horrific.

Apparently he's been put at the crime scene using genealogy database matches.

I'm glad those poor students families finally have someone as a person of interest. Will be interesting to see what else the police have on him.

KangarooKenny · 04/01/2023 21:42

I can’t work out if he did it because one of the girls wouldn’t go out with him, or if he tried to do the perfect murder and get away with it.

IDontCareMatthew · 04/01/2023 22:12

I just don't know how he could keep them all contained and quiet....I always thought there had to be 2 killers

Glad they have made an arrest!

Surreality22 · 04/01/2023 22:22

If they were killed in their sleep, under blankets in bed they would have been taken by surprise and possibly unable to make any noise depending on where they were stabbed, eg throat.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/01/2023 22:26

Personally, I don't think this was random at all. I think he had been stalking one of the girls. I think they knew each other/had come into contact, and she in some way, in his mind, rejected him.

Those poor kids. I know they weren't kids but they were younger than my own children, so they are all "kids" to me. All of them just starting their lives. This is just an absolutely horric case. It's unimaginable.

At least two had defensive wounds and were out of bed, so some sort of struggle. Plus there was a dog, amazed the dog didn’t bark!

he is literally on a plane now heading back to Idaho. Most tracked flight on flightradar.

More information on the court documents. Makes for chilling reading. 😞

Really struck a cord with me, they all look so young and full of life and fun.

IDontCareMatthew · 05/01/2023 20:04

Ugh the affidavit has been released

One of the other girls who survived watched him walk out of the house!

That bit confuses me. If a random stranger like that walked out my house, I'd at least go to check on my roommates once gone, or call police. Not go to sleep.

CoffeeBoy · 05/01/2023 20:44

It is bizarre. She heard another roommate (one of the ones who was killed) saying to someone else that she thought someone was in the house. She opened the door and looked/listened. Then went back in her room. Then heard someone crying, looked out again and saw a man in a mask walk past her and out the house. She went back in her room and didn’t come out for hours and when she did still didn’t call the police but rang a friend.

think she must have been in total shock.

but what is also weird is that sounds like he walked right past her. Did he not see her? Did he see her and let her live?

he left a knife sheath with his dna at the scene. His phone was switched off for the two hour time slot. But his phone records show at other times he was in the street. I don’t know how he can plead not guilty.

Maybe she was in complete shock and terrified. That's all I can think of.

I think Idaho police have done a great job of piecing it all together.

It sounds as if he was trying to be clever and commit the perfect crime but leaving the knife sheath behind sounds odd.

IDontCareMatthew · 05/01/2023 21:04

It's as if he wanted to be caught

Watched his court appearance on fax news, he didn't seem rattled or fearful about being in custody

He's very matter of fact and engaged with the whole process

CoffeeBoy · 05/01/2023 21:19

If I was going to commit a murder I wouldn’t turn my phone off for the duration, I’d leave it at home.

Following the story too - absolutely heartbreaking and chilling - Brian Entin on twitter doing great updates if you are still following the story - there's another court appearance today

foxlover47 · 12/01/2023 18:30

@Starrburst there is another thread on here regarding this at the moment
